The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martiae, Late Latin: Idus Martii)[1] is a day on theRoman calendar that corresponds to 15 March. It was marked by severalreligious observances and became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. The death of Caesar made the Ides of March a turning point in Roman history, as one of the events that marked the transition from thehistorical period known as the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire.[2]
Although March (Martius) was the third month of the Julian calendar, in the oldest Roman calendar it was the first month of the year. The holidays observed by the Romans from the first through the Ides often reflect their origin as new year celebrations.

Syracuse Basketball Looking to Jump Start Season in NCAA Tournament (the juice; Bierman)
Why should we be surprised that it in this day and age of practically a daily technology achievement, along with less and less privacy in our professional and personal lives because of much of that technology, that it finally happened?
Someone figured out a way to let all of us college basketball and NCAA Tournament zealots peer into the world of the broadcast partner’s inside information direct from the selection committee by posting a leaked bracket on Twitter.
There it was for all to see and share Sunday evening during the initial stage of the telecast unveiling, which not only went viral within minutes but simultaneously saved all of us from the agony of watching in detail CBS’s ill fated programming decision.

By doubling the length of the “Selection Sunday” show, which wasn’t broken and didn’t seed fixing, except, that is, to jam more of the NCAA’s “Corporate Champions” sponsors ads and idiotic banter into the yawning mix, the resulting social media upheaval blew right back into CBS’s (and the NCAA’s) face.

Clemson's Struggle Shows Where Real ACC Power Lies (newsobserver.com; Jacobs)
Brad Brownell knew Clemson’s NCAA prospects were in jeopardy in mid-January, even as his team conjured one of the most impressive winning streaks in school history. The Tigers eventually racked up victories in five consecutive games, the last three against Top 20 ACC opponents Louisville, Duke and Miami. Never before had Clemson defeated three ranked teams in a row; only Duke enjoyed a similar run this season.
As it turned out, the coach’s fears proved well-founded. Despite finishing 10-8 in the ACC for the second time in three seasons, and enjoying that remarkable January burst, the Tigers faded from bracketologists’ ravings about soft bubbles and hard bubbles, of last four in and first four out, as the season wound down.
Clemson (17-14 overall) and its winning conference record were shrugged aside even as league adherents insisted the ACC deserves better NCAA tournament representation than the six members invited in each of the past two seasons and the seven this year. Unfortunately, that sense of entitlement isn’t borne out by achievement once ACC teams get to the NCAA tournament, a fact we’ll revisit shortly.

SU Basketball Fans Happy with NCAA Tournament Bids (twcnews.com; Lucivero)
The madness is here at SU. As the men's basketball team secured a 10 seed in the NCAA tournament, fans are hopeful they'll make the most of it.
"Because you can tell by the way they go on that court, they're looking for the same thing, they're both driving for the same goal,” said Maurice Ross, an SU basketball fan.
But it's not without some controversy. Many critics say other, more deserving teams were left out. Of course, SU fans have something to say about that.
"I don't know anybody that could even say that,” said Bill Nester, who manages Manny’s, an SU clothing store on Marshall Street. "The quality of teams that we've played, the closeness of the games ... I mean sure, we lost to Pittsburgh, but it was only by one point."
So while fans are just excited to see the men's season extended, the women's team is set up to make some history, bringing the NCAA tournament to the Carrier Dome for the first time ever.
"It's really exciting,” said Alexis Peterson, a guard for the women’s team. "This is something that's never been done. We've been in the NCAA tournament the last couple of years, and to be able to have the opportunity to play at home, it's a great opportunity for us."
Although, with four straight NCAA appearances, the women's squad doesn't always get the support it deserves.
"I don't follow them too much, but I heard they're doing good,” Ross said.
Basketball fans are confident they'll rally behind both teams.

Divers Pull Woman From Seneca River Near Syracuse (PS; O'Toole)
Divers and others rescued a woman from the Seneca River near Hayes Road and the Elks Lodge on Cold Springs Road in Lysander shortly after midnight Tuesday.
After the call came in at 12:03 a.m., Onondaga County Air-1 helicopter provided lighting on the river as rescue divers from Liverpool Fire Department went into the water. Area fire departments also launched boats to try to get to the woman.
The divers quickly reached the woman and the Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps rushed her to a Syracuse hospital, said Seneca River Assistant Fire Chief Chris Snow.
The woman was in stable condition, he said.
"It was a tremendous effort between all the agencies," Snow said. "Good communication led to a quick and safe rescue."
Authorities did not say how or why the woman was in the river.
Three marked Onondaga County Sheriff's Office patrol cars blocked Route 370, also known as Cold Springs Road, at John Glenn Boulevard shortly after midnight. Route 370 at Hayes Road also was blocked to traffic
