Welcome to National Mushroom Hunting Day!
- If you are new to mushroom hunting, the first thing you need to know is which mushrooms are safe for consumption. Do your homework or go with an experienced hunter.
- Bring a mushroom field guide along. Always err on the side of caution. If you don’t know what it is, don’t pick it!
- Know your trees in your neck-of-the-woods.
- Dress appropriately and wear sunscreen.
- Bring along plenty of water.
- Bring your charged cell phone and/or compass or GPS.
- Know the rules of the land - don’t trespass!
- Bring along a walking stick.
- If Fido is along for the ride, keep in mind some mushrooms can be harmful to dogs.
- Pack a lot of patience.
- Once you know what to look for and are properly prepared, finding the mushrooms can sometimes be like a treasure hunt or finding a needle in a haystack. But once a prime spot is located, keep it top-secret.
- Keep your eyes open and be careful where you step.
- If you find one, you’ll probably find more in the same area.
- Don’t pull the mushrooms from the ground!
Cuse's Final Four Hopes Take Hit with Richardson's Departure (todaysu.com; Holcomb)
On the same day Syracuse fans heard there will be massive upgrades to their beloved Carrier Dome, upstate New York was also hit with crushing news. Standout basketball star Malachi Richardson will not be returning to school next season.
Initially, Orange fans remained hopeful the guard/forward would return because he entered the NBA combine without signing with an agent. But after rising up mock drafts, Richardson announced Monday he officially hired representation, which automatically means he will forgo his college eligibility.
His draft stock still varies on most mock drafts, but some have him approaching the top half of the first round.
Regardless of how one feels about his early departure, there is no denying that Syracuse will badly miss Richardson next season. And without him, the chances Jim Boeheim and the Orange earn their first back-to-back trip to the Final Four is greatly diminished.

UC Davis Tables Kevin Blue as New AD (sacbee.com; Paterson)
UC Davis announced Monday afternoon it had hired Kevin Blue as its new director of athletics.
Blue, 33, is the senior associate athletics director for external relations at Stanford. He replaces interim athletics director Teresa Gould.
The appointment by acting Chancellor Ralph Hexter ends a months-long search that included a 12-person campus recruitment advisory committee.
Blue’s salary will be $245,000, with incentives of up to $30,000 per year for academic, fundraising and athletic excellence.

Several prominent UCD alumni and Davis Enterprise columnist Bob Dunning lobbied for former Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross. The former UCD football player and USC assistant athletic director oversaw Syracuse’s successful transition from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference while taking nonrevenue sports to new heights during his 10 years at the Orange’s athletic helm.
But Gross stepped down as AD in March 2015 shortly after the NCAA levied heavy penalties against the Syracuse men’s basketball program. The NCAA took away eight scholarships and forced the men’s basketball program to forfeit 101 victories. Gross is now Syracuse’s vice president and special assistant to the chancellor.

Maurice Podoloff Presents NBA Championship Trophy to the Syracuse Nationals at the War Memorial April 11, 1955
Nationals Sold, 'Death Knell' Sounded for Nats Fans May 16th, 1963 (PS; Croyle)
The "death knell" was sounded for Syracuse's NBA franchise, the Nationals, in the May 16, 1963 edition of the Post-Standard.
The night before, the team's stockholders voted to sell the team to an interested party from Philadelphia for $500,000.
Club president Dan Biasone solemnly said, "I feel very badly that this had to come about, that the club is being lost to our loyal fans and everybody who supported us for 17 years."
In the end, "the increase in costs of operation it simply got to be impossible to operate," he said.
Biasone figured the team's expenses would grow to over $490,000 next season, and the team faced a rent increase for use of the War Memorial from the county.
Reaction to the news brought shock from all concerned.
Nats' great Dolph Schayes said he "fell off a stool" when he heard the news. He said, "The Nats to me were more than a team – they were a way of life."
