Welcome to Hug Holiday Day!

Hug Holiday Day encourages us to give hugs to those who need them. On this day, people go out and give hugs at senior citizen centers, hospitals, and other places. The focus is upon elderly, sick and invalid, lonely people and anyone who needs the warmth, cheer, and love that a hug provides.

This very special day was created by the "Hugs for Health Foundation". According to the Foundation:

" Hug Holiday is founded on the premise that hugs, friendship and volunteer support are vital components to the overall senior care plan."

Celebrate Hug Holiday Day today by:

  • Giving hugs to those who need one
  • Joining Hugs for Heath
  • Making a donation to this or another group

Where are former Orange players suiting up during this year's NBA Summer League?

In early July, the 2016 edition of the NBA Summer League will get underway. While you're celebrating the birth of America, the NBA's various hopefuls will be competing for a chance to live their pro basketball dreams.

Several former Syracuse Orange basketball players are expected to participate in this year's summer league, including this year's draftees Malachi Richardson and Michael Gbinije.

Gbinije, who was drafted No. 49 by the Detroit Pistons, will get his summer started this Saturday, when the Pistons take on the Knicks in the Orlando Summer League.

Perry Farrell of the Detroit Free Press reported that Detroit head coach Stan Van Gundy plans to play Gbinije at point guard to see if he can sufficiently handle the position at the NBA level. Van Gundy believes that Gbinije's performance this summer could not only affect his position with the team, but also Detroit's other offseason activities. Here's Van Gundy's quote from the Detroit Free Press:

Syracuse Basketball Coaches Jim Boeheim & Quentin Hillsman Remember Pat Summitt (TNIAAM; Keeley)

The Syracuse men's and women's basketball coaches both admired the Tennessee legend for what she did on and off the court.

Former Tennessee Volunteers women's basketball coach Pat Summitt passed away Tuesday and her accomplishments on and off the court will not be forgotten anytime soon. Both of the Syracuse Orange head basketball coaches certainly won't forget the impact she had on the sport and on them.

Pat Summit was one of the world's great basketball coaches. Condolences to her family and Tennessee basketball.

— Jim Boeheim (@therealboeheim) June 28, 2016

Jim Boeheim hopped On The Block with Brent Axe on Tuesday to share his thoughts.

"It's a tragedy. It's an awful disease. She would have coached for another 15 years," Boeheim said in a phone conversation. "She would have won probably 2,000 games. She's just a unique coach that is as good a coach that ever coached in any sport. Men's, women's, football, basketball. She was just as good as you can possibly be as a coach. And it's a terrible tragedy."

Syracuse's sports analytics major mainstreams Moneyball
(sportal.co.nz; Sportal)

This fall's freshman class can earn a degree in sports analytics by spring of 2020.
Call it the mainstreaming of "Moneyball."

Syracuse University will become the first school to offer sports analytics as a major when it welcomes a freshman class this fall that can earn the first bachelor's degrees in the discipline by the spring of 2020, the New York Post reported Tuesday.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said former A's GM Billy Beane, whose use of analytics to turn his team into a low-cost contender was at the heart of "Moneyball," Michael Lewis' bestselling book that became an Oscar-winning movie. “I smile to myself, especially thinking about the reactions when the book came out.”

Scouting and in-game strategy — particularly in baseball — long had been based on gut instinct and experience within the game's boxed-in groupthink. The A's, and now many other teams, broke out of that model, and the idea of sports analytics is now accepted in most major American sports.

“This clearly will meet a need in the industry,” said Michael Veley, director of Syracuse's sports management department, which will house the sports analytics degree. “And that’s what education is all about.”
