Former Syracuse Basketball Player & 'Quiet Storm' DJ Vaughn Harper Dies at 71 (TNIAMM; Keeley)

Most people will remember Vaughn Harper as the velvety deep voice on their New York City radio dial from 1976 until 2008. The originator of "The Quiet Storm" format, there was no mistaking Harper's voice when he started talking.

Harper passed away on Saturday at the age of 71.

Longtime Syracuse Orange fans might remember Harper from a time long before he was a DJ. They might remember him as an extremely solid member of the same SU basketball team in the late 60's.

Harper played for SU between 1965 and 1968 and was a sophomore when Davie Bing and Jim Boeheim were seniors. He started alongside the two legends and averaged nine points a game. After Bing and Boeheim left he blossomed and became one of the team leaders, averaging 16.3 points and 14.4 rebounds per game as as a junior and 15.8 points and 10.9 rebounds per game as a senior. He finished his Syracuse career with 1,070 points and was drafted by the Detroit Pistons. He didn't make the team and segued into his radio career.

Tyler Ennis, Team Canada denied chance for Rio Olympics by France, Tony Parker (PS; Ditota)

Tony Parker's clutch play in the final minutes of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Manila ended the chances of Canada and Tyler Ennis to play in the Rio Olympics.

France defeated Canada 83-74 to collect the final spot in the Rio Olympic basketball tournament. Only 12 teams play in the Olympic Games.

Ennis converted a driving lefty layup with about three minutes to go to get Canada within three, but Parker and the French took over from there. Parker, the 34-year-old guard who made his NBA reputation with the San Antonio Spurs, scored 26 points in fewer than 28 minutes to lead France.

Ennis, the former Syracuse guard who now plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, scored nine points on 4-of-9 shooting. He had two assists and three turnovers in a little more than 28 minutes. Cory Joseph, of the Toronto Raptors, scored 20 for Canada and Melvin Ejim had 19.

Canada struggled to take care of the basketball (21 turnovers) and struggled to contain France's guards. Parker and Nando de Colo combined for 48 points on 17-of-26 shooting.
