Welcome to National French Fries Day!

Today is National French Fries Day! French fries are the ultimate feel-good food, and there are dozens of different ways to enjoy them. Whether you prefer your fries Cajun-style, sweet potato, crinkle-cut, curly, waffle, or covered in chili and cheese, today is the day to celebrate this American favorite.

Although the exact origin of French fries is unknown, one theory suggests that they date back to 17th century Belgium. The inhabitants of this region often cooked small fried fish to accompany their meals. When weather conditions made it too dangerous to go fishing, they cut up potatoes in long, thin strips (to resemble the fish) and fried them!

Today, French fries are a global phenomenon. Whether it’s “pommes frites” in France, “patatas fritas” in Spain, or “chips” in the UK, French fries are a worldwide favorite. Grab an order of fries today to celebrate National French Fries Day!

C.J. Fair drops 20 for Portland Trail Blazers in NBA Summer League game (PS; Carlson)

C.J. Fair played his best game of the NBA Summer League session on Tuesday, scoring 20 points for Portland in a 92-89 sudden-death double overtime win over Utah.

Former Notre Dame star Pat Connaughton knocked down the game-winner with 1:20 left in the second extra session for Portland, but Fair had plenty to do with getting him there.

Four SU targets named to U18 USA team (cusenation; Sigel)

On Tuesday night, USA Basketball announced its 12-man U18 team for the FIBA Americas Championship in Valdivia, Chile. It will take place on July 13-17.

Mohamed Bamba, Matt Coleman, Hamidou Diallo and Quade Green all made the team. Syracuse has either offered or expressed interest in each of those four class of 2017 prospects.

The rest of the 12-man roster includes: Jarrett Allen, James Banks, Markelle Fultz, Kevin Huerter, Michael Porter Jr., M.J. Walker, P.J. Washington and Trae Young.

Syracuse had recruited Banks, Huerter and Porter Jr. out of the remaining eight members of the team. Banks, a class of 2016 prospect, signed with Texas. Kevin Huerter, also a class of 2016 prospect, signed with Maryland, while Porter Jr. eliminated the Orange when he cut his list of schools to five.

50 years later, a team for the ages is not forgotten (lohud; Haggerty)

David Jackson was never an Olympian. But, boy, could he run.

It’s 50 years now since he, Otis Hill, Carl Reed and Larry James took the Penn Relays high school boys 4x440-yard (mile) relay.

They were in junior high together in White Plains when they first realized they could all “do something special,” Jackson said.

At Penn, when they were all seniors at White Plains High, it was “pouring down rain” and the cinder track, which was in its last year of use, was muddy. Still, the four ran 3 minutes, 17.9 seconds, which was only .04 off the meet record.

They also ran the distance that year at 3:12.7 and the 4x220-yard at 1:25.4. Both were national high school records. Their 4x220 mark (converted to 4x200 in meters) remains, 50 years later, a state record. Their 4x440 time (4x400 in meters) was a state record until Huntington broke it just last month.

“We won everything. We won every relay – the five of us. We never lost,” said Jackson, whose five include Cedric Thomas, who’d sometimes sub for Hill.

They were also an incredible force individually. Jackson was the 100-yard state champ. Reed was the 220-yard state champ. Hill was the 440-yard state champ. James was the 180-yard low hurdles state champ.

Hill, who was popular with everyone, died of a heart attack while playing basketball, the sport his son, also Otis, would play at Syracuse University and later professionally overseas. Hill was the fastest of the group, Jackson said – the guy who “set the standard for all of us” and was the leader.

“This was Otis’ team,” said Jackson, who worked with Hill for a time at Hawthorne-Cedar Knowles School, where Hill taught physical education and Jackson taught English and social studies.

What Is Your Earliest Syracuse Sports Memory? (TNIAAM; Keeley)

The general version of this question was making the rounds last week. We figured we'd make it Syracuse-specific.

Last week there was great question making the rounds on Twitter.

15yo has an interesting question this morning: What's the first major news story you can remember living through as a child?

— Ms. (((Rosenberg))) (@Miz_Rosenberg) July 6, 2016

Then that question got narrowed down to sports. Depending on how old you are, it could have been Carl Lewis winning at the Olympics or when the Red Sox came back from down 3-0 to beat the Yankees.

Now, we make it even more granular and ask you to recount the earliest Syracuse Orange sports memory you have. Could be football. Could be basketball. Could be lacrosse. Could be anything, really.

I didn't really become a Syracuse fan until 1996 but if I think back, I can remember the ending of the 1988 Sugar Bowl. Even as a ten-year-old, it seemed like a weird thing that you were able to tie a game. I didn't particularly have a rooting interest on that day but I always did have a soft spot for Syracuse football throughout the late 80's and early 90's. If it was because of that finish, I don't know.

Great job, cuse.com - with all the craziness going on around us, the world needs more positive energy.
