Welcome to National Night Out!

National Night Out is a community-police awareness-raising event in the United States, held the first Tuesday of August.[1] Texas and Florida have the option to use the alternate date of the first Tuesday in October to avoid hot weather.

History
The event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada.

The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch, and other anti-crime efforts.

The events are typically organized by block watches, non-for-profit organizations, companies, and police departments. These events can be as simple as backyard cookouts to full-blown festivals like the one on the west side of Columbus, Ohio. The Ogden Block Watch in Columbus organizes one of the largest of this type of National Night Out festival which includes live music, food, and entertainment.

Team USA (Carmelo Anthony) dominates Nigeria (Michael Gbinije) in basketball exhibition (PS; Ditota)

Carmelo Anthony dropped 10 points in the first half and the United States Men's National team cruised to a 110-66 win over the Nigerian National team in the final exhibition tune-up before the teams fly to Rio for the Summer Olympics.

Two former Syracuse basketball players participated in that game; Anthony and Michael Gbinije, who will represent Nigeria in Rio.

Anthony, set to participate in his fourth Olympic Games, started for Team USA in Houston's Toyota Center. He led all scorers with 19 points. Anthony finished inside, he dropped mid-range shots. He did not make a 3-pointer. Anthony was 0-for-6 from deep on a night when Team USA managed to make nearly 40 percent of its 3-point shots. He was 7-of-16 overall and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

Syracuse Basketball: Jim Boeheim is Not, in Fact, Pregnant (TNIAAM; Keeley)

Well that's one concern off the list.

Jim Boeheim is about to embark on a journey to Rio where he hopes to help lead Team USA to a third gold medal in the Summer Olympics as part of Coach K's staff. As he's done in year's past, he's also relaying details about his experience and journey to Syracuse.com.

This is always one of the most exciting parts of the Olympic process for Syracuse Orange fans because we get to hear Boeheim talk about how food outside of America is so weird and how he's constantly impressed by the fact that his hotel is really nice. It's like reading a travel blog from your rural uncle who refers to Syracuse, NY as "The City."

It's mostly a lot of talk about what it's like to go for a third time and how good the team and players are, but let's get to the good stuff.

Melo is excited. I'm excited. Everybody's excited. The whole family is coming again and they're excited. The whole crew (wife and children). They'll be in Rio for the last eight days or so, so they'll have a good time.

"Juli Boeheim In Rio" should be its own mini-documentary. Add that to the list of things I'd do if I ran SU Athletics.

What are they doing on the I-690 bridges? (Video) (PS; Hannagan)

The bridge repair on Interstate 690 in Syracuse is ABC.

ABC stands for "accelerated bridge construction," Jeff Hanlon, a co-owner of Slate Hill Constructors, explained Monday morning.

If all goes well, and it doesn't rain too much, Hanlon and his crew hope to have the $1.4 million project completed ahead of schedule and before the Dierks Bentley, Randy Houser, Cam & Tucker Beathard concert at the nearby Lakeview Amphitheater on Saturday.

The view from the I-690 bridge over North Franklin Street was striking Monday morning. A glance back from the bridge to the west showed an empty highway where normally 37,000 vehicles a day zoom through.

Commuters were forewarned for almost two weeks that the highway would shutdown after 9 a.m. on Friday at Exits 11 and 12 (West Street and West Genesee Street) and reopen at 6 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 8.

It appeared Monday that drivers had taken the recommended detours or found alternative ways into the downtown. Few traffic problems were reported except some longer waits to make it off the highway at Exit 11 and 12.

As commuters were making their way into the downtown, workers on the bridge deck used a piece of equipment called a hoe ram to hammer through the old bridge deck. The old concrete fell into trucks stationed underneath the bridge on North Franklin Street. Other workers were using jackhammers to remove concrete near the bridge's sides.

The trucks will cart away an estimated 440 tons of concrete generated by the project, said Gene Cilento, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
