CHOCOLATE-CHIP-COOKIE-DAY-GRAPHIC-2014-1024x543-349x218_c.png

Welcome to National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day!
  • Chocolate chip cookies, which were invented in 1933 when Ruth Graves Wakefield of the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts added cut-up chunks of a semi-sweet Nestlé chocolate to a cookie recipe.
  • The cookies were a huge success, and Wakefield reached an agreement with Nestlé to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate.
  • Initially, Nestlé included a small chopping tool with the chocolate bars, but in 1939 they started selling the chocolate in chip (or “morsel”) form.
  • The Nestlé brand Toll House cookies is named for the inn.
  • Originally, chocolate chips were made of only semi-sweet chocolate, but today there are many flavors.

Can Syracuse Guard Franklin Howard Take a Step Forward in 2016-17? | Orange Fizz - Free Syracuse Recruiting News, Always Looking at the Future of the Orange (orangefizz.net; Carter)

When Malachi Richardson decided to keep his name in the 2016 NBA Draft pool and forego his final three years of college eligibility, it widened an already-gaping hole in the Syracuse backcourt. As a freshman, Richardson started alongside Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney, both of whom graduated after the Orange’s miraculous Final Four run. Those guys were SU’s top three scorers, and they’ve all left Central New York.

And yet, despite those high-profile departures, Syracuse projects to be even better than it was last season. The frontcourt, led by potential superstar Tyler Lydon, is loaded with top-tier talent and reliable depth; a dynamic duo of freshmen is set to take the Carrier Dome by storm; and Jim Boeheim, 71 years young, appears to be getting better with age.

But an under-the-radar factor in the Orange’s improvement could be a second-year leap by Franklin Howard. If graduate transfer Andrew White doesn’t choose SU, Howard could start as a sophomore (Boeheim would choose two of Howard, Tyus Battle, and John Gillon).

Howard arrived at Syracuse with high expectations — he was a four-star recruit and the highest-rated player in Maryland — but struggled mightily as a freshman. He spent a good portion of the season locked in Boeheim’s dog house; the head honcho yanked Howard every time he even thought about taking a jump shot or attempting a risky pass. Howard was unfathomably inefficient in 2015-16, knocking down just 28.6 percent of his field goal attempts and turning the ball over on 26.8 percent of the possessions he finished. His player efficiency rating of 7.8 was about as low as possible.

Syracuse basketball: Former SU commit Moustapha Diagne will play for Western Kentucky (TNIAAM; Cassilllo)

So ends that saga, for those still following.

For those still wondering if Moustapha Diagne will ever end up playing for the Syracuse Orange, wonder no more. As reported by Adam Zagoria today, the former SU commit will join the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

Western Kentucky has added Buffalo transfer Lamonte Beardenand will add Former Syracuse commit Moustapha Diagne@TheRealBazo27.

— Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) August 3, 2016

And so ends a twisting, turning ride for the New Jersey (Pope John XXIII High School) since questions began to arise about his eligibility last summer. After failing to qualify academically for the Orange, he headed to Northwest Florida Junior College where he put up 10 points and seven rebounds per game last year. He made the error of entering his name into the NBA Draft this spring, which compromised his eligibility at Northwest Florida.

There had still been hope that the 6-foot-9 forward could eventually join the Orange program, but now that he's at Western Kentucky, that ship has sailed. Our own Kevin Wall points out that the "year of residence" terminology (reported by Zagoria) is NCAA wording that won't allow him to receive aid while he gets himself back on track academically. It's unclear if he'll be permitted to practice with the team (searches around the "year of residence" didn't seem to clear up the subject).

Could Tyler Lydon Win ACC Player of the Year? – Otto's Grove (ootosgrove.com; Kelly)

It’s only August, I know. Fall camp hasn’t even started for the Syracuse football team, yet here I am, talking about Orange basketball. I grew up in a basketball house; sue me. Actually, please don’t sue me. Don’t take that as an open invitation. I just say nonsense words, you shouldn’t take me seriously.

Except, of course, when I start talking about how Tyler Lydon could very well challenge for the title of ACC Player of the Year in the 2016-17 season. When I say that, please know that I’m deadly serious.

Look: we all know that this award is going to be Grayson Allen’s to lose. Despite having the most punchable face this side of some annoying character from a Kids in the Hall sketch, Allen is a terrific basketball player who averaged better than 21 points-per-game last year and will be the go-to guy on what should be the best team in the nation next year.

But after Allen, the Trip Master General himself (who will also be one of the frontrunners for the Wooden Award), there exists another tier of excellent basketball players who could potentially vie for Player of the Year honors. Included in this group are Duke freshmen Harry Giles and Jayson Tatum, UNC swingman Justin Jackson, Miami’s Ja’Quan Newton, Virginia’s London “Holy , I’m Still in College?” Perrantes, and yes, our very own Tyler Lydon.

What was that mysterious white plane flying in and out of Syracuse airport? (PS; Moriarty)

That big white plane performing multiple takeoffs and landings at Syracuse Hancock International Airport on Wednesday was an Air Force jet from New Jersey.

Christina Callahan, director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, said the Boeing 757 was from McGuire Air Force Base in Burlington County, N.J., 16 miles southeast of Trenton.

The all-white plane conducted a series of "touch-and-go" landings, a maneuver in which an aircraft touches the ground as if landing and then immediately takes off again. Pilots conduct touch-and-goes to improve their landing skills.

A public affairs officer at McGuire said the plane belongs to the 108th Wing of the Air National Guard, which is stationed at the base and provides airlift and aerial refueling services. A phone message left with the public information officer for the 108th was not immediately returned.

One likely reason the plane came to Syracuse, 270 miles northwest of McGuire, for the practice landings is that the skies over Hancock Airport are less congested than those in the Trenton area.

Tyler Lydon, Syracuse

Malachi Richardson’s draft stock soared thanks to a memorable NCAA tournament, but watching Syracuse last season, a different Orange freshman stood out as an intriguing prospect. His name is Tyler Lydon.

How many college basketball players can man the middle of Jim Boeheim’s 2-3 zone while shooting better than 40 percent from 3? You can probably count them on one hand. Lydon is one of them.

Lydon won’t need to play center this season with Paschal Chukwu’s arrival from Providence, but his combination of size, shooting and athleticism (Lydon registered 1.1 steals and 1.8 blocks per game last season) are unicorn-esque. His skillset is very similar to former Wisconsin Badger Sam Dekker’s; Dekker was the second-best player on a near national champion in 2015.

With Richardson, Michael Gbinije and Trevor Cooney gone, expect Lydon to flourish this season.
