Craig Forth follows path from Syracuse basketball to his one true love - education (PS; Ditota)

Rumors preceded the new assistant principal's arrival. Some heard he was a former college basketball player. Others were aware that he was exceptionally tall. But nobody knew much more than a rudimentary outline of the man who convinced the district's superintendent that he could transition from teaching first graders to administering a school of hormonal junior high schoolers.

And then Craig Forth arrived at Mechanicville Junior/Senior High School. On the first day of classes, he stationed himself in a primary hallway and as children poured into the building, he offered his hand for high fives. Within weeks, he knew everybody's name. He learned which kid played which instrument. He knew which sports each child played.

"It was a pleasant surprise," said social studies teacher Dallas Foard, "because here is this tall, looming, intimidating figure, and he's got this huge smile for every kid."

"And a heart bigger than that," said English teacher Paul Moffitt.

Forth, the 7-foot former Syracuse University basketball center, has graduated to principal of Mechanicville Junior High School, where he is determined to affect policies that will curtail bullying, instill a positive culture into the learning environment and provide the necessary tools for each student to thrive.

Ramsey blog: Syracuse and US basketball coach Jim Boeheim rips Donald Trump (gazette.com; Ramsey)

Syracuse University basketball coach Jim Boeheim is known for speaking his mind about basketball. Now, the Bay has roamed into politics, ripping Donald Trump.

Boeheim is in Rio working as an assistant coach for the United States men's basketball team. He shared his thoughts about Carmelo Anthony, eating in Brazil and, yes, Trump with syracuse.com. U.S. women's coach Geno Auriemma recently took a shot at Trump, too.

Here's what Boeheim said about Trump:

"You don't see the news down here. Not much, anyway. So we don't talk a lot about Donald Trump. But I will say that it's a sad state of affairs that he could be running for president.

He appeals to a certain radicalized part of the country that basically hates everything that's going on, without reason. I hope, and think, that when we vote in November the American people will wake up and there will be the greatest landslide in our nation's political history."

Jim Boeheim's Olympic report: Melo is pretty good, food is so-so, Trump is troubling (PS; Poliquin)

Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University's head basketball coach, is serving as an aide to Mike Krzyzewski on the staff of the U.S. men's national team at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The Americans (3-0, after defeating Australia 98-88) play again Friday evening against Serbia (1-2, after losing to France 76-75) beginning at 6 p.m.

This marks Boeheim's third consecutive Olympiad. He formerly worked the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2012 Olympics in London, each of which resulted in a gold medal for the United States.

As he did in both '08 and '12, Boeheim has agreed to share his Olympic experience with readers in Central New York (and beyond). The fifth of his 10 or so reports from Rio is presented here today.

Jim Boeheim's Olympic Report No. 5:

Well, we knew Australia was a good team, so we knew the game with them was going to be much different than any of the seven — exhibition and Olympics — we'd played before. The closest of those had been 35 points, but there was a reason for that.

Usually we try to play a couple of tough teams in the exhibition season, but we couldn't get anybody good to come over, so we were stuck with what we had — Argentina, China (twice), Venezuela and Nigeria. Then, we got China and Venezuela right away down here.

But Australia? They've got really good NBA players who've won NBA championships — Andrew Bogut, Patty Mills, Matthew Dellavedova and Aron Baynes. And they went out and shot 68 percent in the first half while we shot, like, 17-for-46.

Utica Comets radio voice gets promotion to NHL (PS; Kramer)

MSG Networks, the television home of the New York Islanders, has announced that Utica broadcaster Brendan Burke will be the Islanders' new play-by-play announcer.

He replaces Howie Rose, who had been calling Islanders games since 1995. Burke will team with Islanders legend Butch Goring to call all the action for the 2016-17 Islanders campaign.

"It is an incredible honor to be joining MSG Networks and becoming part of the Islanders family," Burke said in a statement. "It's very humbling to think I am following in the footsteps of two of the all-time greats in Howie Rose and Jiggs McDonald. It has been a lifelong goal to be an NHL broadcaster and to come home to New York City, and to work for one of the NHL's iconic franchises, is an absolute dream come true."

Burke, 32, leaves his post as the voice of the Comets after three years. The 2015's James H. Ellery award recipient for the league's "most outstanding media coverage" served as the team's play-by-play commentator, as well as pre-game, intermission, and post-game interviewer since 2013. Burke was also part of the television team for the AHL All-Star Game in 2015. In addition, since 2012, Burke has appeared on Fox Sports Net and Fox Sports 1, calling college football and basketball.
