Welcome to Black Cat Appreciation Day!

Because of superstitious beliefs in some cultures, black cats are sometimes associated with bad luck and, sadly, are more likely to be put to sleep or wait a long time to be adopted from shelters. Black Cat Appreciation Day was launched to show people that a black cat could be the perfect cat for them, and help raise awareness about black cats in general.

If you’ve been looking for a rescue cat yourself, why not consider a black cat? Not only are the superstitions about them bringing bad luck completely untrue, but you might find a black cat to be a fantastic feline companion for you! On Black Cat Appreciation Day, a fun way to celebrate, if you own a black cat, is to take photos with your pet to share and spread awareness about the day on social media. Children can join in by drawing pictures of black cats.

Syracuse basketball officially confirms date of game against St. John's (PS; Carlson)

The date of the Dec. 21 game between Syracuse and St. John's was reported by CBS' Jon Rothstein in early May. On Tuesday, Syracuse officially confirmed it with a formal announcement. The time for the Wednesday night non-conference game in the Carrier Dome has not been announced yet.

St. John's has won the past two games in the series with Syracuse, answering a streak of nine straight wins for the Orange. The Red Storm beat Syracuse in the Carrier Dome two years ago and then 84-72 in Madison Square Garden last year. That was the biggest win of the year for the Red Storm last season and the low point in a Final Four journey for Syracuse, which was playing under interim coach Mike Hopkins.

St. John's bottomed out with a record of 8-24 during the first year of its rebuilding process under Chris Mullin. The Red Storm were ranked No. 222 in Ken Pomeroy's ratings, the worst mark ever by a Big East team, but the Red Storm will look vastly different next year.

The Red Storm are expected to welcome three highly-regarded recruits, a junior college transfer and a partial qualifier who was forced to sit out last season.

Carmelo Anthony thrives in Olympics (D&C; Bickley)

The Olympics shine when held in reverence. When they represent the pinnacle of a competitor’s career. They don’t do much for professional millionaires who are judged by championship trophies, the ones who come to these Games in search of branding and marketing opportunities.

Carmelo Anthony is an exception.

They have made him the champion he has never been in the NBA.

“He has thrived in international competition,” USA Basketball Chairman Jerry Colangelo said. “He is here because he enjoys it.”

Anthony has long been one of the most polarizing players in the NBA. While the New York Knicks star has earned $181 million over his lengthy career, he has been criticized for being overweight, a ball hog, one-dimensional player who has lifted his team to the conference finals just once in 13 years.

Contrast that perception to his Olympic persona, where he has become the torchbearer of USA Basketball, maybe even the greatest male basketball player in U.S. Olympic history.

The latter might sound ludicrous, but entering the medal round of the 2016 Rio Games, Anthony is Team USA’s all-time leading scorer, passing LeBron James and David Robinson. In the coming days, he might put that record forever out of reach.

More importantly, he has chosen to play for his country four different times, a feat that is unheard of in NBA circles.

“I’ve been part of this since 2004, and I know what it felt like when the rest of the world was supposedly catching up with the USA from a basketball standpoint,” Anthony said. “I knew what it felt like to be at the bottom, and I know what it feels like to be at the top of the game as well. To say it’s a blessing is an understatement.”

UK targets set to compete in All-Star games (aseaofblue.com; Oakes)

Several potential Wildcats will play in Under Armour and Nike Events

Under Armour and Nike are two major players in the high school basketball recruiting scene and each company is gearing up for major All-Star games to be held this weekend, with several Kentucky targets competing in each.

The Under Armour Elite 24 game is entering its 11th year of collecting some of the top prep talents across the country for a weekend showcase that also includes a three-point contest as well as a dunk contest.

The rosters for the Elite 24 game were recently announced and include multiple Kentucky targets. The most notable UK targets that will compete in Brooklyn include Kevin Knox and Nick Richards (Team Clutch) and Hamidou Diallo (Team Drive).

Richards is currently a heavy Kentucky lean, with all nine predictions from 247Sports trending toward the Wildcats. Richards recently named a top five of Kentucky, Syracuse, Indiana, Arizona, and Connecticut.

Diallo is also a Kentucky lean, but Kevin Ollie and the Connecticut Huskies have been on Diallo’s trail for quite some time, and it seems that the two programs will battle it out for one of the top shooting guards in the country.

Knox, on the other hand, is seen as a Duke lean at this stage in his recruitment. However, Knox listed Kentucky on his final 10 list in mid-July. Right now, it seems like it’s a two-horse race with Duke and Florida State (his father’s alma mater) but being this early in the recruiting process, Kentucky could make a push for Knox if they choose to.

Team USA's 5 Best Basketball Players of All Time (cheatsheet.com; Bofah)

2. Carmelo Anthony

What a difference winning makes. The polarizing Anthony has backed into something of a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde persona between the NCAA, NBA, and Olympic ranks. In 2003, Anthony carried the Syracuse Orange on his back to a National Championship. He put up 27 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists per game through the Final Four, as a precocious freshman.

At that time, James and Anthony were framed as 1A and 1B rivals, who went a respective first and third in the 2003 NBA Draft. King James, of course, now reigns supreme above the NBA, after seven trips to the Finals and three championships. Alternatively, Anthony has been regularly dismissed as a one-dimensional, selfish gunner for a New York Knicks organization on the fast track to nowhere. Anthony has only made it so far as the Western Conference Finals (in 2009 as a Denver Nugget).

As an Olympian, however, Anthony has performed as the ultimate winner. When surrounded by talent, he will freely give up the ball and pick his spots within the flow of the offense. On broken plays, Melo will take over and score the basketball at will. At 32 years old, Anthony is now participating in his fourth Olympics and will likely close out his international career with three gold medals as the most prolific scorer in Team USA Basketball history.

Orozcos are few but Hebert works to develop the next one (lohud.com; Haggerty)

Jason Hebert has watched the Olympics. Watched as Simone Biles has seemed to, in his words, "defy the law of physics."

The every-four-years sign-up rush will soon be on at gymnastics centers across the country, including at World Cup Gymnastics, where Hebert has worked for 21 years.

"The Olympic wave," he calls it.

But the odds of developing someone like Biles are miles long.

Just as they were for Hebert developing John Orozco.

There weren’t nearly as many distractions for the southern Louisiana-born Hebert when he was growing up.

Hebert, a cousin of former New Orleans Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, used to watch every sport he could on TV and imitate the action. His mom worried that, untrained, he’d hurt himself.

So when a gymnastics gym opened nearby when he was 7, she immediately enrolled him.

“She threw me in and I loved it the first day,” he recalled.

Hebert gained three Louisiana state all-around titles. At 13, he was recruited to train with a national-level coach in Auburn, New York.

The move paid off. Hebert won the boys all-around title at the 1984 and 1987 U.S. Junior Olympics. Syracuse University gave him a full scholarship and Hebert became the 1992 NCAA Division I vault champion.

He was the last national champion for Syracuse men’s gymnasts. The university cancelled the program as a varsity sport in 1998.

Upstate NY explorers find 2nd-oldest confirmed shipwreck in Lake Ontario (PS; AP)

The second-oldest confirmed shipwreck in the Great Lakes, an American-built, Canadian-owned sloop that sank in Lake Ontario more than 200 years ago, has been found, a team of underwater explorers said Wednesday.

The three-member western New York-based team said it discovered the shipwreck earlier this summer in deep water off Oswego, in central New York. Images captured by a remotely operated vehicle confirmed it is the Washington, which sank during a storm in 1803, team member Jim Kennard said.

"This one is very special. We don't get too many like this," said Kennard, who along with Roger Pawlowski and Roland "Chip" Stevens has found numerous wrecks in Lake Ontario and other waterways.

The sloop Washington was built on Lake Erie in Pennsylvania in 1798 and was used to transport people and goods between western New York, Pennsylvania and Ontario. It was placed on skids and hauled by oxen teams across the Niagara Isthmus to Lake Ontario in 1802 after being sold to Canadian merchants.

The 53-foot-long ship was carrying at least five people and a cargo of merchandise, including goods from India, when it set sail from Kingston, Ontario, for its homeport of Niagara, Ontario, on Nov. 6, 1803. The vessel was caught in a fierce storm and sank.
