Welcome to Buttered Corn Day!

August 23rd means it's Buttered Corn Day and I don't know about you but I could make a pig of myself with buttered sweet corn. Especially if it's cooked on the grill. Even if it's not, just give me a bowl of hot corn and melted butter with a big fat spoon and I'm happy.

I was reading about the Health benefits of corn and wikipedia says "
Cooked sweet corn has significant antioxidant activity, which can substantially reduce the chance of heart disease and cancer. " Cooked sweet corn retains its antioxidant activity, The scientists measured the antioxidants' ability to quench free radicals, which cause damage to the body from oxidation. Cooked sweet corn also releases increased levels of ferulic acid, which provides health benefits, such as battling cancer. "When you cook it, you release it, and what you are losing in vitamin C, you are gaining in ferulic acid and total antioxidant activity.""

Nice health benefits! So lets eat more corn!

SU will be fine with or without Andrew White III (TNIAAM; Keeley)

It's been a perilous couple of month for Syracuse Orange basketball fans whose health and well-being depends on commitments from recruits and transfers.

First, Top 100 recruit Taurean Thompson toyed with our emotions for months on end before committing to play for SU and filling a critical spot on the depth chart. Obviously, Thompson's intentions were not to put Cuse Nation on edge (nor should it have been his concern either) but it comes with the territory. We love Syracuse basketball and care deeply about its continued success. Ergo, we have an unhealthy obsession with new shiny things that could potentially confirm that.

Now it's Andrew White III's turn to freak out the SU faithful. The Nebraska grad transfer brings with him a scorer's mentality and NBA-potential talent. Assuming that its true he's going to choose between SU and the VCU Rams, Orange fans are thirsting pretty hard right now for a confirmation. Rumors are flying and there isn't a day someone doesn't ask me if there's any news on Twitter or Facebook. If he comes to Syracuse, he could be the final piece in what looks like Jim Boeheim's most complete team in years.

If he doesn't come to Syracuse, though...you know what? We'll probably be fine.

Cause here's the thing. We don't even know for sure that White will be the savior we're all assuming he is. He could fizzle out. He could end up in Boeheim's doghouse. He could get injured. There's a million ways things could go wrong. SU fans should know...

Same goes for transfer John Gillon, who is stepping up into a new weight class of competition.

How did Michael Gbinije do in the 2016 Olympics? (TNIAAM; Szuba)

After winning AfroBasket in 2015, Nigeria snagged an Olympic bid to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics games. Nobody expected Nigeria to qualify for the Olympics much in the same way that nobody believed Syracuse could make a post-season run in the NCAA Tournamentthis year. Just making the Olympics was a win for Nigeria. Did somebody say gravy?

Anyway, with the 2016 Olympic basketball games in the rearview, how did Syracuse alumnus (yes he's an alumnus now) Michael Gbinije fare?

In his first game against Argentina, Gbinije finished with six points, three assists, four rebounds and a steal in Nigeria's 94-66 loss against Manu Ginobili and company. Gbinije would not play against Lithuana in the next competition due to illness and Nigeria fell 0-2 in group play.

Gbinije would then return the following game against Spain and shot three-of-three from the field for seven points. He also hauled in a couple boards, an assist and steal. Nonetheless, Spain was too strong and bounced Nigeria 96-87. The Detroit Pistons draftee would follow that up with eight points on two-of-two shooting from long range, three assists, three rebounds as Nigeria stole a win against Croatia. The 90-76 win over the Croatians would prove to be the only victory in Nigeria's Olympic showing.

In his final game against Brazil, Gbinije finished with two points and three rebounds in an 86-69 loss. Although these numbers are far from his numbers at Syracuse, it's worth noting these are the world's best basketball players. It's impressive that Gbinije was able to go out and hold his own.

His play of the tournament was this drive and slam against Argentina.

Manny's on Syracuse University Hill founder, philanthropist Lillian Slutzker dies (PS; McMahon)

The co-founder of Manny's, on Syracuse University's Hill, died on Thursday. Lillian Slutzker was 98.

She died "peacefully and with dignity," according to her obituary.

Slutzker was predeceased by her husband Emanuel, after whom the iconic clothing shop was named. He died in 1985 after a struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Lillian Slutzker continued to operate the shop for years, until 1995.

Lillian Slutzker was also a dedicated philanthropist whose donations to Syracuse University endowed the Lillian Emanuel Slutzker Center for International Services. She presented the $1.9 million gift to the university in 1999.

The couple moved to Syracuse in 1947, the same year they were married. They opened Manny's in 1949.

The couple is survived by their son Craig, who graduated from Syracuse University in 1979. They were predeceased by a son, Eric, in 1953.

Lillian dedicated her financial support and time to the university, especially in the years after her husband's death.

The case of Moosehead vs. Moose Wizz heads to a trial in Syracuse (PS; Cazentre)

The Canadian beer with the moose head on the label is taking its legal fight against an Upstate New York root beer with a moose head on its label to federal court in Syracuse this week.

The Canadian brewer is best known for its Moosehead Lager, which debuted its name and logo in 1931. It's sold across Canada and the United States. Adirondack Pub & Brewery began selling its Moose Wizz Root Beer, a non-alcoholic soda, about six years ago. It's available in 40 New York counties and online.

The Canadian company's logo uses a more-or-less life-like looking moose. Moose Wizz uses a cartoonish looking moose.

In its claim, Moosehead states: "Moose Wizz root beer products are so similar to Moosehead's beer sold under the Moosehead Registered Marks as to create a likelihood of confusion." The Canadian company is seeking damages, including the pulling of all Moose Wizz out of the market and the profits that Adirondack has made on the soda.

Adirondack owner John Carr says no one would confuse Moosehead and Moose Wizz. He points out that one is a beer and the other is a soda, and argues that his cartoon logo does not resemble the brewer's trademark.
