Welcome to William Wilberforce Day!

Wilberforce was a deeply religious English member of parliament and social reformer who was very influential in the abolition of the slave trade and eventually slavery itself in the British empire.

William Wilberforce was born on 24 August 1759 in Hull, the son of a wealthy merchant. He studied at Cambridge University where he began a lasting friendship with the future prime minister, William Pitt the Younger. In 1780, Wilberforce became member of parliament for Hull, later representing Yorkshire. His dissolute lifestyle changed completely when he became an evangelical Christian, and in 1790 joined a leading group known as the Clapham Sect. His Christian faith prompted him to become interested in social reform, particularly the improvement of factory conditions in Britain.

Syracuse basketball: Chad Ford says Tyler Lydon’s a first round pick (TNIAAM; Orsenigo)

You know what “they” say, it just doesn’t feel like August until we have our first official NBA mock draft for next year’s rookie class.

Well, it became official today as NBA draft analyst Chad Ford of ESPN.com released his ‘Mock Draft 1.0’ for the 2017 NBA Draft.

The Syracuse Orange’s Tyler Lydon, who has yet to officially begin his sophomore season playing for the Orange, finds himself right in the middle of the first round.

Ford has Lydon getting picked at No. 21 by the Indiana Pacers, saying this about the selection:

The Pacers actually dumped their 2016 first-rounder to land a power forward from the Nets, Thaddeus Young.

But Lydon is an intriguing prospect whose abilities to both shoot the ball and protect the rim will draw a lot of attention from scouts this year.

Michael Carter-Williams Was an Awesome High School Aladdin (complex.com; Stern)

Only three players in NBA history have averaged at least 16 points, six rebounds, and six assists per game during their rookie seasons: Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, and Michael Carter-Williams.

And while it may feel like he’s been around for a minute, MCW is only entering his fourth season in the NBA in a career that has taken plenty of twists and turns. He earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2014 thanks to his historic first year with the Philadelphia 76ers only to be dealt to the Bucks midway through his sophomore season. He later suffered a torn labrum that put him on the shelf for the final two months of the 2015-2016 campaign.

While putting up numbers that many would envy thus far in his career, people have been harshly (and perhaps unjustly) critical of the 24-year-old. Some argue that the current version of MCW isn't the same as the one that existed back in 2014—his points, assists, and rebounds per game have all dipped—but the Syracuse product is poised to prove that he’s still one of the top young point guards in the league.

Currently, he’s in the Philippines headlining the sixth annual NBA 3X event, which includes a three-on-three tournament open to men’s and women’s teams from all over the country. We spoke to MCW about his summer, the upcoming NBA season, his thoughts on Thon Maker, and his former acting career.

Shaq vs. Adirondacks: O'Neal to appear on 'Running Wild with Bear Grylls' (PS; Canedo)

Shaquille O'Neal, a force of nature on the basketball court, will take on a force of nature in Upstate New York for reality television.

NBA legend Shaq will appear next week on an episode of "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" in which the pair was dropped into the Adirondacks.

"Running Wild" is a reality TV series starring survivalist Bear Grylls, known for his show "Man vs Wild." Each episode features Grylls and a different celebrity dropping into a remote wilderness environment and having to survive the elements and find civilization. Ben Stiller, Dion Sanders, Kate Hudson and Drew Brees are some of the celebrities that have appeared on the show. A special episode that premiered in December featured President Barack Obama.

The show's first episode featured Grylls and Zac Efron conquering the Catskill Mountains.

Here's a description of Shaq's episode from simkl.com:

"After being plucked from a freight train via helicopter, Bear and NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal battle dense forest, blood-sucking leeches, and 200 ft. sheer rock faces in the remote Adirondacks in search of their extraction point. Along the way, O'Neal's infectious energy, tales of legendary NBA moments, and unwavering drive to help others reminds us why he is beloved around the world. The Wild will dole out everything it's got, but it's never met a force of nature like Shaquille O'Neal."

In July, there were reports that Shaq and Grylls were on the New York side of Lake Champlain to film a stunt.

The episode will premiere Monday, August 29 at 10 p.m. EST on NBC.

Syracuse University news stories you might have missed over the summer (DO; Sandler)

It was a busy summer in Syracuse University news. Here are some major stories you may have missed:

Campus Framework is released

The university released a set of near- and long-term updates and renovations in June planned for SU’s physical campus over the next 20 years. The Campus Framework is still in its draft phase and feedback is still being accepted on its website. Here are some highlights:

Near-term:

The
University Place promenade was completed Monday, transforming the street into a walkway. Another promenade will be built on Waverly Avenue, though it will be different in form than the University Place promenade and will not prevent traffic from passing through.

SU will renovate the
Carrier Dome with a roof replacement and accessibility improvements.
Archbold Gymnasium will be transformed into “The Arch,” a new student-focused health and wellness complex. The Arch will include a multi-purpose group space, two pools, an exercise gym, a pharmacy, four basketball courts and a track and cardio balcony.

Campus Framework Draft

The
National Veterans Resource Complex will be built on Waverly Avenue. The building will house a veteran-focused medical school and become an important location for resource and programming related to veteran and military affairs.
...

Is the medical school a go? That would be a big decision buried in the last line.
