Welcome to "According to Hoyle" Day

"According to Hoyle" Day is a day to honor Edmond Hoyle who died on this day in 1769. In 1741, he instructed people how to play the game of whist, a 18th and 19th century card game. Needing a standard set of rules for the game he wrote A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist. He was encouraged to publish it since it was so well received by his students. He published several versions of the book adding rules for other games such as chess and backgammon. The phrase "according to Hoyle" was used to describe the correct rules or procedures in any activity or game.

Nebraska transfer White picks Syracuse basketball (D&C; Roth)

The Syracuse University basketball team, a Final Four participant last season that lost three key players, is definitely reloading not rebuilding.

On Sunday, ‘Cuse Nation was celebrating the decision by 6-7 swing player Andrew White III, a graduate student from Nebraska, to transfer and spend his fifth-year senior season playing for the Orange. He chose Syracuse over several schools including Virginia Commonwealth University, located in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia, Miami and Michigan State.

White began his college career at Kansas and played two seasons. But stuck behind eventual NBA lottery picks Ben McLemore and Andrew Wiggins, he transferred to Nebraska. After sitting out the 2014-15 season, White averaged 16.6 points and nearly six rebounds last season for the Cornhuskers.

White declared for the NBA Draft and worked out for several teams but withdrew his name to retain his college eligibility.

“I thought Syracuse would give me the best opportunity to win and win at the highest level,’’ White told Josh Mathews who broke the story for RVG Gamebreak, a website that covers Central Virginia high school sports. “I could come in and be part of a rich tradition.’’

Later on Sunday, White, a Top 50 high school recruit in 2012, posted a picture of himself dressed in a Syracuse T-shirt and orange shorts. He wrote: “Excited to join Syracuse basketball.’’

Andrew White III to transfer to Syracuse men's basketball from Nebraska (DO; Schneidman)

Nebraska graduate transfer Andrew White III has committed to Syracuse, he announced in a tweet. Josh Mathews of RVA Game Break first reported the news.

White’s commitment comes after a long, drawn-out recruitment that included visits to Michigan State and Miami along with SU. Ultimately, White chose the Orange over VCU, which was presumably in the mix due to proximity to White’s hometown of Richmond, Virginia.

“I thought Syracuse would be the best opportunity to win and win at the highest level,” White told RVA Game Break. “I could come in and be a part of a rich tradition.”

White, who is eligible to play immediately, averaged 16.6 points and 5.9 rebounds for Nebraska last season en route to All-Big Ten Honorable Mention accolades. Syracuse will be his third school after Kansas and Nebraska. With the Jayhawks, White averaged less than seven minutes per game in 44 appearances over two seasons.

With the Cornhuskers in 2015-16, White shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range. That percentage would’ve been the highest on last year’s Syracuse team.

With the addition of Nebraska transfer Andrew White, how many games will Syracuse win this sesaon?

Syracuse Basketball: Why the Orange have a chance to finish in top four in ACC (bustingbrackets.com; Carcierci)

After landing Andrew White, Syracuse basketball has put themselves in the conversation for a slot in the top four in the ACC.

No one would’ve predicted Syracuse’s trip to the Final Four last year.

Mostly everything seemed to go wrong.

Jim Boeheim dealt with a nine game suspension that began at the end of non-conference play but poured into ACC play. The team bottomed out with a loss to the worst team in the Big East, St. John’s, at Madison Square Garden. The roster seemed to get tired toward the end of the season due to their lack of depth, as they lost five of six, including Pittsburgh in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

Then came Selection Sunday. The Orange won some quality games against Duke, Notre Dame, UConn and Texas A&M, but the way they finished the season had many predicting their entrance into the NIT instead of the Big Dance.

‘Cuse surprisingly didn’t just make the tournament but they received a 10 seed.

And the rest is history. The Orange defeated Dayton, Middle Tennessee, Gonzaga and Virginia to reach Houston.

Again, who would have thought that was possible?

In 2016-17, no one will be underestimating the Orange, especially after they landed the top transfer left on the market (and one of the top transfers of the summer in general) in former Nebraska Cornhusker Andrew White.

Syracuse was a middle-of-the-pack ACC team without the services of White. But now that they added the 6’7″ guard from Richmond, VA, things look a bit different on the surface.
