Welcome to Emma M Nutt Day!

Emma M. Nutt Day celebrates the first woman telephone operator in America.

Emma Nutt became the first woman telephone operator on September 1, 1878. She loved the job, and worked at it for 33 years.

This special day celebrates the world of telephone operators. It was a very important job for many decades. Today, the position has been eliminated being replaced by automation in telephone systems. Can you imagine what Emma would think about today's cell phone world!?

A little side note about Emma: According to Emma, she was "very thankful that my first name was not Imma".

Andrew White looks to build his NBA draft stock at Syracuse (upsidemotor.com; Stone)

Andrew White III certainly took his time to make a decision on where to play his final season of college basketball. White committed to Syracuse on Saturday, just two days before the Orange began classes for the fall semester.

From a college hoops perspective, the commitment is a big one. Syracuse, a Final Four team last season, now has a proven scoring threat to replace Malachi Richardsonwho left for the NBA after a hot run in the NCAA Tournament. Slotting White in as the team’s small forward will also allow head coach Jim Boeheim to shift Tyler Lydon to his more natural power forward spot where he can space the floor and generate serious mismatches against collegiate competition. For White, though, the move is about improving his NBA status after a tumultuous exit from Nebraska.

White declared for the draft last season, ultimately withdrawing after receiving feedback from various NBA teams throughout the process. “I wanted one more year to fine-tune my game and put myself in better position for the NBA next summer,” he said in a statement prior to requesting his release from the Huskers. So, what is it exactly that White needs to fine-tune in order to enhance his stock?

For starters, the 23-year old will need to showcase a more well-rounded offensive game. White is on NBA radars already because of his shooting prowess. Last season, he connected on 41.2 percent of his 211 three-point attempts for the Huskers and was one of the most efficient scorers in the country. In the era of pace and space where shooting is such a valuable commodity, White already has a leg up on the competition.
However, White is not a well-known playmaker from the wing position. His assist rate last year — his first season playing significant minutes — was a lowly 4.4 percent. For comparison, Buddy Hield, a player criticized throughout the draft process as “just a scorer,” posted an assist rate of 12.7 percent during his senior season. In order for White to wiggle his way into the first round next June, he’ll need to show that he’s a much better distributor than he’s displayed so far in college.

Martin sets non-conference schedule (thetandd.com)

South Carolina head men’s basketball coach Frank Martin announced on Tuesday his team’s non-conference schedule for the 2016-17 campaign, Martin’s fifth season in Columbia.

The slate features 14 games, with 10 home contests, including one exhibition. Highlighting the non-conference portion of the schedule is the Gamecocks’ participation in the Brooklyn Hoops Holiday Invitational, as well as a matchup versus Seton Hall in the Under Armour “Reunion” doubleheader at Madison Square Garden in mid-December. The Gamecocks will face eight teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago, with four of those NCAA Tournament participants, including Syracuse, which advanced to the Final Four.

“Putting together a great non-conference schedule is a big part of our jobs every year,” Martin said. “Once again we have challenged our guys by playing difficult away games and continuing to excite our fans with some great home matchups. We’re fortunate that we continue to play Clemson on a year-in, year-out basis, so this year Clemson comes to us. We are also excited about bringing the University of Michigan into our building along with some other teams that were all in the postseason this past year in La Tech, Holy Cross, Monmouth, SC State and Vermont and Lander. Coupled with that, we’ve got games at Memphis and South Florida and we have Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden and Syracuse at the Barclays Center - great opportunities to take our team into other programs’ home courts along with exposing us to the national media of New York City in playing in two of the great basketball venues in our country.”

Preparation begins for ACC Network (auburnpub.com; AP)

Planning, spending and even some construction projects are already underway at Atlantic Coast Conference schools in preparation for the launch of the league's dedicated television channel in three years.

Not to mention the heated debate about whether future football schedules will include eight or nine conference games.

With coaches and players set to kick off the 2016 season, some ACC schools have begun drawing up construction projects to either build or retrofit existing facilities with the space and equipment needed to produce programming for the ESPN affiliated cable network when it starts in 2019.

"We'll have to finalize some decisions fairly quickly," North Carolina assistant athletic director Ken Cleary said.

And of course, the most valuable content for the channel will be live, compelling games.

The programming content has restarted the debate among league coaches and administrators to either expand the ACC football schedule to nine games, or leave it at eight but require teams to also play two opponents from the other power conferences.

It all figures to add up to big money for the league and its schools, though nobody will publicly predict how much. When asked if he had an estimate for how much money the network might mean for Clemson, AD Dan Radakovich said, "Not one that I want to hang my hat on."

The ACC's most recent tax documents, for the fiscal year that ended in June 2015, showed average payouts of $28.4 million to its 14 football playing schools. The Southeastern Conference distributed about $31.2 million to each of its 14 schools that year while the Big Ten paid out about $32 million to each of its 14 members. Both of those leagues have their own widely successful networks.

An online only version of the channel is already up and running, though to the viewer, it's essentially a rebranded ESPN3 picking up the non revenue producing sports and second tier football and basketball games not broadcast by the primary ESPN networks.
