Welcome to Grandma Moses Day!

Anna Mary Robertson Moses, born September 7, 1860, began her career as a painter when she was 76 years old. Her primitive style depicted scenes with which she was familiar, peaceful landscapes and farm work. Her success story is just as "American" as her artwork. With age, her arthritic hands could no longer hold her embroidery needles and so she pick up a paint brush and expressed her creativity with paint and canvas. She sold her paintings at a local drug store for under ten dollars each, until being "discovered" by Louis Caldor.

By 1939 her paintings were being sold throughout North America and Europe, and in 1946 some of her scenes were depicted on Christmas cards. In 1949 she won the Women's National Press Club Award for her accomplishments in painting. On her 100th birthday in 1960, New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller declared September 7th Grandma Moses Day. Grandma Moses died at the age of 101 on December 13, 1960. She created over 1000 painting during her career, at least 25 of which were painted after she was 100.

Elite 2017 recruit Brandon Randolph schedules official visit with Syracuse basketball (PS; Waters)

Brandon Randolph, a top 50 recruit in the 2017 class, will visit Syracuse University this weekend.

The news was first reported by Pat Lawless of GiveNGo and confirmed to syracuse.com by a source.

Brandon Randolph, a class of 2017 SG from The Westtown School (PA)/PSA Cardinals (NY), will take an official visit to Syracuse this weekend.

It's the first official campus visit for Randolph, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Westtown School in West Chester, Pa.

Syracuse has previously extended a scholarship offer to Randolph. He is considered one of Syracuse's primary recruiting targets in this year's senior class.

Randolph is ranked No. 40 in ESPN.com's list of the top players in the 2017 class. He had a stellar summer on the AAU circuit, while playing for the PSA Cardinals. In the Nike EYBL summer tour, Randolph averaged 16.5 points and made 40 percent of his 3-pointers for the Cardinals.

Earlier in the summer, Randolph announced his top 12 schools. The list included Syracuse, North Carolina, Louisville, Miami, Alabama, Xavier, Arizona, Wake Forest, Oregon, Notre Dame, Kansas and Indiana.

Rutgers Hosts 2019 NJ Guard & Other Recruiting Updates (onthebanks.com; Breitman)

Isaiah Wong, a class of 2019 guard from Notre Dame (NJ)/We R1 (DE), will go on an unofficial visit to Rutgers tomorrow.

The 6’2” guard is only listed at 160 pounds, so he will need to bulk up, but his talent is starting to warrant high major interest. Wong played meaningful minutes as a freshman on the best team in Mercer County in Central Jersey. Notre Dame went 27-3 before falling in the State Sectional Semifinals to state power St. Joseph’s of Metuchen. His stock continues to rise this summer and scouts have raved about his game on twitter.

Upside. Upside. Upside. 2019 G Isaiah Wong sure has a ton of it. Standing out with his athleticism so far here at #FAA16

Wong starred at a tournament with the Hoop Group in early August, where he won MVP for his class.

Wong also attended Syracuse Elite Camp in late August and was cited as a standout performer by hoops writer Ari Rosenfeld. He visited Temple last week and received an offer during his visit, as per Pat Lawless. Verbal Commits states Wong received an offer from St. Joseph’s in June as well. It’s possible Pikiell and Rutgers will offer Wong on his visit today. Again, the staff is doing a phenomenal job of getting talented in-state players on campus this summer.

ACC Preview #1 - Wake Forest (dukebasketrballreport.com; King)

Wake Forest is young but Danny Manning is building a solid team.

When we touched on Wake Forest’s recruiting Monday night, we realized it was time to get going on ACC previews. With 15 teams, it’s a lot harder than it used to be so we need to start earlier.

And Wake is a great team to start with because it has a chance at great improvement.

When Danny Manning took over, the program was a mess. Skip Prosser died, tragically, of a heart attack in 2007. It was a real loss for Wake Forest and the entire ACC. He had really started something great at Wake Forest and was clearly a good man.

Since he died in July, and because the program needed continuity in a time of grief, his assistant Dino Gaudio was hired.

Despite some significant talent, things didn’t work out too well.

His teams appeared confused and disjointed. Counting the ACC Tournament, Gaudio compiled the most disastrous post-season record imaginable: a single one-point win and every other game a blowout.

He was gone after three years and replaced by Jeff Bzdelik.

Bzdelik was a guy who, well, let’s break this into smaller pieces.

His coaching and recruiting were questionable. But his PR skills were disastrous.

Bzdelik came across as an introvert, a guy who was unwilling to court the press or boosters. You might get away with a bad media relationship, but alienate boosters at your own peril.

The fans openly rebelled and, soon enough, Coach Buzz buzzed away.

Luxury private student-housing complex opens this year (DO; Wright)

Jared Hutter said he thought Syracuse University students deserve better in their housing. Hutter, an SU graduate, teamed up with two other SU graduates to create luxury student housing near Marshall Street called #BLVD404.

The apartment complex is in its first year and is currently housing around 140 students, Hutter said.

Hutter began BLVD Equities as his first step into the world of real estate.

The private student housing complex is located on the corner of University Avenue and East Genesee Street, close to the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Marshall Street and SU’s Main Campus. The name of the building is a combination of BLVD Equities’ name and the building’s address at 404 University Ave.

#BLVD404 hopes to bring a new kind of housing to the students of SU, Hutter said. Hutter, who studied entrepreneurship and finance, added that he was inspired to create this new era of student housing because he noticed that SU did not offer any luxury housing for students, and his friends from home had such luxury options at their colleges.

“I was in an apartment on Madison and (my friends from home) were in palaces,” Hutter said of his SU off-campus housing experience.

#BLVD404 offers two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments that include all the luxuries that one may not expect with conventional college housing. The rooms are spacious while offering laundry, internet, high definition cable television and maid service. They also come fully furnished, and tenants have access to a fitness center, coffee and snacks, lounges, recreation rooms and conference rooms.
