Welcome to Greenpeace Day!

It was 40 years ago that a ragtag group of hippies first set sail from Burrard Inlet in an attempt to stop the U.S. government from blowing up nuclear bombs off the coast of Alaska. Worried the testing could trigger devastating tsunamis, the young environmentalists initially called themselves the Don't Make a Wave Foundation, but soon ended up themselves making waves of their own under their new nom de guerre, Greenpeace.

The Greenpeace Foundations has since become the worlds largest, independent environmental organization and famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view or stock holdings) for taking a hands-on approach to a variety of important issues ranging from global warming to rainforest deforestation, overfishing and commercial whaling.

Mayor Gregor Robertson has proclaimed Sept. 15 the anniversary of the group's maiden voyage, to be Greenpeace Day in the homegrown heroes' honour. It's a day Barbara Stowe, the daughter of original founders Irving Stowe and Dorothy Rabinowitz, didn't expect would ever come.

Penn State to host five-star forward (pennstate724sports.com; Fitz)

Norristown (Pa.) Westtown School Class of 2018 small forward Cameron Reddish will be at Penn State for an unofficial visit this weekend, he confirmed with 247Sports’ Adam Rowe on Wednesday afternoon. The 6-foot-8, 196-pound prospect is the No. 3 prospect in the country in the next cycle according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Reddish is one of the nation’s most sought-after prospects, with offers from Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Syracuse, Villanova, Virginia and others. The Nittany Lions were his first scholarship offer back in October of 2014.

The nation’s top small forward, Reddish has three picks on his 247Sports Crystal Ball pegging him for Duke.

He led Westtown to a Pennsylvania Independent School state championship in February with a win over Germantown Academy. He scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists in the win.

Reddish was a first team all-league selection in 2016 and was a third team all-state pick as well. He was named one of 18 finalists for the 2016 USA Basketball Men’s U17 World Championship Team this summer.

Frank Howard might be SU’s wild card this season (TNIAAM; Caray)

Last season the Syracuse Orange freshmen had their ups and downs.

We experienced Tyler Lydon’s explosion in the “Battle 4 Atlantis.” Then Lydon went quiet in the beginning of ACC play, asking the question of whether or not he was not shooting enough. Lydon would eventually turn it on again at the end of the season and finish off a very solid freshman campaign.

We watched as Malachi Richardson forced up 20 shots against St. John’s (0-11 from 3-point range), resulting in an inexcusable loss to a bad team. He would improve throughout the season, to become Syracuse’s second leading scorer. It all culminated when he almost single-handedly knocked off Virginia in the Elite Eight to advance to the Final Four.

The third freshman for the Orange was Frank Howard. A 6-foot 5 point guard from Virginia. Howard wasn't all that highly recruited, tearing his ACL over the summer headed into his junior year of high school.

Last season Howard was used sparingly, only averaging 10 minutes per game. However, I was always very impressed with him. Howard is a special passer and when you couple that with his 6-foot 5 frame, his vision is some of the best the program has seen in years. Howard’s height allows for him to drive and kick out to the perimeter as seen at the 1:10 mark in the video below. Howard’s ball handling ability allows him to get into the lane and dish off a big man, as seen at the 1:34 mark.

Part II: Every 2016-2017 Syracuse basketball ACC matchup analyzed - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)

Syracuse’s 2016-17 basketball schedule is out, and I’m making a prediction for every single game this season. Today’s predictions will cover SU’s ACC schedule. Part I, which ran yesterday, makes predictions on all non-conference games.

W – at Boston College – About the only thing that the Eagles have had to brag about the last few seasons is ending Syracuse’s undefeated run in 2014. Don’t count on it happening again. Having lost their best player, Olivier Hanlan, to the Canadian pro league, the Eagles will not improve on last season’s 8-24 effort.

W – vs. Miami – The U loses three of its top players from a top-15 team last season, but it will use a top-15 recruiting class to reload. The Hurricanes should be a borderline top-25 team throughout the season. Miami was also a potential landing spot for Andrew White III. Perhaps that will be extra motivation for the newest member of the Orange? In any case, the undefeated season doesn’t end here.

L – vs. Pittsburgh – Why is this a loss? Because Pittsburgh. As former Panther Levance Fields said following his alumni ousting Boeheim’s Army from TBT this summer, “We own Syracuse.”

W – at Virginia Tech – Conference games on the road are always tough. This will be Buzz Williams’ third year with the Hokies, and he is starting to fill the team with his players. Nonetheless, Syracuse pulls this one out in a nail-biter.

W – vs. Boston College – The Eagles will struggle to stay out of the ACC basement.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyler Lydon will be an All-American | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Godnick)

Syracuse is out to prove that last year’s Final Four run was not a fluke, but a sign of things to come. The team is bringing back four impact players from last year’s cinderella squad, but one in particular will be asked to do more than he ever has: Tyler Lydon.

The sophomore forward made his name in the Big Dance last year with stellar performances in key games. This was no surprise to the Orange faithful as they had witnessed a young player with NBA potential and talent dominate the college game all season.

Lydon’s numbers were similar throughout the season, posting 10.1 points per game, along with 6.3 rebounds. He was consistently asked to play out of position, sometimes manning the small forward position, forcing him to not only defend quicker athletes, but score against them too; a lot to ask from a freshman playing in a power conference, but Lydon lived up to the expectations, and this year he is being asked to be one of the leaders on a team with even loftier goals. Many players have choked under this kind of pressure, but Lydon is about to step into a situation he is primed to dominate. In 2017, Lydon won’t only be the talk of the college basketball, this time, he’ll be the face.

Carrier Dome renovations: Can Syracuse build new roof over the old roof? (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson attended today’s Syracuse University campus framework presentation, to see if there was any news around the upcoming Carrier Dome renovation.

While nothing concrete (excuse the pun) was shared, SU’s Pete Sala did have a few things to say:

Sala says Dome is three projects to price out. There is roof, interior and exterior. School is close to finalizing roof price

— chris carlson (@ccarlsononSU) September 13, 2016
Sala says goal is to build new roof over old roof, goal is not to lose a football or basketball game.

— chris carlson (@ccarlsononSU) September 13, 2016
That second bit is bold — though welcome if it’s feasible. It’s obviously not ideal for the school to lose out on a full season of football and/or basketball gate revenue while the program(s) barnstorms around the New York State area.

But is it feasible?

Back in 1982, just a few years after our Dome was open for busin

Cal State Los Angeles’ Daryl Gross to speak at Pasadena Quarterbacks Club (pasadenastarnews.com; Ramirez)

Daryl Gross has accomplished a lot in athletics during a career that stretches two decades.

The Southern California native has been an associate athletic director at USC, the AD at Syracuse University and Cal State Los Angeles and even spent time as a scout for the New York Jets of the National Football League.

Gross will discuss his career and subjects happening in college athletics when he speaks Friday at the Pasadena Quarterbacks Club.

The group meets every Friday during the football season from September to late November at Brookside Country Club, 1133 Rosemont Ave. in Pasadena, adjacent to the Rose Bowl. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., with the program scheduled for noon.

La Salle coach Russell Gordon will also speak Friday.

Gross spent 14 seasons at USC, helping to lead the school’s 19 athletic teams. He is credited in bringing Pete Carroll to USC. The former Trojans football coach led USC back to glory in his 10 seasons, winning two national titles (Associated Press crowns in 2003 and ‘04) and four Rose Bowl Games (2003, ‘06, ‘07 and ‘08).

Gross then moved to Syracuse for 10 seasons. He helped the Orange in the school’s move from the Big East Conference to the Atlantic Coast Conference and was director of the school’s campaign to build the $19 million Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center.

He has been executive director of athletics at Cal State L.A since July.

Cleveland company to buy long-time Liverpool manufacturer for $260 million (PS; Moriarty)

Young & Franklin Inc., a 98-year-old manufacturer of valves and actuators for the aerospace and gas turbine markets, is being acquired by TransDigm Group Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio.

TransDigm, a maker of aircraft components, said in a filing with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission that it has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Young & Franklin for $260 million. It said it expects to finance the acquisition with cash on hand.

The acquisition includes Young & Franklin's subsidiaries, including Tactair Fluid Controls Inc. TransDigm said the purchase, which is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, is expected to close by the end of the month.

The company did not say what impact, if any, the acquisition would have on Young & Franklin's operations and workforce in Liverpool. Young & Franklin's headquarters are at 942 Old Liverpool Road. Tactair is at 4806 W. Taft Road.

"Both Tactair and Young & Franklin are long standing manufacturers of proprietary products with established positions, strong aftermarket content and an outstanding reputation based on product excellence," W. Nicholas Howley, chairman, president and CEO of TransDigm, said in a statement. "The company fits well with our consistent product and acquisition strategy. As with all TransDigm acquisitions, we see opportunities for significant value creation."

Young & Franklin began as a tool and die maker in 1918 at 107 N. Franklin St. in Syracuse. By 2006, it employed 300 people.

So the guy who writes for the juice is an idiot. Talks about Lydon being forced to guard small forwards when he is a 3 in our offense. Ummmm, SU plays zone. Who he guards depends on the opponents offensive sets, not Lydon's offensive position. Dope.
