National-Do-Something-Nice-Day-October-5-1-e1474396585835.jpg

Welcome to Do Something Nice Day!

Today is Do Something Nice Day. Go ahead, do something nice, anything nice. And, do it to, or for, another individual. It won't hurt...we promise.

Doing something nice for someone almost always evokes a very pleasant response. At the very least, it results in a smile. More likely, that person will do something nice to, or for you. And, best of all, doing something nice just might be contagious.

In keeping with the spirit of this day, set a goal to do something nice for someone. Perhaps, you can do this for several people. Then, sit back and watch the results!

Four reasons to get excited for the 2016-2017 Syracuse season (TNIAAM; Szuba)

You know the feeling all too well. The Syracuse basketball season ends in March (April if you’re lucky), the summer months drag and by August you’re so mentally stultified from watching your lawn grow that even Syracuse football sounds enticing.

Okay I take that back. There’s reasonable cause for excitement around the Syracuse football program despite being under .500. One can always find a silver lining and truth be told, good things are happening. But at the end of the day the football team sits on a 2-3 record — which is to be expected — and the paradigm starts to shift. This is the time of year where the excitement from football starts to taper off and the attention transitions towards Syracuse basketball. With that said, there’s a lot to be excited about heading into the 2016-2016 season.

New faces

Syracuse will boast a roster in which six guys who didn’t play a minute in Orange last season could vie for playing time. Syracuse brings in freshmen Matthew Moyer, Tyus Battle and Taurean Thompson. John Gillon and Andrew White are fifth-year transfers and Paschal Chuwku is now eligible after redshirting with the Orange last year. Time to pick a new favorite player.

Experience

Jim Boeheim could potentially implement a starting lineup with 21 years of college basketball experience.

ACC Season Preview: Can anyone snatch the title from Duke’s hands? (nbcsports.com; Dauster)

FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ACC:

1. Duke is going to be awesome, but they are not without flaw: This will be the most talented team that Mike Krzyzewski has had in Durham since Jay Williams was on the roster. There could be three top ten picks on the roster (Harry Giles III, Jayson Tatum, Marques Bolden) and that doesn’t factor in the NBCSports.com Preseason National Player of the Year, Grayson Allen, or Amile Jefferson, a fifth-year senior that was averaging a double-double last season when he broke his foot.

They’re loaded. No one is denying that.

But the roster construction isn’t perfect. (Is it ever?) There’s no real point guard on the Blue Devils next season. Frank Jackson is more of a scorer that can handle the ball than a point guard, the proof being the amount of time Allen will have the ball in the lead guard role this year. Moreover, Duke’s four best perimeter players — Allen, Tatum, Jackson and Luke Kennard — are all at their best with the ball in their hands, creating shots for themselves. That’s not ideal.

No one in the world is better suited to finding a way to make all of this talent work together than Coach K is, and it will be fascinating to see how he decides to put this puzzle together.

5. It’s Virginia Tech, not Syracuse, that you need to be all-in on: Syracuse, a Final Four team last season, got Tyler Lydon back for his sophomore season, brought in Tyus Battle and Paschal Chukwu, and added a pair of fifth-year seniors in the back court in John Gillon and Andrew White. But they lost their three best players from last season, including Michael Gbinije, from a 9-9 ACC team and they don’t really have a point guard.

The Hokies? They return everyone from a team that went 10-8 in the ACC last year, including wins over Miami (who was top ten at the time) and UVA, and have a head coach in Buzz Williams who is as good as anyone in the country and getting a group of under-recruited players to have a chip the size of Blacksburg on their shoulder. Syracuse could be good this season. Tech will be better.

Xiaopeng “Pippen” Yuan remembered by friends and professors for friendly, polite demeanor (DO; Watson)

Xiaopeng “Pippen” Yuan always wore a smile.

“He was funny and talkative, that’s for sure,” said Taylor Arias, who graduated from Syracuse University in 2015. “He brought a smile to anyone and everyone’s face when he walked into a room.”

Yuan, 23, a junior studying mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences at SU, was found dead behind an apartment complex in the town of DeWitt on Friday afternoon. No suspects have been identified in the case, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department.

Arias and Yuan met through the SU SummerStart program in summer 2011, when they both lived in Shaw Hall. Although she said the first week was awkward, Arias’s roommate was outgoing and they sparked a conversation.

“We were kind of laughing at his name and he was like, ‘It’s OK, it’s kind of silly, but just call me that because it’s easier,’” Arias said.

Yuan was adjusting to being away from home, just like everyone else, Arias said. Although they didn’t have any classes together, the two would hang out with the SummerStart group, eat together and help each other with papers.

The group would stay up late, Arias said, to talk and give each other advice.

Arias described Yuan as calm and collected — a “normal guy” with a well-rounded background. His passion for basketball was evident, she said.

“Everyone knew he loved basketball,” Arias said. “You’d always see him on the basketball court, basketball was his life.”

Tyus Battle, Syracuse: Jim Boeheim had a dynamic scoring freshman last season in Malachi Richardson and now he’s got another one in Battle. The 6-5 wing should be an instant starter for the Orange and can score the ball from deep as well as the mid-range area. This is a big time talent.

The NCAA will announce the men's basketball first and second round replacement site for Greensboro, N.C. on Friday, according to the NCAA.
