Welcome to Miner's Day!

The effort to create a commemorative National Miner's Day, on December 6, was successful. First it was introduced in the United States House of Represenatives by Congressman Rahall, Congresswoman Capito, and Congressman Mollohan. It was adopted there and went on to the Senate. Sponsored by Senator Byrd, Senator Rockefeller, and Senator Reid, resolution was passed by the United States Senate on December 3, 2009.

Thanks to the thousands of people who believe it is important to recognize the contributions of miners to the well being of all.

Syracuse basketball loses to UConn 52-50 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; photo gallery; Axe)

UConn Finds Its Way In Determined Win Against Syracuse
(courant.com; Jacobs)

This is not the Syracuse-UConn game at Madison Square Garden to be bottled, buried and dug up in 100 years for future mankind to relish. No, that game was played over six wondrous overtimes in the 2009 Big East Tournament.

Syracuse shot 14-for-54.

UConn shot 16-for-51.

The numbers tell one story about Monday night and it isn't a pretty one offensively.

The heart and basketball soul insists Syracuse and UConn are meant to play every year for eternity. Yet when the Orange shoot 1-for-13 from the three-point line and still have a 23-21 lead at halftime the mind says, yikes, maybe every other year would suffice.

This one was about as aesthetically pleasing as the projectile yuck coming out of Kentan Facey's mouth.

"Yeah, he has been throwing up and stuff all week," Rodney Purvis said after UConn beat Syracuse, 52-50, when freshman Christian Vital, scoreless to that point in his return home to New York, sank two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining.

In other words, it was beautiful.

In evening its record at 4-4, is this a turning point in UConn's season? Wow. With only eight healthy bodies, a zillion missed shots, too many missed free throws down the stretch, it's hard to say. We can say it was a victory of the spirit. It was a victory of determined defense. It was a victory that gave sturdiness to a team that was wobbling through the first month of the season with devastating injury after devastating injury.

Syracuse heated up in the opening minutes of the second half. The Huskies fell behind 11 with 13:10 left. It was one of those games when 11 felt like 21. Kevin Ollie screamed for a timeout.

Community reels from sudden death of beloved CNY teaching assistant: 'She was everybody's friend' (PS; Doran)

Kids were at the heart of Jamesville-DeWitt teaching assistant Shawna Marzella's life, both in and out of the classroom, according to family and colleagues.

When she wasn't working with special-education students at Tecumseh Elementary School, Marzella was advocating for them in the community, they said. She looked out for kids in the J-D All Sports Booster Club, in Boy Scouts, Little League baseball, Special Olympics and as a tutor and mentor, they said.

Marzella, 52, died suddenly Friday after being treated earlier in the week for heart trouble, said her husband, Bob Marzella.

The couple have two sons, Brian, 26; and Justin, 24, both J-D graduates. Bob Marzella is chief operating officer for Upstate University Hospital.

Staff and students at Tecumseh reached out to each other Monday as news spread of Marzella's death, according to teachers. Students signed cards for the family, and staff wrote down memories to be shared with the Marzella family, they said.

"Shawna was like the mama bear around here,'' said Megan Ames, a special education teacher who worked with Shawna. "She took care of everyone."

Marzella worked as in special-education at Tecumseh for the past 19 years - first as an aide and then as a teaching assistant. The kids and staff loved her, and she was patient, kind and loving, said Michelle McNeil, a special education teacher.
