Welcome to Measure Your Feet Day!

January 23rd 2015 is Measure your Feet Day! An unusual day out of all the ‘national days’ indeed. The story behind this day originates in ancient Iceland. Ancient Icelanders spent most of their free time either bowling or “shelbing.” Shelbing is high-fiving with your feet! When spring rolled around, a time known for extreme rainstorms in Iceland, the natives would run into their huts, and celebrate the rain by measuring their feet and then pairing off. Shelbing was a customary way to celebrate the rainstorms. Soon enough world leaders caught wind of this customary tradition and found a way to commemorate it. Henceforth, the birth of “Measure your feet day” on January 23rd.

Syracuse basketball fans open bar in New York City called 'Marshall Street' (DO; Mintz)

New York City is a hotspot for Syracuse University graduates, boasting more than 50,000 alumni who bleed orange, according to the university’s New York City website. Having the No. 1 nationwide concentration of SU grads, New York City offers many venues for SU alumni to watch games and reunite with old friends.

Now after six months of business, alumni and fans have another place they can call home.

About 193 miles away from the actual street in Syracuse is Marshall Street Bar and Restaurant, located in Manhattan’s Midtown East on 49th Street and 2nd Avenue. The owners aren’t SU graduates — Rob Gerola graduated from Le Moyne College in 1991, and Jimmy Cafiero graduated from Pace University in 2012. But they are big fans of SU basketball, particularly Gerola who has been watching since high school. They didn’t want to create just another sports bar in New York, so they opened up shop with the Marshall Street name, pulling ideas from the real street’s bars to create an SU-themed bar in the Big Apple.

Cafiero said the bar was originally going to have a live music theme, but about one month before opening, they realized that was a mistake. The partners had to pivot.

“(Gerola) came to me and asked me if I was okay with it because I’m not a Syracuse alumnus, but I was all for it,” Cafiero said. “I’m a ‘Cuse fan, and I know a ton of people that went there. It’s really the only college you can root for if you’re a big hoops fan from New York.”

Grossman: Syracuse offers little reason to think it can turn its season around (DO; Grossman)

The scene inside Syracuse’s locker room was one that’s played out many times already this season.

Team managers zipped up equipment bags as players quietly shuffled in and out, providing the only steady noise in a silent room. Eventually players spoke to reporters in hushed tones, trying to conjure reasons for another convincing loss in a season checkered with them.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim lamented SU’s defense, while his team praised Notre Dame’s talent and acknowledged they played a step behind in the 18-point loss on Saturday. But really, these explanations have threaded their way through the entire season. Against North Carolina. Against Boston College. Against St. John’s.

The same reasons continue to surface, and so does the same result.

“We know (this season is) a disappointment,” point guard Frank Howard said. “We’re not going to sit here and act like it’s something that it’s not.”

With a winless record outside the Carrier Dome and a bruising 8-5 non-conference record, pretending would be difficult. Syracuse’s (11-9, 3-4 Atlantic Coast) season has been marred by inconsistency, and the outlook is grim near the midway point of conference play. SU is more than one marquee win away from the NCAA Tournament conversation, but it had two shots at one this week against No. 9 UNC and No. 15 Notre Dame.

Simulating the Remainder of Wake Forest’s Regular Season (bloggersodear.com; Reinhard)

It was a great week for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, as they defeated the Miami Hurricanes by 17 and then defeated NC State en route to Wake’s first ACC road victory in nearly 3 calendar years. The Deacs now hold a 3-4 conference record with 11 conference games remaining. We wanted to simulate the rest of the season to see the distribution of ACC wins. What do the numbers tell us?

Syracuse basketball's 11-9 start is worst in Jim Boeheim's coaching tenure (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse men's basketball team still sports a winning record with 11 wins and nine losses, but that's an unprecedented number of losses for the Orange.

Syracuse's 11-9 record represents the worst winning percentage through the season's first 20 games in Jim Boeheim's 41-year tenure as the Orange's head coach.

In fact, the Orange's 11-9 record is two games worse than any other 20-game mark for Syracuse in over 45 years.

Syracuse's record fell to 11-9 with its 84-66 loss to 15th-ranked Notre Dame. The visitors' locker room inside the Purcell Pavilion was quiet as the SU players responded to reporters' questions in hushed tones.

"We know it's disappointing,'' Syracuse sophomore guard Frank Howard said. "We're not going to sit here and act like it's something it's not. We know where we're at. I hope it puts us in the right mind-set. We can't come out and keep playing games like this.''

In the Boeheim coaching era, Syracuse's worst record through 20 games had been 13-7 until this season. The Orange had hit the 13-7 mark on five occasions. In four of those years -- 1981, 1982, 1997 and 2008 -- Syracuse missed the NCAA tournament and wound up playing in the NIT.

Last year, Syracuse got off to a 13-7 start, but managed to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament as a No. 10 seed. The Orange advanced to the Final Four.

Boeheim expresses disappointment after SU loss (TNIAAM; Sigel)

The Syracuse Orange (11-9, 3-4) suffered yet another loss on Saturday, this time at the hands of No. 15 Notre Dame (17-3, 6-1).

Afterwards, as you might imagine, Jim Boeheim wasn’t in the best mood. Although this wasn’t one of his more exciting press conferences, he never fails to get his point across.

“I can’t even describe how disappointed I am in a couple guys on our team,” Boeheim said while shaking his head after he responded to a question.

Now, it’s not very difficult to figure out who Boeheim was talking about even if he didn’t mention anyone by name.

Tyler Roberson played 11 minutes, was held scoreless, corralled only one rebound and committed four personal fouls.

Taurean Thompson played just nine minutes, went 0-for-4 from the field, finished with two rebounds and committed four fouls as well.

The two point guards — John Gillon and Frank Howard — continued their poor play on the road...and in general. In 39 total minutes, the two combined for four points, four assists and three turnovers.
