Beer-Can-Appreciation-Day-2016.png
Welcome to Beer Can Appreciation Day!

Beer Can Appreciation Day celebrates that great day in 1935 when beer was first sold in cans.

Okay, laugh if you will. But, believe me when I say that Beer Can Appreciation Day is a big and important day to many people.

A lot of people do not know that there's a huge number of beer can collectors out there. Collectors meticulously open a beer can from the bottom, empty it (and drink the beer, of course), then wash and dry it. For beer can collectors, there is no shortage of types of beer, cans and bottles, and sizes. A beer can collector may have hundreds of cans and bottles.

Syracuse men’s basketball opponent preview: What to know about Wake Forest (DO; Schwedelson)

Syracuse (11-9, 3-4 Atlantic Coast) looks to pick up its 12th home win of the season against Wake Forest (12-7, 3-4) on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The Orange is coming off back-to-back road losses to then-No. 9 North Carolina and then-No. 15 Notre Dame and has lost three of its last four. The Demon Deacons have won back-to-back games against Miami and North Carolina State.

Here’s what you need to know about Wake Forest.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 4-0

Last time they played: The Orange blew out Wake Forest on Jan. 16, 2016, by a score of 83-55. SU received a key contribution from Trevor Cooney, who went 6-of-11 on 3-pointers and racked up a game-high 25 points, 21 of which came in the first half. While Tyler Roberson (16 points), Michael Gbinije (15 points) and Tyler Lydon (11 points) carried Syracuse’s scoring, no Wake Forest player scored more than 10 points. The Orange beat the Demon Deacons with 30 points off 18 turnovers and 32 points in the paint.

SU vs. WF preview: Q&A with Blogger So Dear (TNIAAM; Szuba and Reinhard)

The Syracuse Orange (11-9, 3-4) take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (12-7, 3-4) at home on Tuesday. Jim Boeheim’s team will tip off from the Carrier Dome after an unsuccessful two game road trip last week. Both teams will compete to reach the ever-so-venerable mark of .500 in the conference.

To preview the matchup, we brought on Robert Reinhard from Blogger So Dear. Let’s delve into the Q&A.

TNIAAM: You guys are on a two game win streak. What's worked well the last two games?

It's a slight cop out to say schedule, but I think that's part of it. Wake started ACC play just 1-4, but those 5 games includes trips to Charlottesville and Tallahassee, as well as a home game against UNC.

Wake was able to blow out Miami because they were excellent from deep (47%) and also got John Collins a lot of great looks around the basket (64% from inside the arc). Additionally, they have been doing an excellent job of eliminating turnovers and making a very high percentage of free throws. Wake didn't shoot as well from outside the arc against NC State (27%), but were able to get John Collins looks inside and were outstanding from the free throw line.

TNIAAM: How good is John Collins?

He's damn good. He's currently 2nd in the ACC in Ken Pomeroy's ACC Player of the Year race. He is an elite rebounder and is very efficient. He is one of the better players in the country at drawing fouls, and makes 70% of his free throw attempts. He's a very smooth player who has incredible footwork and touch around the basket. In addition to that, he's also developed into one of the better shot blockers in the ACC.

Beat writers offer split predictions for Syracuse-Wake Forest matchup (DO; Staff)

After back-to-back road losses against Top 15 teams, Syracuse (11-9, 3-4 Atlantic Coast) returns home to take on Wake Forest (12-7, 3-4) on Tuesday night. Here’s how our beat writers think the game will end.

Connor Grossman (12-8)

Syracuse 77, Wake Forest 70

For at least one more game, Syracuse will continue pedaling the narrative that it’s a different (better) team in the Carrier Dome than outside of it. That storyline is much likelier to shift after this weekend’s tilt against No. 6 Florida State. But against Wake Forest, SU won’t need its best game of the year to grab a fourth conference win. The Orange would do well though to flex some depth behind Tyler Lydon, Andrew White and Tyus Battle. Specifically in the frontcourt, Taurean Thompson, Tyler Roberson and Dajuan Coleman have been neutralized offensively. A big game out of that trio would be a good start to imagining an upset over the Seminoles, not to mention a win over the Demon Deacons.

Matt Schneidman (10-10)
Holding a wake
Wake forest 81, Syracuse 70

The Demon Deacons have scored 94.5 points in back-to-back wins heading into the Carrier Dome on Tuesday night. Syracuse, well, we know how the Orange fared this past week in its first two chances for signature conference wins. So much for being much better at home than on the road, as Jim Boeheim’s team continues its worst start ever under the head coach by slipping one game closer to .500. At this point, the NCAA Tournament isn’t even in the rearview mirror. The NIT may not even be within sight after this home loss.

Dion Waiters hits game-winning 3 pointer vs. Warriors, scores 33 points (video) (PS; video; Murray)

Dion Waiters came through in the clutch on Monday night.

The Miami Heat guard capped off a 33-point performance with a game-winning 3-pointer over Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson with 0.6 seconds to play for a 105-102 victory

Waiters was 13-for-20 from the field and 6-for-8 from the 3-point line. He also grabbed five rebounds and had four assists.

It was the second straight 33-point effort for Waiters, a former Syracuse star. He scored the same amount in a win over Milwaukee on Saturday. The 33 points tied a career high.

Wegmans to build store in Virginia Beach (PS; Moriarty)

Wegmans, the popular Upstate New York-based supermarket chain, has officials in Virginia Beach, Va., excited about the possibility of getting a Wegmans in their city.

The grocer, which has eight stores in the Syracuse and Auburn area, has submitted plans to build a 130,000-square-foot store at the intersection of U.S. Route 58 and Independence Boulevard, according to WVEC television.

The store would replace a long-vacant shopping plaza, Towne Center Market Place.

Mayor William Sessoms, Jr. told WTKR television that city officials have wanted Wegmans to come to Virginia Beach "for a very long time."

"That Virginia Beach attracts this kind of quality retailer is a testament to the potential of our community to continue to grow and prosper," he said. "The only day that will be better than the announcement day will be the day it opens."

Wegmans operates 92 stores - 46 in New York, 17 in Pennsylvania, 7 in New Jersey, 10 in Virginia, 8 in Maryland and 4 in Massachusetts. Founded in 1916 and headquartered in Rochester, the family-owned company has been slowly expanding down the East Coast.

The opening of a new Wegmans, or even just a report that one might be on the way, often generates excitement in a community.

The chain is known for its big stores, large selection of prepared foods and elaborate displays that Adweek said evoke "the old-world feel of an open-air market."
