Welcome to "e" Day!

"e" is one of those amazing numbers that arises naturally in the scheme of things.

Today, 2/7, is celebrated as "e" Day, since the first 2 digits in the number "e" are 2 and 7.

Other special numbers include "pi" (π = 3.141592653..., celebrated on Mar 14th), which is the circumference of any circle divided by its diameter; and "phi" φ = 1.6180339887..., which is the so-called "beauty ratio". These numbers are irrational (that is, their decimals go on forever and never repeat).

e is also an irrational number and it has value:

e = 2.718281828459...

The number e was "discovered" by several mathematicians (Oughtred, Huygens, Jacob Bernoulli, Mercator and Leibniz) but they didn't quite know they had stumbled on it and didn't necessarily know its significance at first.

Syracuse travels to Clemson seeking 2nd straight road win (hearaldcourier.com; AP; Kekis)

Syracuse has won four straight games to become somewhat more than an afterthought for the postseason. The Orange is intent on keeping that streak going as it hits the perilous road in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the second time in a week.

"We're rolling," said leading scorer Andrew White, who's tied with Pitt's Jamel Artis for the lead in scoring (20.5) in conference games. "We're going to have to play better on the road than we did our last road game if we're going to come out with it (a win). The best way to keep momentum is to keep urgency."

The recent surge for Syracuse (15-9, 7-4 ACC) has the Orange alone in fifth place in the ACC, ahead of No. 18 Duke (6-4), Notre Dame (6-5), and Virginia Tech (5-5).

"This team has had a lot of adversity, obviously," coach Jim Boeheim said after Saturday's four-point win over then-No. 9 Virginia . "Four games ago, we were in a deep hole we had to work our way out of. They've done a great job. They just keep playing, keep fighting. Very proud of this team."

Before the conference tournament in Brooklyn in early March, the Orange also has two games against both No. 4 Louisville and Georgia Tech, plays at Pittsburgh, and hosts the Blue Devils.

"We have to make sure we can keep this momentum going," White said. "It feels good. We won four in a row. I don't want to go 4-1. We don't know what we're going to need at the end of the year."

The Tigers (13-9, 3-7 ACC) entered Sunday's game against then-No. 15 Florida State riding a two-game winning streak, but they committed a season-high 22 turnovers that led to 35 points for the Seminoles and lost badly, 109-61.

Beat writers offer split predictions for Syracuse-Clemson matchup (DO; Staff)

Syracuse (15-9, 7-4 Atlantic Coast) takes on Clemson (13-9, 3-7) on the road in its next matchup. A win extends Syracuse’s streak to five straight.

Here’s how our beat writers think the game will unfold.

Connor Grossman (14-10)
On the rise
Syracuse 76, Clemson 62

All three of our predictions are vastly different, an emblematic sign of a completely unpredictable season. But right now, Syracuse is streaking. Beating two ranked opponents and collecting the season’s first road win in the last two weeks has the Orange primed to squash a Clemson team that just lost by 48 to Florida State. Jaron Blossomgame and his 17.7 points per game is going to give SU’s defense fits, and the Tigers have hung close with ACC elites North Carolina, Notre Dame and Virginia. Timing is everything, though. With one team rising up the conference standings while the other is on its way down, Syracuse pushes Clemson down a bit further with a convincing win.

Matt Schneidman (11-13)
900
Syracuse 74, Clemson 70

The Orange is rolling and starting to pop back up in NCAA Tournament bubble talks. Clemson is square on the fence for the 68-team field as well, so the winner here presumably gains an edge over the other. While the Orange’s road defense has been horrific, SU starts to turn a corner here and holds the Tigers to “only” 70. Andrew White makes it five straight games with 20-plus points and Tyler Lydon gets back on track in the scoring column as Jim Boeheim picks up official win No. 900.

Graduate transfer rule change shaking up college basketball 5 years after implementation (DO; Schwedelson)

When Andrew White sits down to watch a college basketball game on TV, he finds the announcers talking about him. Even though Syracuse wasn’t playing, their discussions centered on players like White.

They explained the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule, which allows players who have received their undergraduate degree to transfer without sitting out a year. Some coaches and players like the rule. Others don’t. But many of them, such as the announcers, haven’t been in White’s shoes.

“There are a lot of people who have an issue with it,” White said, “until they have an ability to get that player that they can add to their roster last minute. … I’m kind of Mr. Grad Transfer himself. Hey, I mean, that’s the rule. I followed the rule.”

As coaches gain familiarity with the rule, more teams nationwide are plugging in players to immediately fill holes in between years. Five years after implementing the rule, five Atlantic Coast Conference teams this season — including Virginia, which kicked Auburn transfer Austin Nichols off the team before the year — have dipped into the graduate transfer market. After never previously taking a graduate transfer, SU head coach Jim Boeheim has added two this year in White and John Gillon.

Proposal to demolish Chuck's, other businesses approved (DO; Gedetsis)

The demolition of a string of South Crouse Avenue businesses – including the popular bar Hungry Chuck’s – jumped over its first major hurdle Monday night as the Syracuse Planning Commission passed the proposal.

BLVD Equities, a real estate development firm based in New Jersey, proposed demolishing the structures at 727 S. Crouse Ave. — where Chuck’s and Funk ‘n Waffles are located — and constructing an eight-story “mixed use building.”

Jared Hutter and Brian Rosen, BLVD Equities partners, celebrated with a fist bump when the approval of the proposal was announced. The Planning Commission unanimously approved the combination of two properties and waived a parking requirement that caused the vote to be tabled during the January meeting.

“It’s been a long road, and we’re excited to push forward,” Hutter said.

Theobald said he plans to have Chuck’s move into the new space and remain in the area long-term.

Hutter previously said he was not comfortable giving a potential timeline for the demolition and construction of the project. But several people close to the project, including Chuck’s owner Stephen Theobald, said the construction could start as soon as May, and that students would hopefully be able to live in the complex starting in the 2018-2019 academic year.
