Welcome to Be Humble Day!

Humility may be the most difficult of all the virtues to truly attain. There seems to be a paradox in that claiming to have humility may be an act of pride. Some people might be prideful in their humility… or something like that. Either way, Be Humble Day focuses on humbling yourself. There is no boasting allowed on Be Humble Day. Choosing not to brag about your successes and abilities can prove to be much more difficult than one might anticipate, as the culture surrounding us is often centered on self and the successes achieved by an individual. Throughout the ages philosophers and the average Joe alike have pondered humility and what it means to be truly humble. It is a difficult question to answer and the final answer may never fully present itself. But perhaps the seeking of humility is more important than the achieving.

Three things to know

▪ Duke is leading the ACC in 3-pointers per game in league play with an average of 9.0. Sophomore guard Luke Kennard has a three-point percentage at 45.5, helpful going up against Syracuse’s signature zone. Kennard plays more than 35 minutes a game.

▪ Forward Amile Jefferson is closing in on the 1,000-point list. The graduate student forward needs 22 more to make the cut. He averages more than 11 points a game, and Duke has four regular-season games left.

▪ Syracuse needs a high-quality win over Duke to help its chances of making the NCAA tournament. The Orange is shooting 26.2 in its current three-game losing streak and will be going up against a Duke team with a 29.9 percent three-point defense, which is eighth best in the country.

Here We Are: Syracuse Has to Beat Duke | Orange Fizz - Free Syracuse Recruiting News, Always Looking at the Future of the Orange (orangefizz.net; Grossman)

The Orange have long been known as Cardiac Cuse because they never seem to play in blowouts. Winning or losing, no matter the margin, the game always seems to end up as a nail-biter (look no further than Sunday’s crushing loss to Georgia Tech). Well, Cardiac Cuse can apply to this entire season and now we are in the final minute of the 2016-17 season and the Orange need to pull another rabbit out of the hat to make the tournament.

Recent losses to Georgia Tech and Pitt have pushed the Orange to the very edge of the bubble and the team is in desperate need of one more big win to give the committee a reason to put them into the big dance. Look no further for that chance than Wednesday night when the red hot Blue Devils come to the Carrier Dome. This is not the Duke team of early-mid January. Coach K is back and the Blue Devils are playing some absolutely phenomenal basketball, having rattled off seven straight wins, including double digit victories over Notre Dame, UNC and Virginia.

Syracuse does have one thing going their way on Wednesday; they are playing at the Carrier Dome. It is no secret that the Orange haven’t had much success on the road this year but in the last month, the Orange knocked off two top ten opponents at home in Florida State and Virginia and took a third in Louisville to overtime. However, we are past the point of being content with giving an elite team a good game. Syracuse needs to put together a signature win. There are two chances to do it, but if one thinks that the task on Wednesday is daunting, they might want to forget about the Orange’s next game on the road against Louisville. Surely most Syracuse fans have blocked out any memories of last season’s 72-58 defeat to the Cardinals where Louisville essentially ran their own dunk contest for the final ten minutes.

Never say never, but it sure seems like Wednesday is a must-win game for the Orange. It should be a good one in front of 30,000 at the Carrier Dome

Duke vs. Syracuse Game Preview
When: Wednesday, Feb. 22 – 7:00 p.m. ET
Where: Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY
TV Broadcast: ESPN

Mike Krzyzewski and the No. 10 Blue Devils (22-5, 10-4 ACC) are coming off of a close win over a Wake Forest team that could not break its long losing streak against its in-state ACC foe. Despite another standout game from star big man John Collins, who had a career-best 31 points and added 15 rebounds, the Demon Deacons have still not won at Cameron Indoor Stadium since Tim Duncan was a senior. The Blue Devils claimed a 99-94 victory this past Saturday for their seventh straight win. Luke Kennard scored 23 points, freshman Jayson Tatum added 19 and Amile Jefferson had 16 for the Blue Devils, who shot 59 percent from the floor as well as connecting on 13 3-pointers.

Meanwhile, Jim Boeheim’s Orange (16-12, 8-7) had no answer for how to contain Georgia Tech big man Ben Lammers on Sunday night, as he scored 23 points en route to the Yellow Jackets holding on for a 71-65 win. Lammers dominated on both ends of the floor, as he added seven blocks, and Syracuse missed 15 of its first 17 shots in the second half to help put itself in a 13-point deficit.

When these teams last met in January 2016 in Durham, Syracuse’s Tyler Roberson had 14 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in a 64-62 win. Roberson set the arena record for boards by a visitor, breaking the previous mark of 18 set in 1957 and matched by North Carolina’s Sean May in 2005. This game will be historic because two head coaches with 1,000 career wins will be facing each other for the first time in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history.

Duke Wins If …
… The Blue Devils continue to get excellent play from Tatum, who scored a career-high 28 points and connected on six 3-pointers in the win at Virginia last week. Tatum followed that up with three more 3’s in the team’s close win over Wake Forest, and he’s been able to give the Blue Devils both a post and perimeter presence. He has provided Coach K with a very good No. 3 option behind leading scorers Kennard and Grayson Allen.

Rico's Ristorante in E. Syracuse, a favorite for Italian food, to close in September (PS; Cazentre)

Rico's Ristorante, which has been serving hearty and reasonably priced Italian-American cuisine since 1997, will close in September.

Steve Geremia, who has been running the restaurant at 320 E. 1st St. in East Syracuse with his father, Enrico, confirmed the closing. The lease expires Oct. 1, he said.

In recent years, Steve Geremia has taken a greater role in running the restaurant. It remains a local standard bearer for pasta, steaks, chops and seafood, and is also frequently booked for private parties and events.

In 2001, former Post-Standard restaurant reviewer Yolanda Wright described Rico's as "a quintessential Italian family restaurant, where women in expensive outfits tuck giant linen napkins under their chins to avoid red-sauce disasters, and it's not unusual for a waitress to greet a regular customer with a kiss on the cheek."

Visiting again in 2009, Wright wrote: "If you're tired of fancy food, frilly edible towers and sky-high prices, Rico's Ristorante in East Syracuse is ready to dish up hearty portions of good Italian-American food at moderate prices ... ."

Steve Geremia's sister, Jackie Geremia-Macko, posted a Facebook note on the closing Monday, "Have ya heard, Ricos Restaurant is closing in September," she posted. " gonna be a bitter sweet day ... really wish there was someone out there to take it over."

The time is now for Syracuse

No game for the Orange may have greater importance this season than the one that they will play Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome against Duke.

Syracuse is 8-7 in ACC play following Sunday night’s loss against Georgia Tech in Atlanta, and given its non-conference losses to St. John’s, UConn, and Georgetown, it’s beyond imperative that the Orange get to 10 conference wins if they hope to play in the NCAA Tournament.

Following Wednesday’s tilt with the Blue Devils, the Orange will head to Louisville on Sunday (2 PM ET, CBS) and then close out the season at home against Georgia Tech.

Jim Boeheim’s squad needs to win two of these next three games to feel good about itself heading into the ACC Tournament and with the way this team has played on the road this season, there’s a much better chance of beating Duke at the Carrier Dome than there is beating the Cardinals at the KFC Yum Center.
