Welcome to Casmir Pulaski Day!

Casimir Pulaski Day is a local holiday officially observed in Chicago, Illinois on the first Monday of every March in memory of Casimir Pulaski (March 6, 1745[1] – October 11, 1779), a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born in Poland as Kazimierz Pułaski. He is praised for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution and known as "the father of the American cavalry".

The day is celebrated mainly in areas that have large Polish populations, such as Chicago and Bloomington and DuBois. The focus of official commemorations of Casimir Pulaski Day in Chicago is at the Polish Museum of America where various city and state officials congregate to pay tribute to Chicago's Polish Community.

Inside Syracuse basketball: 6 reasons Orange rebounded after disastrous start (PS; Waters)

On New Year's Day, the Syracuse Orange lost to Boston College.

That loss, a stunning 96-81 thumping, left Syracuse with an 8-6 overall record. A team looking to put a mediocre run through its non-conference schedule behind it had stumbled out of the blocks in its ACC opener against a Boston College team that was picked to finish last in the league.

"After the start we had,'' said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, "I think it was mostly thought we probably wouldn't quite make the NIT.''

Fast forward two months and Syracuse sits on the cusp of the NCAA tournament. The Orange has gone 10-7 after its unimpressive start to the season and done so against some of the toughest teams in the country.

Syracuse has beaten three teams that were ranked in the Top 10 at the time -- Duke, Florida State and Virginia. The Orange has also chalked up wins over NCAA tournament-bound Miami and bubble teams Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. The Orange has won at Clemson and North Carolina State.

Even Syracuse's losses suggest a team that's playing at a level well above its November and December version. There are road losses to North Carolina, Notre Dame, and Louisville which are a combined 48-3 at home this season. There was an overtime loss to Louisville. A loss at Georgia Tech when Syracuse had the ball down two points only to have a highly questionable illegal screen call rob it of a chance to win or tie.

The 25th-ranked Hurricanes hoped a strong finish to the regular season would help them get one of the coveted double byes in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

But after losses at Virginia Tech and Florida State this past week, Miami will enter the postseason as the No. 9 seed in the conference tournament. The Hurricanes will open play at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday against eighth-seeded Syracuse.

The game is set to tip at noon with the winner advancing to face top-seeded North Carolina on Thursday.

In their lone meeting this season, the Orange — who finished the regular season Saturday with a 90-61 win over Georgia Tech to clinch the No. 8 seed — defeated Miami at the Carrier Dome 70-55.

Syracuse wraps up atypical season with vintage performance at Carrier Dome - The Juice Online (the juice; McGlynn)

There have been a lot of things that have gone up and down this year in Syracuse. The weather, Lamar Jackson and the men’s basketball team.

The latter has experienced a roller coaster ride since November. There were some pretty extreme lows for this version of the Orange. Think back to the 33-point home loss to St. John’s. Or the dud against Boston College. Or even the one-point loss at MSG to UCONN. Take your pick there about which is the most painful.

“After the start we had,” Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said, “it was thought that we wouldn’t make the NIT.”

On the flip side, there were some pretty intense highs. Beating then-No. 6 Florida State. Upsetting Virginia, again. And, of course, John Gillon hitting the mother of all buzzer-beaters to knock off Duke.

Each of those wins featured a court storming.

In other words, this wasn’t your typical Syracuse season.

The fans don’t usually storm the court when beating ACC opponents. Boeheim will only get his 1,000th win once. The atmosphere around Syracuse was different this year.

Even Boeheim admitted it.

“The fans have been great all year,” he said. “This [Georgia Tech game] was just another example of that.”

Yesterday’s blowout win over Georgia Tech – a fellow NCAA Tournament bubble team – certainly helps Syracuse’s resume when Selection Sunday rolls around. But based on the last 10 years of history with the selection committee, the Orange still might have a little bit of work left to do to lock down a spot in the Big Dance.

For fun (because I really know how to have a good time!), this morning I decided to go back through the fields for each tournament since 2007. I picked out every Power 5 team that earned an at-large berth with fewer than 20 victories, to try to get a feel for where Syracuse stands compared to teams in similar predicaments in recent years who happened to get into the tournament.

Now, don’t get me wrong – Syracuse also has a few things in its favor. Getting to 10 victories in the ACC was massive for this team, which now sits at 18-13 overall and 10-8 in conference play. Its conference mark actually bests most of the teams I’m going to be talking about here.

So who are these teams? Well, since the 2007 NCAA Tournament, there have been 19 teams from Power 5 programs to earn at-large berths with fewer than 20 wins:

  • 2016: Syracuse (19-13/9-9), Vanderbilt (19-13/11-7), Oregon State (19-12/9-9), Texas Tech (19-12/9-9)
  • 2015: Oklahoma State (18-13/8-10)
  • 2014: Nebraska (19-12/11-7)
  • 2012: West Virginia (19-13/9-9)
  • 2011: Tennessee (19-14/8-8), Penn State (19-14/9-9), Illinois (19-13/9-9), USC (19-14/10-8), Michigan State (19-14/9-9)
  • 2010: Wake Forest (19-10/9-7)
  • 2009: Wisconsin (19-12/10-8), Arizona (19-13/9-9)
  • 2008: Arizona (19-14/8-10), Oregon (18-13/9-9), Kentucky (18-12/12-4)
  • 2007: Stanford (18-12/10-8)

Former SU basketball players now rival coaches in Division III AA title game (video) (PS; Trimble)

While the Liverpool Warriors anticipated their battle against the Henninger Black Knights Sunday for the Division III AA title game at Onondaga Community College SRC Arena, coaches for both teams had bit of rivalry all their own-tinged in Orange.

Head coach Ryan Blackwell for Liverpool and assistant coach Lazarus Sims for Henninger were both former Orange men for Syracuse University back in their day, and both drew wisdom and strategy from their coach, Jim Boeheim, to try and maneuver their win. Blackwell played for the 1997-2000 team while Sims played 1992-1996. Both competed against one another before that though in high school match-ups, so rivalry and teamwork are somewhat cyclical to them.

"Its competition, but good competition. We both want each other to do well," said Sims, "but not on the night we play each other."

Ultimately though, it would be Blackwell and the Warriors who would emerge on top with a trouncing 73-51 victory to go the Regional Championship.

Ironically, Blackwell owes in part to Sims for his job at Liverpool, as Sims' alma mater was Henninger and the athletic director at the time was Ari Liberman, who went on to Liverpool, and Sims put in a good word for his friend and fellow Orangeman.

"After the last game I was supposed to wear Henninger colors," said Blackwell, citing their loss to the Black Knights during their last confrontation, "but maybe this time if we win he can buy me dinner."

"Me and Ryan will always be family because we both bleed orange," said Sims.

See 3 severe storm systems swirl over Lake Ontario in video from next gen satellite
(PS; Axelson)

Three severe weather systems formed over Lake Ontario last week, and the meteorological dance was captured in detail using the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's GOES-16 satellite.

Watch the video above showing the systems, called meso-lows, develop and track across the shores of Jefferson and Oneida counties.

The storms brought extreme weather including reports of thunder snow and hail to parts of Oswego County.

The GOES-16 is a next generation weather satellite that transmits continuous atmospheric imagery and data in sharp detail. NOAA's website says it is better able to track and predict hurricanes, tornadoes and other severe weather patterns.
