How should we judge Syracuse basketball players who leave school early for NBA? | The NewsHouse | Syracuse University and Community News - S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications (thenewshouse.com; Schneidman)

Since 2003, a dozen Syracuse men's basketball players have left school early for the NBA Draft.
If only Syracuse basketball players had a crystal ball that forecasted how their NBA careers would pan out, maybe – just maybe – they’d avoid the backlash that comes with a professional tenure that doesn’t unfold exactly as planned.

Especially with the recent influx of one-and-done players, athletes are constantly criticized for leaving multiple years of college eligibility on the table in exchange for money in the NBA, D-League or overseas.

Since the turn of the century, 12 SU players have left school early and been selected in the NBA Draft. Starting with Carmelo Anthony in 2003 and capping off with Tyler Lydon after this season, those dozen Syracuse players have experienced varying degrees of success in their professional ventures – some for reasons out of their control.

“I don’t like going back and (judging) years later because hindsight is 20-20,” said Mike Waters, who has covered Syracuse basketball for The Post-Standard for almost three decades. “These are kids who along with their families have to make their decisions in the moment. They don’t get to look ahead 6-8 years.”

For the most part, the players who have thus far enjoyed the most success have been ones who left early knowing they’d be picked near the top of the draft. Those include Anthony (No. 3 overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in 2003), Wesley Johnson (No. 4 pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2010) and Dion Waiters (No. 4 pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2012). The only exception is Jonny Flynn (No. 6 pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009), but a debilitating hip injury after Flynn’s solid rookie season derailed his career.

Syracuse Eying A 2018 Ohio State Decommit – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Syracuse’s Class of 2018 recruiting ventures include everything. From decommits, reclassifications, standard recruits and even a kid from Mars! (Mars, Pennsylvania that is. Hello Robby Carmody.) The latest development for SU comes thanks to Ohio State. Four star recruit Darius Bazley announced a few weeks ago that he is decommitting from the Buckeyes. According to At their request, this network is being blocked from this site. and Syracuse.com, Bazley has reached out to the Orange and the interest is mutual from the coaches.

Bazley is a 6-foot-8 forward who ESPN pegs as the 47th best player in the Class of 2018. The Ohio native’s decision to decommit came largely because he did not think playing for the Buckeyes was the best way to get him to his ultimate goal, the NBA. All of this came in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch, where he later went on to criticize the OSU program by saying it could not put him on a big enough stage, nor was he high on the incoming recruiting class.

But the Buckeyes’ loss could be a huge gain for the Orange. We’ve seen SU get off to a slow start that has yet to really pick up for its 2017 class. If Syracuse strikes out on guys like Tremont Watersand Jordan Tucker, they definitely need to make a splash for 2018. Bazley would be a great starting point.

The forward is your prototypical SU player: long and athletic. However, Bazley provides a different type of skillset. He has great vision and can decently spread the floor with his lefty stroke. However, his jumper still needs to pick up some range to truly classify him as a stretch four. He certainly needs to bulk up if he wants to thrive at the college level and beyond, but that can be a natural fix as his body develops.

Duke Recruiting: Jordan Tucker Update (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

As you probably know, Jordan Tucker is visiting Duke on Wednesday and Thursday.

We don’t know what he’s thinking but we do know what some elements of the competition are thinking and it’s not very positive.

Well not positive for them anyway.

A Small And Surprising Bit Of ACC History (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

As you guys know, we’re ACC fans too and we follow the rest of the conference schools as much as we can.

There are sometimes some pretty remarkable stories - Clemson’s Bobby Conrad has become a highly respected judge, Maryland’s (and Arizona’s) Brian Williams changed his name to Bison Dele and sailed the Pacific until his untimely death, to the still inconceivable story of Muggsy Bogues, a 5-3 guard who had a long and incredible career in the NBA.

You could go on for a long time. You’d have to, too, to find a more unlikely and remarkable story than that of Lois “Peaches” Golding.

Golding grew up in Winston-Salem, attended UNC and became a cheerleader. After school she taught in Nigeria before moving to the U.K.

Recently Queen Elizabeth named her as the lord-lieutenant of the city and county of Bristol.

She is thought to be the first black lord-lieutenant in the U.K. and is surely one of the very few, if any, from the states.

It’s a really cool story.

And if you were wondering, yes, the Queen calls her Peaches.

Boeheim's Army names sixth player for TBT, needs one more to qualify for tournament (PS; Ditota)

Donte Greene has signed up to play for Boeheim's Army, the collection of former Syracuse-centric basketball players who will compete for $2 million in The Basketball Tournament.

Greene, who played one season for the Orange before opting for a professional career, has technically been a member of the team in its previous two incarnations. But his overseas basketball jobs have impacted the amount of time he could spend training with the team and participating in the games.

Greene initially considered the Big 3 this summer, a 3-on-3 professional basketball tournament fronted by Ice Cube. When he wasn't selected in the league's draft earlier this month, he fully committed to Boeheim's Army, said general manager Kevin Belbey.

"He was very interested in playing. He was just unsure about his summer schedule," Belbey said. "He wanted to do both (the Big 3 and TBT), but I told him I need guys to be 100 percent committed. So we really ramped up our talks after last weekend. He's in great shape. I think he's really committed and really excited about it."

2 of Syracuse's largest office buildings sell for $35 million to investor from NYC (PS; Moriarty)

Two of Syracuse's biggest office buildings, totaling more than half a million square feet, have sold for $35.2 million to an investor from New York City.

Zamir Equities, which was founded by Asher Zamir in 2003, acquired One Park Place at 300 S. State St. on May 3 for $9.92 million and One Lincoln Center at 110 W. Fayette St. for $25.25 million the next day.

They are Zamir's first acquisitions in Syracuse and represent a 40 percent increase in his real estate holdings. Before the purchases, he owned 1.5 million square feet of office space, much of it in southern New Jersey and the Philadelphia area, but also in Georgia and Texas. With his Syracuse properties, his portfolio now totals 2.1 million square feet.
