Welcome to World Redhead Day!

  • The highest concentration of redheads is in Scotland (13%) followed by Ireland (10%). Worldwide, only 2% of people have red hair.
  • People with red hair are likely more sensitive to pain. This is because the gene mutation (MC1R) that causes red hair is on the same gene linked to pain receptors. It also means redheads usually need more anesthesia for dental and medical procedures.
  • Having red hair isn't the only thing that makes some redheads unique. They are also more likely to be left handed. Both characteristics come from recessive genes, which like to come in pairs.
  • Redheads probably won't go grey. That's because the pigment just fades over time. So they will probably go blonde and even white, but not grey.
  • Rumor says Hitler banned marriage between redheads. Apparently he thought it would lead to "deviant offspring."
  • Redheads most commonly have brown eyes. The least common eye color: blue.
  • Bees have been proven to be more attracted to redheads.
  • Being a redheaded man may have health benefits. A study published by the British Journal of Cancer suggested that men with red hair are 54% less likely to develop prostate cancer than their brown and blonde-haired counterparts.
  • Redheads actually have less hair than most other people. On average they only have 90,000 strands of hair while blonds, for example, have 140,000. However, red hair is typically thicker so it still looks just as full.

Do recent Syracuse draft picks tell us how Tyler Lydon will fare? - The Juice Online (thew juice; Marcus)

Yesterday marked the deadline for players to withdraw their name from NBA draft consideration. This year, like last year, players could not hire an agent and test the draft waters without losing their college eligibility.

No Syracuse player fell into this predicament this year, with underclassman Tyler Lydon declaring for the draft and hiring an agent shortly after the Syracuse basketball season ended in March.

Still, every year, the question remains the same, and does apply to Lydon this year: stay or go? Leave too early, and you could cost yourself millions. Stay too long, and you could cost yourself millions. Which category will Lydon fall in? I can’t answer that. But I can point to recent SU players as a guide.

Last year, Malachi Richardson left after his freshman year while his stock was high after leading the Orange to the Final Four. He was drafted in the first round. Lydon is a projected late-first round pick. Possibly second round. He had a good year for the Orange but not the expected amazing year. Still, his stock may not get higher.

BOSTON COLLEGE

Luka Kraljevic (6-10, 3 star PF); Vin Baker Jr. (6-8, 3 star )

Comment: An infusion of size, which helps. But neither player should have a huge immediate impact. Baker’s father played for the Celtics in the NBA.

CLEMSON

Malik William (6-7, 4 star PF); Aamir Simms (6-8, 4 star PF); A.J. Oliver (6-5, 4 star SG); Clyde Trapp Jr. (6-4, UNR, SG).

Comment: No top 100 kids, but three four stars should help this program in the long run.

DUKE

Wendell Carter (6-10, 5 star PF); Trevon Duval (6-3 5 star PG), Gary Trent Jr. (6-6, 5 star SG), Alex O’Connell (6-6, 4 star SG), Jordan Tucker (6-7, 4 star SF), Jordan Goldwire (6-2, 3 star PG)

Comment: Easily the ACC’s best class with three top 10 prospects that should make a huge impact, along with t
wo more top 100 guys who should be long-term prospects.

Hot soup, meals finally in sight for Picasso's Pastries in Syracuse (PS; Weaver)

The hot soup - along with sandwiches, salads and coffee mugs - is finally in sight for Picasso's Pastries and Cafe.

Kayla Brandt and David Zaczynski opened Picasso's in 2013 with the hopes of being both a retail bakery and a cafe serving homemade breakfasts and light meals.

Yet the city's zoning rules, and admittedly the owners' misunderstanding about the specificity of planning regulations, meant that for the past four years Picasso's could only be a retail bakery. They could bake a cookie and put it in a bag. But Picasso couldn't serve meals on plates in a dining area.

But Brandt and Zaczynski persevered, not only through the early years of launching a food business. They got to know people at city hall, sought advice and better learned what they needed to do to meet the planning commission's requirements.

"The city has been very helpful and responsive," Zaczynski said earlier this week.
