Welcome to Shavuot!

The holiday of Shavuot is a two-day holiday, beginning at sundown of the 5th of Sivan and lasting until nightfall of the 7th of Sivan (May 30–June 1, 2017). In Israel it is a one-day holiday, ending at nightfall of the 6th of Sivan.

What Shavuot Commemorates

The word Shavuot means “weeks.” It marks the completion of the seven-week counting period between Passover and Shavuot.

The Torah was given by G‑d to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai on Shavuot more than 3,300 years ago. Every year on the holiday of Shavuot we renew our acceptance of G‑d’s gift, and G‑d “re-gives” the Torah.

There is no Syracuse basketball recruiting decline (yet) - The Juice Online (the juice; Irvine)

Take a look at the chart below. What do you see?

To many Syracuse basketball fans who have been disappointed at the results of the 2017 recruiting cycle, this confirms what they already suspected: Syracuse recruiting is not what it used to be.

The three-year rolling average of the ranking for SU’s top recruit has steadily declined from No. 18 to No. 49 while that of SU’s second-best recruit has dropped from No. 32 to No. 76 – all in a matter of five years.

That’s one way to look at the numbers. But it’s a small sample. Let’s pull back.

An Early Look At Next Season’s ACC Race (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

For college basketball fans the off-season is for two main things: recruiting and speculation about next season.

The NBA playoffs are in there, but it’s not the same.

So speculation!

Howtheyplay.com has an early stab at next season’s ACC race. Here’s how they see it:

  1. Virginia
  2. Louisville
  3. Duke
  4. Virginia Tech
  5. Miami
  6. UNC
  7. Notre Dame
  8. Florida State
  9. Wake Forest
  10. NC State
  11. Syracuse
  12. Georgia Tech
  13. Clemson
  14. Boston College
  15. Pitt
It’s way too early for this but that’s half the charm. So here’s our way-too-early-take on their way-too-early-take.

UNC, Notre Dame and Syracuse are all used to success. They're all losing key pieces of course, but year after year they succeed. It’s not by accident. They won’t finish 6th, 7th and 11th.

We’re not sold on Virginia as #1 though the idea the recent transfers are due to improved talent is intriguing. Here’s something to consider though: if Mamadi Diakate and Jay Huff can both block shots effectively, Virginia’s defense is going to be devastating - more so than usual.

Some Syracuse residents to be without power overnight after large outage (PS; Maddox)

While most people affected by an Onondaga County power outage can expect to have their power restored tonight, others will be left in the dark until tomorrow morning, according to National Grid.

A large power outage swept through Syracuse's north side and other parts of Onondaga County around 4 p.m. Tuesday after heavy rains and strong winds hit the area. Several trees were torn down, and emergency personnel got a wave of calls for downed wires.

More than 3,500 people in northern Syracuse lost power, and another large outage was reported near Van Buren, affecting another 1,000 people, according to National Grid records.

The Van Buren-area outage has been largely dealt with, with only small pockets affecting fewer than five people remaining without power as of 8 p.m.

The Syracuse-area outage is now affecting closer to 500 to 600 people.

Some of them should see electricity restored tonight, but a large patch of residents near the Washington Square neighborhood may remain in the dark until early Wednesday morning, according to the electric company.

The company is still dealing with 28 active power outages, about half of what was reported a couple hours ago.
