The Army, a team comprised of former Syracuse basketball players, will play its first game the weekend of July 8 at Philadelphia University. Boeheim's Army competes in the Northeast Region, where it could face two teams of familiar faces and another team that boasts a big man with Orange pedigree. Coached by Ryan Blackwell, team members Eric Devendorf, Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche, James Southerland, C.J. The Bonnies will play Syracuse in the Carrier Dome at Christmas time next season, a team source confirmed over the weekend. The same source had told the Times Herald last month that Bona would turn its attention to scheduling the Orange after an initial agreement with Duke fell through. The news of the Bona-Syracuse matchup was originally reported by News 4 Buffalo’s Shannon Shepherd. The Syracuse game gives the Bonnies their usual road test against a “Power 5” opponent. It won’t, however, be their only game against such a foe in an anticipated 2017-18 season. Bona will play both Maryland and either TCU or New Mexico in the 2017 Emerald Coast Classic, according to multiple media reports. It had been established since the winter that the four teams would headline the prestigious in-season tournament, and now the matchups are set. Coach Mark Schmidt’s team will play the Terrapins, now in the Big 10 Conference, in the opening round and will meet TCU, of the Big 12, or New Mexico in either the championship or consolation game the following day.
