Welcome to June Bug Day!

June Bug Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 7th.

Fittingly, June Bug Day takes place in June. This is the month when June Bugs, a member of the Phyllophaga genus, which consists of over 260 species of New World scarab beetles, tend to be most visibly active. This is because they emerge from the ground this time of year and search for food and a mate. They may have been in the ground as larvae for up to three years. Adults are about an inch or a little less in length, have a hard black or brown casing, as well as wings. During the day they hide in trees, but at night they tend to swarm and are strongly attracted to light. This is also when they do their feeding, which mainly consists of trees and bushes.

TBT field announced; which teams will challenge Boeheim's Army in Northeast? (PS; Ditota)

The Basketball Tournament announced its fieldtoday, making official the participation of Boeheim's Army in the $2 million winner-take-all summer tournament.

The Army, a team comprised of former Syracuse basketball players, will play its first game the weekend of July 8 at Philadelphia University. Boeheim's Army competes in the Northeast Region, where it could face two teams of familiar faces and another team that boasts a big man with Orange pedigree.

Coached by Ryan Blackwell, team members Eric Devendorf, Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche, James Southerland, C.J. Fair, Donte Greene, Rick Jackson and DaShonte Riley are expected to meet in Syracuse for training camp on or near July 1. Then, the team will begin to prepare in earnest for these likely TBT tough outs:

Bonnies to play Syracuse again this winter (oleantimesherald.com; Butler)

The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team might not be playing Duke next season, but it has found another power conference opponent for 2017-18 … and it’s a familiar name.

The Bonnies will play Syracuse in the Carrier Dome at Christmas time next season, a team source confirmed over the weekend. The same source had told the Times Herald last month that Bona would turn its attention to scheduling the Orange after an initial agreement with Duke fell through.

The news of the Bona-Syracuse matchup was originally reported by News 4 Buffalo’s Shannon Shepherd.

The Syracuse game gives the Bonnies their usual road test against a “Power 5” opponent. It won’t, however, be their only game against such a foe in an anticipated 2017-18 season.

Bona will play both Maryland and either TCU or New Mexico in the 2017 Emerald Coast Classic, according to multiple media reports. It had been established since the winter that the four teams would headline the prestigious in-season tournament, and now the matchups are set.

Coach Mark Schmidt’s team will play the Terrapins, now in the Big 10 Conference, in the opening round and will meet TCU, of the Big 12, or New Mexico in either the championship or consolation game the following day. The event will take place Nov. 24-25 in Niceville, Fla. Official tip-off times are yet to be determined.

The 24 players we're most excited to watch as Boeheim's Army plays in TBT (PS)

Greg Oden, Scarlet & Gray

The TBT has had its share of first-round draft picks participate in the event but Greg Oden could be the first-ever No. 1 overall player to compete. Oden had his career sideswiped by repeated knee injuries and recently returned to Ohio State to earn his degree.

He was picked first overall in the 2007 NBA Draft, ahead of Kevin Durant, Al Horford and Mike Conley. He was cut from his team in China last year, although he was averaging a double-double at the time.

ESPN's Jeff Goodman has reported Oden might not play and players often appear on the roster of TBT teams and don't show up. Still, it would be fascinating to see what he's still got left in his basketball tank.

Boeheim's Army wouldn't face Oden until the Final Four or later.

Despite revenue gap, ACC competing nationally like never before (dailypress.com; Teel)

Spring is tax season not only for us working stiffs but also for college athletics. Federal returns for the Power Five conferences are irresistible fodder as media and fans compare revenues and per-school distributions as they would championships and NCAA tournament bids.

It’s an enlightening exercise because, yes, money matters. Major college athletic departments are big businesses with ever-escalating bills, and pity the football program that can’t afford a flat-screen TV at the long snapper’s locker.

But it’s also wise to periodically remind ourselves that sports aren’t Monopoly. Championships aren’t awarded to the richest. They’re earned by athletes and coaches living at the intersection of talent, innovation, motivation, resources and good fortune.

Case in point, the ACC.

Ky Bowman looks to power BC out of the ACC cellar - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

This summer, ACCSports.com is taking a look at some of the best point guards in the ACC in an effort to see if we can determine who will be the league’s top lead guard next season. Last month, we looked into the cases for Bryant Crawford and Bruce Brown. We then checked out pick-and-roll maven Matt Farrell, UNC’s Joel Berry and the under-the-radar Justin Robinson of Virginia Tech. Now, we turn our attention to Ky Bowman of Boston College.

It defies conventional wisdom to think of someone with a shock of red hair going unnoticed. In fact, isn’t the point of that type of hair design meant to stand out? Well, if Ky Bowman’s hairstyle wasn’t enough to draw you in during the 2016-17 season, then hopefully his play stood out.

Bowman was the fifth and final member of the ACC’s All-Freshman team, and he made the case for why he may be the best point guard in the ACC next season. If you’re bullish on the future of Boston College basketball, he a huge reason why.

Where’s the love?
It’s fair to say that Boston College’s basketball program has been a bit sleepy in recent years. The Eagles haven’t participated in the NCAA Tournament since 2009, when Al Skinner was the coach. Jim Christian has won just 29 combined games in his first three seasons. Brighter days may be on the horizon, but it’s hard to argue with the notion that if Bowman played for a more prominent program that he’d receive a larger sample of publicity.

Bowman was scintillating in his debut season. He was one of just three freshmen in Division I basketball last season to score better than 12 points per game and hand out at least two assists while shooting 40-plus percent on three-pointers and 50-plus percent from the field. One of those other plays was T.J. Leaf of UCLA, who projects as a top-25 pick in this year’s NBA Draft.

People finally started to take notice of Bowman’s wild talents after his breakout performance against UNC, when the native of Havelock, N.C., turned Joel Berry into mincemeat.
