Welcome to Don't Step on a Bee Day!

Don’t Step On A Bee Day is an important reminder that the fate of the common bee lies in the balance – with bee numbers in some countries having halved in the last decade with no apparent cause, it’s vital that we take care to maintain bee populations, pollination and honey production.

Syracuse Orange: The impact of Darius Bazley's commitment | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Godnick)

What a week it was for the Syracuse Orange as they made national headlines with a top recruit deciding to take his talents up north to the Carrier Dome. Four-Star recruit Darius Bazley was previously committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes, but a desire to play on a bigger stage steered him towards the Orange.

Bazley was looking at schools such as Florida, Georgetown, and Louisville, but the commitment from the Syracuse program was too much to pass up on for the versatile forward. Bazley is a 2018 recruit, so you won’t be seeing him dominate the ACC next winter, but the wait isn’t long and the excitement for his arrival is just what the Orange need right now.

So, what kind of player is coach Jim Boeheim getting in the 6’9″ forward?

Bazley is going to be a problem in transition as his lanky body will allow him to get easy shots at the rim. Not only will he be able to impact in transition, but his ability to get in the lane in the half court will help him stay on the floor in key situations for Syracuse.

He’s an above average rebounder, so getting easy looks off of misses around the rim will help Bazley show coach Boeheim that he isn’t just a highlight-reel kind of player. His jump shot isn’t broken, but he’ll need to improve the consistency of his long range shot if he wants to have an even bigger impact for the Orange.

In no world would anyone confuse the Gallagher Center with Syracuse’s 35,000-seat Carrier Dome.

But with several of the Orange’s best players in the last decade coming from the City of Brotherly Love — including Rick Jackson, Scoop Jardine, Dion Waiters and Rakeem Christmas, just to name a few — Philadelphia has become a hub for fans of the 'Cuse.

So, it was only fitting that when Boeheim’s Army took the floor for its second-round matchup in The Basketball Tournament, 100-plus Orange fans in attendance at Philadelphia University stood and applauded until Donte Green’s opening basket went down.

Despite a 39-21 run late in regulation from its opposition, No. 3 Boeheim’s Army eked past No. 11 Gaelnation 106-100 in double overtime, moving on to the Super 16 for a third straight year. Donte Green and Eric Devendorf shouldered the offensive load for the Syracuse alumni, combining for 55 points.

And although Neumann-Goretti alum Jardine was absent Sunday, his high school teammate Jackson and Wilmington, Delaware, native Trevor Cooney gave the winners plenty of local flavors.

“(Philly basketball) means toughness,” Jackson said. “I grew up playing in those outside leagues where if you fall, you’re going to be on concrete. That alone will make you a man.

“Being out there falling, you know the refs aren’t calling much because they want to go home so they’re letting guys play, and I think that’s where I get it from.”

Popular Upstate NY swimming hole steps up fines, enforcement due to social media (PS; Axelson)

Some of the most popular natural swimming spots in Upstate New York also happen to be illegal to visit, but this doesn't stop people from jumping in every year.

For park police at Stony Brook State Park in Steuben County, however, things have gotten out of hand. This year, rangers will be stepping up patrols and enforcement, and issuing more fines of up to $250 for people caught wading in prohibited areas of the popular park.

Those areas include the waterfalls along the creek that hugs the gorge trail.

"Social media helps make the problem more popular," Stony Brook Park's manager, Arthur Briley, told WHAM-TV. "People post pictures of them doing illegal activities."

Briley thinks people see those photos, and believe those areas are safe for swimming.

However sharp stones, slick algae on surfaces, rushing water and large crowds all make them dangerous areas, and park police want to curb use of the prohibited areas before a major tragedy happens.

Swimming outside designated areas can also stir up sediment and cause the water to become murky. If that happens, it can force the park to close permitted swimming areas that are fed by the stream, according to the Democrat & Chronicle. This has already happened several times this summer, according to regional director of state parks, Fred Bonn.
