Welcome to Moon Day!
National Moon Day is observed annually on July 20 and commemorates the day man first walked on the moon in 1969. NASA reported the moon landing as being “…the single greatest technological achievement of all time.”
On July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed the first humans, Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on the moon. Armstrong stepped first onto the lunar surface, six hours after landing and spent two and a half hours outside the spacecraft. Aldrin spent slightly less time but together they collected 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted Apollo 11 and remained alone in orbit until Armstrong and Aldrin returned.
Watched by millions, the event was broadcast on live TV to a world-wide audience and all witnessed as Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and described the event as “one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Syracuse Basketball: Top 30 Players in School History (itlh.com; Peelman)
Syracuse Basketball has had a long and rich history full of talent. Some we’ve seen in person, while others were way before our time. Every Sunday, Inside the Loud House will release the Top 50 Players they believe are the best in Syracuse Basketball History. This week we continue the countdown with #30
Syracuse Basketball is a storied program and an NCAA powerhouse. A lot of that has to do with Jim Boeheim’s impact since he became coach in 1976. He turned a good program into a great one, and for that, he is considered one of the all-time greatest coaches.
How much do we really know about Syracuse Basketball’s past though? Do we really know some of Syracuse’s All-Time Greatest Players?
In an effort to gain a deeper respect and knowledge of Syracuse Basketball, Inside the Loud House has done its research and compiled a list of the Top 50 players we believe were the best to ever don an Orange uniform.
Though Boeheim did not coach everyone that is listed in this Top 50 we’ve created, he did coach the majority of them. That just goes to show his ability to bring in and develop boys into men while playing for Syracuse University.
This Top 50 is Inside the Loud House’s best attempt at ranking the Top 50 Basketball players to play for Syracuse University. Some were way before our time, so that does make them hard to rank, but we did our best to rank them based on their stats and what has been written about them. Syracuse commit Marek Dolezaj stands out in FIBA Under-20 Championships (PS; Waters)
Although Slovakia's team struggled during Pool play in the FIBA Under-20 European Championships this week in Romania, Syracuse University commit Marek Dolezaj has stood out.
Dolezaj, a 6-foot-9 forward, will be a freshman at Syracuse this fall, but before coming to Syracuse, he is playing for his country's national team in the U-20 European Championships.
Slovakia is currently 1-3 after wrapping up Pool play with an 86-68 loss to Russia on Wednesday. Slovakia failed to advance to the quarterfinal round and will compete in the tournament's consolation bracket beginning on Friday.
Dolezaj, however, has put up some impressive numbers.
In Slovakia's four games, Dolezaj has averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. In addition to leading Slovakia in scoring, Dolezaj is also his team's leader in steals (1.8) and blocks (1.2). He's second in assists at 2.5 per game.
In Slovakia's loss to Russia on Wednesday, Dolezaj scored 28 points and pulled down five rebounds; both team highs. He hit six of his 14 field goal attempts.
Dolezaj has consistently filled up his line in the box score. In a 74-56 loss to the Netherlands on Tuesday, the 19-year-old had team highs of 22 points, 3 assists, 3 steals and 3 blocks.
Roundball chatter: Rivalry about to heat up again for Syracuse-Georgetown? (espn; Vitale)
Each week, I'll write about the sport I love: college basketball:
- The Syracuse-Georgetown rivalry was the most intense one in the Big East for many years. Two central figures in the rivalry will team up this season. New Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing hired former Orange star Louis Orr to his coaching staff. It was also smart to hire a guy with Division I head coaching experience like Orr. That will help in the transition of head coaching.
- Speaking of coaching staffs, new Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann made a smart move bringing in former Buckeye guard Scoonie Penn to his staff.
- Good news for Longhorn hoop fans. The NCAA concluded Texas signee Mo Bamba did not violate rules.
- I wish Dave Wojcik the best of luck in the future. He resigned as San Jose State coach due to personal reasons. His father passed away in the past year and he decided to concentrate more on family matters.

Watch: Pita Factory near Syracuse can bake 2,000 breads in an hour (PS; Weaver)
Robert Carmi, a financial consultant from Lebanon, returned to Syracuse a few years ago and saw that some people were driving all the way to Canada to buy fresh pita.
Why hadn't someone opened a pita factory in Central New York, he wondered. So, he did.
To prepare, Carmi visited other bakeries in his home country. He learned about recipes and equipment and wheat and flour. He bought a production line from Lebanon, a mixer from Italy and an oven from the United Kingdom. He spent two months trying to find the right flour.
And last November, he and his wife, Diana, opened The Pita Factory in East Syracuse. It's the first flatbread factory in Onondaga County history, according to the Onondaga Historical Association.
"This is my baby," said Carmi of the flatbread factory he opened in an office park on Basile Rowe, near Walmart.
Slowly and quietly, his bread business is starting to grow. Small grocers, including those owned by new immigrants on Syracuse's North Side, are regular customers. Restaurants, such as Sumer in Westvale, use the pita for its wraps. Individual customers can stop buy and pick up fresh breads at the factory on weekdays.
The company makes two main products, white and whole wheat pitas, a thin pocket bread popular in Middle Eastern cuisines. The bread contains flour, yeast and salt; it has no oil or butter.
