Welcome to National Intern Day!

Everyone remembers their first internship. And as the go-to career platform for students and recent grads, we know the importance of internships firsthand. So, we’re partnering with top companies across the country such as American Express, Under Armour, Dell, Unilever and more to recognize the nation’s hardworking interns and celebrate the first-ever National Intern Day on July 27th.

“Interns are vital contributors to the organizations that they work for, so we wanted to create a single day that puts them in the spotlight.” says Liz Wessel, the CEO and co-founder of WayUp. “WayUp has helped millions of people find internships, and we’ve seen firsthand how impactful those work experiences are both for the intern, and for the company that hires them.“

Inside the Playbook: Stop! Hammer Time with Duke basketball - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

The motion offense Duke basketball uses is a thing of beauty. With the right personnel — shooters, ball-movers and screeners — it can be down right deadly, too.

I hope you kids enjoyed the brief summer vacation, because it’s time to hit the books again. And by that, I mean: the playbook. In the latest installment of this series, we look at one of Duke’s best end-of-game sets: the hammer play.

What’s the hammer play?

Well, I’m glad you asked! There are a lot of ways to design this play, but the objective of the play is to hit a shooter in the weak side corner for an open three-pointer.

The player with the basketball — primarily a guard — will dribble towards the baseline; sometimes this initial action comes off a pick-and-roll with one of the post players. As that action takes place, the middle of the floor is occupied by a shooter, who stands at the top of the key.

This is done space the defense (the shooter’s presence occupies a defender) and balance the floor — this is the first player back on defense. That’s important, too, because jumpers from the corner can very easily result in long rebounds.

On the weak side of the floor, one of the team’s wings will cut to the corner as his or her teammates dribbles baseline on the opposite side. This play is designed to get that person open; the primary goal is a catch-and-shoot triple.

The fifth and final player will set what’s called a hammer screen — essentially a back screen to the defender of the player that’s cutting to the opposite corner.

Notes: Star coaches abound in first day of AAU tournaments (nevadapreps.com; Ferguson)

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was in attendance at the Adidas Summer Championships on Wednesday watching Brookwood Elite (Quebec, Canada) and Basketball University (Houston, Texas), which featured two players ranked in the ESPN Top 100 for the class of 2018: Luguentz Dort (No. 24) and Quentin Grimes (No. 29).

Izzo would not say specificially which players he was watching but said he’s excited about the blue-chip talent that has descended upon Las Vegas. Izzo said he’s looking forward to watching as many of the potential recruits as he can but stated that he and his staff have a regret.

“Were working so much we don’t get to enjoy the city,” he said.

Coaches Bill Self, Kansas; Bobby Hurley, Arizona State; Scott Drew, Baylor; and Wayne Tinkle, Oregon State; were also taking in the game, as was Arizona assistant coach Lorenzo Romar.

Paul tops Anthony

The first game of the day at the Las Vegas Classic at Spring Valley was between Team CP3 and Team Melo, sponsored by the NBA stars. Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul’s squad got the better of New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony’s 89-47.

The game featured four players in ESPN’s top 100 list, including Team CP3’s Jaylen Hoard (22), Coby White (26) and Rechon Black (64), and Team Melo’s Noah Locke (80).

“It’s not about each individual kid, it’s about the team and the program and the kids,” said Paul, who was a coach for Team CP3. “We’ve been fortunate to have a bunch of great kids over the years and we’re going to continue to try to build our program.

Coaches turn out

Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Kentucky’s John Calipari, Arizona’s Sean Miller and Villanova’s Jay Wright were among the head coaches in attendance for the first game of the Las Vegas Fab 48 Tip-Off Challenge at Bishop Gorman High.

The game between Team Breakdown (Florida) and Playaz Basketball Club (New Jersey) featured four players in ESPN’s top 100: Jahvon Quinerly (15), Anfernee Simons (21), Elijah Weaver (46) and Jalen Carey (55).

All have yet to make a college selection except Simons, who is committed to Louisville.

Ray Brothers BBQ: The best find in Bouckville (Dining Out Review) (PS; Marmaduke Woodman)

If you've lived in New York for a while, you may think you've had the best cheesecake. But unless you've had the maple bacon cheesecake at Ray Brothers BBQ in Bouckville, you'd be wrong. Top-dressed with candied bacon and maple drizzle, this semi-dry cheesecake is good enough to make someone stuffed with great barbecue want dessert.

But wait. There's more.

We've grilled many things, from salmon and steaks to turkey and turbot and every vegetable we could find. Throw some smoke in and make it barbecue, and things just get better. With the right touch on the tongs, pork, ribs, chicken, and beef all get better.

But meat loaf?

Yes. Now that we've tasted the barbecued meat loaf at Ray Brothers, that seems like a great idea, too.

Sandwiches -- "sandies" on the menu -- range from the $8 sausage with peppers and onions to the $11 Carolina pulled pork. Each comes with one side, while dinners come with two sides and cornbread for prices ranging from $10 for a quarter rack of ribs to $26 for a three-meat platter.

Five meats are available for single choices or combination platters: pulled pork, chicken (after 4 p.m.), ribs, meat loaf, and sausage. There are also specials, including prime rib every Saturday night.
