Welcome to International Beer Day!

International Beer Day (IBD) is a celebration on the first Friday of every August founded in 2007 in Santa Cruz, California.[1][2][3] Since its inception, International Beer Day has grown from a small localized event in the western United States into a worldwide celebration spanning 207 cities, 50 countries and 6 continents.[4] Specifically, International Beer Day has three declared purposes:
  1. To gather with friends and enjoy the taste of beer.
  2. To celebrate those responsible for brewing and serving beer.
  3. To unite the world under the banner of beer, by celebrating the beers of all nations together on a single day.[3]

Four Years In, What Do Syracuse Folk Think Of The ACC? (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

One of our favorite SBN ACC sites is Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician.

John Cassillo has a cool piece up marking Syracuse’s time in the ACClooking at each ACC school Here’s his take on Duke:

“Hate and respect can go hand in hand. I didn’t just want our strongest Big East rivals, Georgetown and UConn, to lose. I wanted them to eat and die. But you guys? I’m not sure how, but I respect the hell out of you for how you’ve adjusted your program on the fly, continue to attract elite recruits and give us an entertaining game nearly every time out. Still hate you, though.”

Dickie Hemric, whose 51-year-old ACC points record was broken by JJ Redick, dies at 83 (newsobservwer.com; Alexander)

The ACC has produced so many basketball stars through the years, but Dickie Hemric could always say he was one of the first.

Hemric, who died Thursday at 83, was the Wake Forest big man in the ACC’s earliest days, in the 1950s, when few players had the bulk and strength to contain the 6-6, 225-pound forward from Jonesville, in Yadkin County.

A double-double was the norm for Hemric. He finished his career at Wake Forest in 1955 as the ACC’s all-time leader in both points (2,587) and rebounds (1,802), and it wasn’t until J.J. Redick was at Duke – and firing up 3-pointers – that Hemric’s points record was topped.

As Redick approached the ACC record in 2006, ESPN and other media outlets duly noted the accomplishments of Hemric, who had been named one of the ACC’s best 50 basketball players during the conference’s 50th anniversary year. He was twice selected the ACC player of the year (1954 and ’55), was the ACC male athlete of the year in 1955 and a two-time All-American.

SummerCuse Day 70: Brew at the Zoo and an animal too (PS; Pucci)

While the zoo is a children's favorite, one of the year's most anticipated events at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is adult-only fun.

Since 1997, Brew at the Zoo and Wine Too has given zoo-goers a chance to browse the animal exhibits without the usual daytime crowds and to sample beers and wines from across the country.

There are 39 beer and wine tasting stations this year, many of which feature Upstate New York breweries such as Middle Ages Brewing Company, Schmaltz Brewing Company and Brewery Ommegang.

To go along with the drinks, 10 food stations will serve variety of local favorites, such as Gianelli sausage, Hofmann hot dogs and Yancey's Fancy cheese.

Forty-nine beer, wine and food stations will be located around the zoo grounds.

Just in case beer, wine, food, live music and zoo animals aren't enough for you, guests can take home a pair of round-trip tickets on JetBlue, a night at the Jefferson Clinton Hotel in Armory Square, autographed local sports memorabilia and even a masterpiece painted by one of the zoo animals during the silent auction.

All proceeds from the evening go toward Friends of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo, a non-profit organization that provides funding for the zoo.

After what's been a mostly dry week for Central New York, a batch of storms is expected to move in from the Great Lakes this evening, so check the weather before you go and bring that umbrella just in case.
