Syracuse basketball confirms home date with Texas Southern (diehards.com; Conroy)

Syracuse and Texas Southern have confirmed the date for their nonconference encounter. The game will be Nov. 18 at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University.

The matchup will be the opening game of the Hoop Hall Miami Invitational. Two other games (Oakland on Nov. 20 and Toledo on Nov. 22) will be played at home before Syracuse faces Kansas in Miami on Dec. 2.

Texas Southern (23-12) won the Southern Athletic Conference automatic NCAA Tournament bid last spring, but the Tigers lost to the eventual national champions, North Carolina, in the first round of the tournament as the No. 16 seed. Texas Southern is coached by former Indiana coach Mike Davis.

The last time these two schools played was two years ago, and the Orange prevailed with an 80-67 win.

Orange Prioritizing Wings Early in ’19 Hoops Recruiting | Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly)

Over the course of the summer, Jim Boeheim and his staff have begun looking ahead to 2019, with offers going out to a number of talented prospects. While there have been some offers extended to post players, like Aidan Igiehon, Kofi Cockburn, and most recently Jon Bol Ajak, it’s also become pretty clear that the main focus for the class could wind up being the wing positions.

Syracuse is hoping to lock up an elite point guard in the 2018 cycle, preferably Jalen Carey, who would then join Frank Howard and Howard Washington on next year’s roster. After that, with Washington and Carey (or another point guard) in the mix, there’s no pressing need at that position in 2019, despite the fact that Syracuse will no doubt continue to pursue combo guard Jalen Lecque. It’s important to note, as well, that Lecque was originally a member of the class of 2018 and could become the primary point guard target for this year’s class if the Orange miss out on Carey… assuming he’d be willing to reclassify back into his original class.

Meanwhile, on the interior the Orange have a plethora of young talent, with both Marek Dolezaj (who arrived in Syracuse this weekend) and Oshae Brissett, along with Matt Moyer, giving Boeheim the ability to be pretty flexible at the two forward positions. Bourama Sidibe provides a big, athletic body down low, though right now things appear to be a bit up in the air with Taurean Thompson’s future at Syracuse.

Developer: Student housing project that forced Chuck’s off South Crouse Avenue remains on track (DO; Ogozalek)

A multimillion dollar student housing project that forced the popular bar Hungry Chuck’s to temporarily close earlier this year remains on track, a developer said.

“I’m not worried at all,” said Jared Hutter, an owner of Syracuse 727 LLC, a real estate development company. Syracuse head basketball coach Jim Boeheim is a partner in Syracuse 727 LLC, Hutter said.

Chuck’s and several other businesses along South Crouse Avenue, including the Orange Crate Brewing Co. bar, were demolished in May to make room for Syracuse 727 LLC’s new eight-story luxury student apartment building called The Marshall.

In an interview with The Daily Orange, Hutter confirmed that Chuck’s will not be a tenant at The Marshall. Steve Theobald, owner of Chuck’s, originally planned to move into the new building.

Jerry Dellas, president of the Crouse Marshall Business Improvement District, said he heard Theobald is still looking to a rent a spot for Chuck’s either on the Hill or farther off campus. Theobald did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
