Welcome to Chop Suey Day!

This is a day for the American Chinese dish, chop suey. It usually consists of a meat—such as pork, beef, shrimp, chicken, or fish—and eggs, which are quickly cooked in a sauce with vegetables like cabbage, celery, and bean sprouts. It is usually served with rice, but stir-fried noodles may be added. In Cantonese, a Chinese language, its name literally means "odds and ends". There are so many conflicting stories of its origin, that no one really knows where it came from. Most believe it was invented by Chinese Americans. Some say it was made by those working on the transcontinental railroad, or for miners by a Chinese cook in San Francisco. Some claim it was made by the chef of a Chinese official who was visiting the United States in 1896, or that the official wandered into a Chinese restaurant and the chef there came up with it for him using leftovers. A few have also claimed that it is based off a dish from Taishan, a Chinese county in Guangdong province. No matter where it got its start, it is now a prominent food in American Chinese cuisine.

The Orange's season may have just taken a huge hit (D&C; DiVeronica)

The outlook for the 2017-18 Syracuse University basketball season just took a huge hit.

Sophomore forward/center Taurean Thompson, 20, has withdrawn from SU, according to head coach Jim Boeheim, and it appears unlikely he'll suit up for Syracuse this season or ever again.

"We have been informed that Taurean is taking a leave of absence from Syracuse University. My understanding is he wants to go to school closer to home due to some family health issues,” Boeheim said Monday in a statement.

That leaves the Orange with only two players who have started for them, sophomore shooting guard Tyus Battle, and junior point guard Frank Howard, who lost his starting job midway through last season. Paschal Chukwu, a 7-foot-2 center and transfer from Providence who missed most of last season with an eye injury, is also expected back along with redshirt freshman forward, Matthew Moyer.

Our sixth food: The deep-fried Nutella sandwich

It took until Day 6 for our first taste of fresh fruit, but don't worry, any potential health benefits are canceled out many times over by the glazed donut, chocolate syrup and oozing Nutella that make up the aptly-named deep-fried Nutella sandwich.

The focus of this sweet treat is of course, the Nutella. In what was nothing short of a genius feat of engineering, the Nutella did not leak from its warm, crispy cocoon. I suspect the Nutella is spread into sheets, frozen and cut into portions before being battered and fried. Whatever the technique, it's masterful.
