Welcome to Eat a Hoagie Day!

The grinder, the sub and the hero, the po’boy and the Italian sandwich along with the torpedo are all recognized on National Eat a Hoagie Day on September 14.

The hoagie consists of meats, cheeses, vegetables, sauces and seasonings on a long roll of Italian or French bread. The origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of mystery.

The origin of this giant sandwich is a bit of mystery. The epicenter of the controversy seems to be eastern Pennsylvania where the DiCostanzas and DePalmas lay claim to being the first to make the hoagie. One family claims to have been making the sandwich since 1923 and the other since 1925. But who has the proof?

Another story from the Philadelphia area during World War I describes large Italian sandwiches shipyard workers would bring to work wrapped in newspaper to help them get through their long days. The massive sandwiches were nicknamed “hoggies” because anyone eating them at one sitting would have to be a hog. The transformation of the word to “hoagie” is explained by the Philadelphia accent which often exaggerates vowel sounds.

Syracuse adds 3-star Class of 2019 guard Brycen Goodine (DO; DiSturco, Fortier)

Three-star shooting guard Brycen Goodine committed to Syracuse on Wednesday night, he announced on Twitter.

“I went to the school and just fell in love with it,” Goodine told the Daily Orange. “It was awesome. I could just tell that it’s a family up there and I wanted to be a part of it.”

The Class of 2019 recruit chose the Orange after a short, heavy recruiting period this summer, Goodine said. He picked SU over Boston College, reportedly his only other offer. 247Sports.com reported that Goodine received interest from Connecticut, Florida and California, among others.

The 6-foot-4, 170-pound guard from St. Andrews (Rhode Island) School is ranked the 30th shooting guard in the 2019 class and second-best player out of Massachusetts, per 247Sports. Goodine is the SU’s first commitment in Jim Boeheim’s 2019 class.

Syracuse first saw Goodine at Nike EYBL Peach Jam, where he averaged 4.6 points per game on 25 percent shooting from the field. The Orange’s assistant coach Gerry McNamara attended every game the high school junior played in, Goodine said, but that he didn’t introduce himself until soon after in Florida.

ACC Preview #6 - Clemson (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Clemson basketball is usually pretty straightforward. A coach is hired who follows one or two basic templates: Clif Ellis or Bill Foster.

The Ellis’s tend to recruit well and not be as solid on the x-and-o stuff; the Fosters are more or less the opposite.

Hire them, hope the football team does well and fire them in 4-5 years.

Repeat.

Brad Brownell is a really good coach but Clemson is a tough job for anyone. He has recruited reasonably well and has generally won, but even so, he was on the hot seat last spring.

How hot?

Clemson was reportedly prepared to fire Brownell and hire alum Will Wade away from VCU where he had made a quick and solid impression. He ended up at LSU of course, a school with much more basketball tradition.

He would have solved Clemson’s biggest dissatisfaction with Brownell, which is criticism for a defense-first style that many find boring. Wade likes a faster game.
