Welcome to National Felt Hat Day!

This day is dedicated to felt hats. Felt made from wool is the world's oldest textile, and felt can also be made from the furs of rabbits and beavers. To create felt, pressure is applied to the wool or fur, as well as moisture and heat, which causes the fibers of the materials to interlock. There are many types of felt hats:
  • Ascot cap- hard felt; similar to flat cap
  • Beret- usually of woollen felt; soft and round cap; traditionally associated with the French, Basque people, and the military
  • Bicorne- broad brimmed with brim folded up and pinned in front and back; worn by European military officers in 1790's; associated with Napoleon
  • Bowler- hard felt; created around 1850 in London; also known as Derby hat in the United States; worn by Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy
  • Fedora- soft felt; medium brim; lengthwise crease in crown; associated with gangsters and Prohibition; worn by Frank Sinatra
  • Fez- red felt; cone shaped; many times has a tassel; popular in Arab-speaking countries
  • Kolah namadi- worn by men in rural areas of Iran
  • Porkpie- low flat crown and narrow brim; worn by Buster Keaton and by Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad
  • Slouch- worn by military leaders; less fancy versions are called bush hats
  • Sombrero- Mexican hat; cone-like crown and wide brim
  • Top hat- versions such as beaver hat, magician's hat, or top hat; tall, flat-crowned, and cylindrical; popularly worn by men in the 19th and early 20th centuries; worn by Abraham Lincoln and Uncle Sam
  • Trilby- soft felt; deeply indented crown; narrow brim often upturned in back
  • Tyrolean hat- originated in Alps; has corded band with feather
  • Western- can be made of felt or many other materials; wide brimmed; brim usually turned up at sides

Syracuse Basketball Recruiting: Orange snag explosive Brycen Goodine (itlh.com; Carey)

When it rains it pours for the Syracuse basketball program. They’re hoping their new toy in 2019 could start a domino effect. ITLH breaks it down

Late Wednesday night the Syracuse basketball program got some good news with the commitment of Brycen Goodine. Goodine announced his decision via twitter.

Goodine is a 6-foot 5 inch shooting guard that attends the St. Andrew’s school in Providence, Rhode Island. That same school has produced the likes of former Orange stars Michael Carter-Williams and Demetris Nichols.

According to 247 sports, Goodine is a three star prospect and the 189th best player in the country. The Massachusetts native also received interest from the likes of Florida, UConn, Miami, and Pittsburgh. Goodine would likely be a much more highly rated prospect if it had not been for a torn MCL and partially torn ACL over the summer of 2015. This forced the junior to miss some of this past season, keeping his recruiting ranking down.

However, Goodine’s measurables are ideal for a shooting guard in Syracuse’s vaunted 2-3 zone defense. When watching his highlights it’s clear that the shooting guard has tremendous athleticism and a good looking jump shot.

Gerry McNamara handled the recruiting duties for Brycen, who visited Syracuse back in August and participated in Jim Boeheim’s elite camp. Kudos to McNamara and staff for getting on Goodine quickly before he will likely blow up and become one of the top recruits in the Northeast.

Comedian Dan Frigolette comes home to Syracuse on Saturday (PS; Poorman)

It is common in the stand-up comedy world, in an effort to soothe a performer's nerves, to offer this advice: "Just imagine everyone is naked." On his debut album, comedian Dan Frigolette, 34, didn't have to imagine anything.

The album, released last month, is called "Naked and Amused," and it was recorded before an audience of nudists in St. Louis, MO, during Frigolette's recent 90-day of the Midwest. Frigolette, a Baldwinsville native, said it was the perfect environment for his brand of comedy. He called these nudists an "untapped market."

What Frigolette said he learned during the recording of "Naked and Amused" was that being naked in large groups makes most people more receptive to their surroundings.

"There's something about when a bunch of people get together and get naked, that the small talk kind of goes away, and the talk is more substantial," Frigolette said. "There's different shapes here and there, but when everybody's naked, you kind of see that we're all separated by very little."

Frigolette is currently touring the country on his annual Comedy's Best Kept Secret Tour, which raises money for the Liberty Humane Society. He will perform at Byblos Bar & Grill in Syracuse on Saturday, September 16, where tickets are $10 and include a free copy of "Naked and Amused."

Geno Thorpe, Syracuse: Jim Boeheim needed another offensive threat to go alongside Tyus Battle; Thorpe was brought to Onondaga County to provide just that. Like John Gillon and Andrew White, Thorpe is a grad transfer (South Florida) who arrives at Syracuse needing to put the ball in the basket. The 6-4 combo guard averaged 15.1 points last season.

Also in that article of interest:

Kaleb Joseph, Creighton: How will Greg McDermott replace Maurice Watson at point guard? With this guy. After starting for long periods during his time at Syracuse, Joseph is the next Power Five transfer headed to Omaha in hopes of reigniting his career. Make no mistake about it: Joseph is the X-Factor for Creighton during the 2017-18 season.

I'll be interested to see how Kaleb does. I still have a ton of respect for how he handled his sophomore year. Couldn't have been easy going from start to barely playing he was still a team guy.

Way to go, Katie Kolinski! She was the leading scorer in a game full of accomplished male players! (Anyone who knows Katie, knows how hard she works at everything she does).
My girlfriend and I are always looking for Katie on the sidelines! (GF went to high School with her). Good stuffSUball
