SU Basketball Recruiting: Clearer skies appear ahead (itlh.com; Adler)

A slice of juicy news on the recruiting trail, as the Syracuse basketball program picks up another pledge, this time in the 2019 class. ITLH breaks it all down.
The Syracuse basketball squad is on a recruiting roll.

Just days after Buddy Boeheim said he would suit up for his father in a year, the Orange has secured the first commitment in its 2019 class.

Brycen Goodine, a three-star shooting guard from the St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, R.I., revealed on Twitter that he will don a ‘Cuse uniform beginning in 2019-20.

The 6-4 Goodine, currently a high-school junior, hails from New Bedford, Mass. At the moment, he’s not listed among the top-100 players in his class.

Overall, Goodine checks in at 131st via https://n./content/prospects/2019/brycen-goodine-181599, and 183rd at 247Sports.

However, from what I’ve read online, he has a sweet shooting stroke and is tremendously athletic. It’s possible – and even probable – that his rankings will significantly improve in the future.

SU head coach Jim Boeheim and his assistants got in early with Goodine, before his national
stature could skyrocket. This has happened before to guys on our roster, and it will occur again.

So, for those Syracuse fans out there who want to complain that we don’t get the best of the best, I urge you to hold off. Goodine, I believe, has some serious skills.

What’s more, several media reports note that a handful of heavyweight schools have shown interest in him, including Connecticut, Miami, UCLA and Villanova.

A look at the versatility for the Syracuse Orange | isportsweb (sportsweb.com; Godnick)

Last year the Syracuse Orange were known for their depth; they didn’t use it that much towards the end of the year, but coach Jim Boeheim could have gone seven to nine deep if he really needed to.

This year the team will be making their name known with a different unique tactic: their versatility. Versatility can be looked at in many different ways, but the versatility on this year’s team will provide the Orange with players who can be slotted into multiple positions. From guards who can play like small forwards, to wing players who can play both the top and bottom of the zone, coach Boeheim is going to have a lot of fun coaching this team this year.

It all starts with the lanky wings in O’Shae Brissett and Matthew Moyer. Both players have yet to play a real collegiate game yet, but there is one thing for sure about both players: they can impact the game in multiple ways. Brissett’s athleticism will allow him to play in transition with or without the ball, allowing it to be easier to score on the fast break. Moyer brings less athleticism to the table, but a skill set that allows him to dominate both on and off the ball.

Tropical Storm Jose path shifts toward Northeast; impact on Upstate NY unclear (PS; Montreuil)

The weather across Central New York this week will continue to be sunny and warmer than normal as high pressure spends most of the week overhead.

Monday will pick up where the weekend left off, with a mix of sun and fair weather clouds during the afternoon. Temperatures will rise into the low and even mid 80s once again.

There may be just enough heat and humidity to support one or two isolated afternoon showers on Monday, but the vast majority of the region will not see any precipitation.

On Tuesday, a subtle front will slip through Central New York. Again, an isolated shower may pop up, but they will be few and far between.

High temperatures on Tuesday will be around 80 degrees as the front moves through.
Later Tuesday afternoon, some high clouds on the fringe of what is currently Hurricane Jose will make their way into Central New York. These will probably not be thick enough to even completely block the sun.

These clouds may persist through much of Wednesday but they should be the only impact Central New York sees from Jose. No rain is expected.
