Welcome to National Comic Book Day!

Today is a day to celebrate the popular entertainment and collector's item, the comic book. The first American comic book is seen as being Famous Funnies, which was released in 1933, although many books and comics predated it and helped lead to its creation. For example, an 1842 hardcover book titled The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck was made up of comics. In the early 20th century periodicals that contained comics were printed in the United States. American comic books are divided into different eras. In 1938, the release of Superman launched the Golden Age of comic books. Superhero comics were introduced and very popular for most of this era. The Silver Age is seen as beginning with the introduction of Flash in 1956, which led to a rejuvenation in superhero comic books. The Fantastic Four and Spider-Man came about during this era, and the era lasted until sometime in the early 1970's, when the Bronze Age began, which lasted until the mid-1980's. From the end of the Bronze Age until the present day is known as the Modern Age. Non-mainstream comic books such as underground comix sprang up in the 1960's, followed by alternative comics in the 1980's. Comic book stores became popular in the 1970's, and comic book conventions are another way that collectors and comic book fans have connected and enjoyed their hobby.

Syracuse Basketball: Carmelo Anthony & Jerami Grant Will Strive Together (itlh.com; Weisleder)

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnaroski reported that the New York Knicks have sent former Syracuse basketball stud Carmelo Anthony to the Oklahoma City Thunder

Although Carmelo Anthony and Jerami Grants’ impacts at the NBA level have been far from similar, their individual dominance at Syracuse was quite similar.

In his lone year with the Orange, Anthony posted video game numbers: 22 points per game, 10 rebounds, and two assists. Anthony also led Syracuse to their lone National Championship Title.

Similar to Anthony, Grant posted a very balanced stat line over two years with the Orange: 7.5 points, nearly five rebounds, one assist, and just under 50% shooting per game.

Although Anthony’s NBA career has seen him assume No. 1 scoring option responsibilities while Grant has been nothing short of a role player, the two will mesh perfectly together in OKC.

Both Grant and Anthony stand at 6-8 and have both proven themselves worthy NBA talents, regardless of their individual abilities.

The Oklahoma City Thunder now boasts a big three of Melo, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook. Despite that, players like Grant proved their worth these past playoffs that even in limited action, they can make a huge impact.

PudnerSports.com: ACC: Duke Joins Louisville as National Contender with Bagley Signing (pudnersports.com; Pudner)

ACC: Duke Joins Louisville as National Contender with Bagley Signing

Marvin Bagley's late signing makes Duke a national contender with five of the top 60 players in the country, and gives the ACC three of the top 10 players. Bagley may be the best NBA player in this draft, but he ranks behind projected 1st team All-Americans in Notre Dame's Bonzie Colson (projected national Player of the Year) and Ben Lammers, who reportedly chose Georgia Tech after seeing the engineering department's 3D printer.

Value Add projects the first 14 players listed below as Top 100 players, with Deng Adel of Louisville ranked 106th of 4,000.

Here is where Value Add ranks each Atlantic Coast Conference team for the season, and the Massey Rankings rank the football teams against all other schools. And yes, Clemson's football team will try to give the ACC another football-basketball double championship.

Updates will be provided here.

Hot in Central New York for a few more days, then a big change (PS; Coin)

Syracuse- Central New York will continue to bake under near record heat for a few more days before a sudden and abrupt change to more seasonable weather.

High pressure will remain parked over the region for early this week. Heat and humidity will continue to be pumped north into Central New York.

Skies will be sunny much of the time, with just some passing high, thin clouds and perhaps a fair weather cloud or two.

Areas of morning fog will be possible, but with morning lows generally in the 60s, the fog will not be as widespread or thick as it was last week when it was a bit cooler.

Temperatures Monday and Tuesday will be very hot, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. With dewpoints in the 60s, the heat index should feel like the low 90s.

The record high for Syracuse on Monday stands at 91 degrees, set in 2007, which may be difficult to beat. Tuesday's record high is very attainable though. Set in 1934, that record is just 88 degrees.
