Welcome to Ada Lovelace Day!

Ada Lovelace Day was created to celebrate one of the first computer programmers. As the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, Augusta Ada Byron, was brought up by her mother, Annabella, after he passed. Her mother feared that she would inherit her father’s poetic temperament, and gave Ada a strict upbringing of logic, science and mathematics. Ada became fascinated with mechanisms and designed steam flying machines, poring over the scientific magazines of the time and embracing the British Industrial revolution.

In 1833, Ada Lovelace was introduced to Charles Babbage whom she helped to develop a device called The Analytical Engine; an early predecessor of the modern computer. Lovelace and Babbage worked together closely for many years in order to refine the Engine. Ada found relative fame in 1842 when she expanded on an article by an Italian mathematician, in which she elaborated on the use of machines through the manipulation of symbols. Although Babbage had sketched out programs before, Lovelace’s were the most elaborate and complete, and the first to be published; so she is often referred to as “the first computer programmer”.

ACC Preview #11 - Syracuse (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

A couple of years ago people were talking about the ACC with its four Hall of Fame coaches. Today though things are a bit different.

Rick Pitino was just forced out at Louisville following the Adidas/recruiting scandal - his third major scandal since 2009 (the Karen Sypher extortion scandal was in 2009 and the hooker/recruiting scandal in 2015).

Roy Williams, though not thought to be personally responsible for UNC’s scandal, is nonetheless the head coach and responsible for what happens in his program. The NCAA hammer is looming for UNC and we’ll see how things shake out for Williams and his reputation.

Jim Boeheim had 101 wins stripped from his record and was required to sit out nine games by the NCAA. He was also put on a three-year retirement plan by Syracuse and was supposed to be out in 2018.

That was then, this is now.

A.D. Mark Coyle is gone. Coach-in-waiting Mike Hopkins took the Washington job, so he’s gone too. After he did, new A.D. John Widhack extended Boeheim’s contract. And not too long ago, son Buddy (2018) committed to play for Syracuse, so you can expect Boeheim to be around for a while longer.

Vote for the name of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo's new baby patas monkey (PS)

Thickburger?

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo's new baby patas monkey was born on September 16 to mother monkey Becca and sire MJ. The zoo asked the public for name suggestions before determining the baby monkey's gender and received over 250 suggestions, most of them gender-neutral.

Zookeepers have since determined that the baby monkey is a female. Meanwhile, the zoo's primate team picked their top choices from the suggested names for a final vote.

The finalists are:

Zuri -- Swahili for "beautiful."

Rogi -- first two letters of "Rosamond" and "Gifford."

Kasi -- "Speed" in Swahili. Patas monkeys are the world's fastest primates.

Pitter -- as in "Pitter patas."

Bella -- "Beauty" from Beauty and the Beast, similar to mom's name, Becca.

The public is invited to participate in the final vote here.

Voting will be open until noon on Friday, October 13. The zoo will announce the winning name on Monday, October 16. The person/s who suggested the winning name will win a free Family 4-pack of day passes to the zoo as well as bragging rights.

The baby monkey remains on exhibit with its parents and extended patas family in the zoo's Social Animals building.
