Medical-Assistants-Recognition-Day-Wednesday-of-Third-Full-Week-in-October.jpg

Welcome to Medical Assistant's Recognition Day!

Medical Assistants Recognition Day is observed on Wednesday of the third full week in October. One of the fastest-growing careers in the nation, medical assistants make medical offices run more smoothly and instrumental to overall quality patient care.

Medical assistants are health professionals who support the work of physicians and other health professionals, usually in a clinic setting. Their responsibilities can include both administrative and clinical duties. Depending on the type and size of the facility, what state, certifications available and the laws affected by where they work, medical assistants can play a variety of roles.

Class of 2018 guard Brendan Paul commits to Syracuse as preferred walk-on (DO; DiSturco)

Class of 2018 guard Brendan Paul committed to Syracuse Tuesday afternoon, he announced on Twitter. He will join the Orange as a preferred walk-on.

Blessed to say that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Syracuse University #GoOrange #BenchMob #TowelGangpic.twitter.com/G6nqX30pn2

— Brendan Paul (@_brendanpaul_) October 17, 2017

Paul checks in at 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, he said and is in the middle of his fifth year of high school and first at Brewster (New Hampshire) Academy, where he currently rooms with Syracuse commit Buddy Boeheim. He took the extra year, he said, because coaches recommended he get bigger, stronger and faster before making a college decision.

Boeheim told his dad, current SU head coach Jim Boeheim, about Paul and his love for Syracuse. Having already handed out all the scholarships set aside for guards, Paul was offered a preferred walk-on spot, he said.

“I came here over break and have been staying here,” Paul said. “… I decided yesterday that I’d be coming to ‘Cuse for the next four years.”

Before his first year at Brewster, Paul had received Division II and Division III offers and looks from low- and mid-major schools. He attended Hawken (Ohio) School for the four years prior.

Saratoga, Shen, Shaker grads on Syracuse cheer team (saratogian.com; Staff)

Three graduates of rival Suburban Council schools have traded in their blue and green high school colors for the distinct orange of Syracuse University.

Saratoga Springs class of 2017 grad Madison Dallas, Shenendehowa class of 2017 grad Brenna Hart and Shaker class of 2016 grad Caitlyn Harley are all members of the Syracuse University Coed Cheer Team. The trio cheer for the Orange during football and men’s basketball seasons after successful tryouts for the team held in May 2017. This is Harley’s second season on the squad and the first for Dallas and Hart. All three girls cheered for their respective high school during their time in the Capital District while Dallas and Hart also cheered for the private cheer gym Cheer Intensity out of Green Island.

In addition to cheer responsibilities during Syracuse football and men’s basketball seasons, the Cheer Team also gets the opportunity to appear at special events. The squad were part of the opening ceremonies at the New York State Fair this past summer and even performed on stage with the Beach Boys. Also, Syracuse cheer was invited to be part of the ESPN College Football Game Day telecast from Times Square on September 23. Dallas, Hart and Harley were recently chosen to be members of the 16 person squad that will represent Syracuse University at the UCA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championships held in Orlando, Florida on Jan. 12-14, 2018.

The team will be back on the sidelines when Syracuse travels to take on the University of Miami at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPN.

DOSS HIRED AS NEW VOICE OF CSUB MEN'S BASKETBALL - Learfield (learfield.com; Duncan)

In partnership with Learfield, CSU Bakersfield is pleased to announce the new voice of Roadrunner men’s basketball. Jon Doss will put on the headset and provide the play-by-play action from courtside of every CSUB men’s basketball game, home and away, this season.

“I could not be more excited for the opportunity to work with Coach Barnes, his staff, team, and the CSUB community as a whole. The `Runners have proven themselves one of the up-and-coming programs in the country, and I consider myself quite lucky for the chance to tell the next chapter of their story.”

A native of Modesto, Calif., Doss started his broadcasting career as the flagship voice for California women’s basketball in 2007, including their run to the school’s first-ever appearance in the women’s NCAA Sweet 16. During the next few years, Doss called games for Golden Bears football, baseball, and men’s hoops, including the Cal men’s last Pac-10 championship season in 2010.

Following his time in Berkeley, Doss traveled east, where he earned his master’s degree in broadcast and digital journalism from Syracuse. For the four years that followed, he transitioned to television, reporting and anchoring at 13WHAM, the ABC-affiliate in Rochester, N.Y., where he covered – among other things – Syracuse men’s basketball, including their run to the 2012 Final Four in Atlanta.

What Duke, UNC and NCSU basketball programs are doing in wake of FBI investigation (newsobserver.com; Alexander)

The FBI’s investigation into bribery, fraud and corruption in college basketball has had a ripple effect in college compliance offices.

In wake of the FBI probe into two college basketball schemes and charges levied, several schools have conducted internal reviews of their compliance operations, including North Carolina, N.C. State and Duke.

The Associated Press reported Monday it has asked 84 schools with major basketball programs how they responded to the FBI investigation that resulted in the arrests of 10. The AP said 64 schools responded and 28 reported they were conducting the internal compliance reviews.

“Since news of the FBI’s investigation, we are doing many of the same things we suspect most universities are, including talking directly to our coaches and staff,” UNC spokesman Steve Kirschner said Tuesday. “Our Director of Athletics (Bubba Cunningham) and our sport administrators are in constant contact with our coaches across all sports, and we also have coaches meetings every month where we talk about compliance and rules. We are discussing, and will continue to discuss, this topic with our coaches and staff.”

Hopkins brings new defense, culture to Washington (therepublic.com; Hoehn)

First-year Washington men’s basketball coach Mike Hopkins hopes to install more than the trademark zone defense he learned during his long tenure as an assistant at Syracuse.

Hopkins, who worked at Syracuse for 22 years under Jim Boeheim, succeeds Lorenzo Romar, who was fired after 15 seasons. Despite having Markelle Fultz, the one-and-done guard who became the No. 1-overall pick in the NBA draft, the Huskies finished 9-22 and closed with a school-record 13 consecutive losses en route to an 11th-place finish in the Pac-12 last year.

“Whatever happened last year, is last year,” Hopkins said Tuesday at the team’s media day. “We’re looking forward. We’re always moving forward. One of our things, and I keep going back to our culture, but it doesn’t matter, get better. It doesn’t matter, get better. I stay away from the past. I focus on the future.”

Adapting to the 2-3 zone defense has been a challenge, especially for returning players, Hopkins said.

“Everybody here is learning a new system,” Hopkins said. “A lot of the players, they end up being freshmen again because they’re learning from our zone to our press to how we’re going to play offensively, defensively. I think they’ve made the transition pretty smooth.”

The Huskies return three starters, junior point guard David Crisp (13.8 points per game), junior forward Noah Dickerson (12.5 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds), and junior guard Matisse Thybulle (10.5 points).

Here's what Syracuse airport will look like after $49M renovation (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

A $48.8 million redesign and reconstruction of the terminal building at Syracuse Hancock International Airport will give travelers a more modern and spacious airport.

New renderings released Tuesday at a groundbreaking for the project show:

  • A terminal with 25,000 square feet of new glass.
  • A 650-foot-long canopy with LED lights to protect cars and passengers from the elements during arrival and departure.
  • Two glass pedestrian bridges above the passenger drop-off area to provide passengers using mobile airline tickets a more efficient route, connecting them directly to flights by skipping the ticketing lines.
  • An exterior featuring perforated steel panels to withstand inclement weather, energy efficient windows and a rainwater collection system.
  • Energy efficient lighting throughout the terminal and rooftop solar arrays.
The new terminal will also include better food, beverage and retail options, e-ticketing, and upgraded ticketing counters and baggage claim areas.

In addition, a regional aviation history museum, designed with assistance from the Onondaga Historical Association, will be located in the transit center.

The project includes the removal of the existing overhead precast concrete drive-thru canopy along the front of the terminal, opening the space for natural light. Nearly 5,000 tons of material is being moved from the site.
