Welcome to American Beer Day!

There are more than 2,100 breweries that manufacture beer in the United States. They range in size from industry giants to brewpubs and microbreweries.
  • The U.S. produced 196 million barrels of beer in 2009.
  • The U.S. consumes roughly 20 US gallons of beer per capita annually.
  • In 2008, the United States was ranked sixteenth in the world in per capita consumption, while total consumption was second only to China.
  • Prohibition in the early twentieth century caused nearly all American breweries to close.
  • After prohibition was repealed the industry had consolidated into a small number of large-scale breweries.
  • The majority of the new breweries in the U.S. are small breweries and brewpubs, who, as members of the Brewers Association, are termed “craft breweries” to differentiate them from the larger and older breweries.
  • The most common style of beer produced by the big breweries is American lager.
  • Most of the smaller breweries, which were founded in the 1980s, produce a range of styles.

For Syracuse basketball, I'd be happy if… - The Juice Online (the juice; Goodman)

I’ve decided to save myself the embarrassment of making predictions for the Syracuse basketball team this season. Much like Frank Howard last year, I miss more than I connect, including being fooled by Tyler Roberson’s potential twice. Clearly telling you what is going to happen is not my strong suit. Instead, I’d be happy if…

Tyus Battle scores 18 points and grabs five rebounds per game.

We all know this is going to be a big year for Mr. Battle. We expect him to lead the Orange attack and doing so successfully would require an output of around 18 points per game. The loss of Taurean Thompson has put more scoring on his capable shoulders. It also left a glaring rebounding hole, and the guards are going to need to help hit the boards. I expect Battle to have moments playing down in the zone as well, which should help add to his totals.

Geno Thorpe puts up 10 points and five assists per game.

Those were another grad student’s numbers a season ago, and it may not be fair to expect Thorpe to match the output of John Gillon. But, considering he scored 15.1ppg against lesser opponents and dished out 4.6apg to inferior teammates, 10 and 5 may not be so unfathomable. Assuming the ankle heals as expected, we know he’s going to get the minutes, but a lot of his success will depend on whether or not…

Instant Juice: Syracuse picked 10th in the ACC - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

A quick take on Syracuse’s pre-season prediction at the annual ACC Operation Basketball event held in Charlotte Wednesday, and released Thursday afternoon:

WHAT HAPPENED: In a vote of the media members attending the event, SU was picked 10th with 420 points, its lowest preseason ranking since joining the conference for the 2013-14 season. No Orange players were selected to the all-conference first, second or third teams, while freshman forward Oshae Brissett received one vote for ACC Rookie of the Year. Duke, as expected, was voted as the top preseason team, followed by North Carolina, Notre Dame, Miami, and Louisville. Big man Bonzie Colson of the Irish was named preseason player of the year.

ANALYSIS: While it’s unusual to see a Jim Boeheim-coached team this far down the pecking order, with only two returning players that saw significant playing time last season, Tyus Battle and Frank Howard, it’s not surprising that the media has taken a wait and see approach concerning SU. The ‘Cuse will be counting on five newcomers to the program, plus big man Paschal Chukwu who only played in seven games last year before an eye injury ended his season.

Ashley Hoffman and Peter Corasaniti's Wedding Website (thknot.com)

Pete and Ashley met when he was a graduate assistant for Syracuse Basketball and Ashley had been hired as an office assistant. They had always been friends since they began working together, but little did she know Pete had a different type of relationship in mind. Unbeknownst to Ashley the staff in the office all knew and continued to try and coach Peter into asking Ashley out, it was the talk of the office (whenever Ashley wasn't around). Pete had his own plan and reassured them all he had it handled.

One day Pete asked Ashley if she would meet him for happy hour after work. When she got there and realized it was just Pete there waiting for her she was pleasantly surprised. Despite all the signs being there, this was when she realized their relationship had potential to be something more than friendship. That turned out to be their first date. Ashley had convinced Pete to come hiking with her the next day and they spent hours walking in the woods and getting to know each other better. Every time they saw each other after that they always had so much fun together, and quickly realized their connection was something special.

ACC preseason media basketball poll is out. How did Duke, UNC and NC State fare? (newsobserver.com; Alexander)

Armory Square's Tallman Block joins downtown Syracuse apartment trend (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

Work is underway to transform the long-vacant upper floors of the historic Tallman Block building in Syracuse's Armory Square into apartments.

Owners Michael Wicker, James Leana and Donald McMasters are turning the top two floors of the 146-year-old building into 16 one-bedroom apartments.

Work started on the $3.1 million project in April and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Designed by famed Syracuse architect Archimedes Russell, the Tallman Block building opened in 1871 as a mixed-use commercial building on three parcels known then as 225 W. Fayette St. but today as 215 W. Fayette St.

It was built for owner Charles Tallman, the founding president of the nearby Syracuse and Geddes Railroad, and fronts both West Fayette and Walton streets. Henry Frank Leather Co. occupied the first floor from 1960 until 1991.

The building originally had a four-story wing on West Fayette Street containing three retail storefronts and an entrance to a hotel that operated on floors 2 through 4. The fourth floor and an Italainate metal cornice that crowned it were removed in the 1930s due to disrepair.

not loving that downward ranking trend. spells trouble as a power program.

Agreed.
And add to that our subtle change in recruiting philosophy where we seemed to target OAD’s instead of “program guys”. Also, we’ve had guys leave early as 1st rounders every year, and let’s not kid ourselves that sanctions haven’t had an effect. Every program experiences a down turn. We’re just not used to it at the Cuse.
