Welcome to Prime Meridian Day!

A prime meridian is a meridian (a line of longitude) in a geographical coordinate system at which longitude is defined to be 0°. Together, a prime meridian and its antimeridian (the 180thmeridian in a 360°-system) form a great circle. This great circle divides the sphere, e.g., the Earth, into two hemispheres.

The lessons of Allen Griffin, Syracuse’s newest assistant coach D); Fortier)

The professor strode into Syracuse’s practice unannounced, and Allen Griffin knew he was in trouble.

It was fall 1997 and Griffin, a freshman from Brownsville, Brooklyn, watched Marlene Blumin approach Bernie Fine, whom she knew as a former classmate and Griffin knew as his head coach’s lieutenant. Griffin remembered Fine looking around until he saw Griffin looking back at him. Fine extended a pointer finger and beckoned. Come here now.

Griffin trudged over, and, once he was within reach, Fine put his hand on the back of Griffin’s head. In that moment, Griffin regretted not paying the proper respect to Blumin’s warning: Turn in your homework or I’ll come get it. Fine glared at Griffin as the point guard stammered through an explanation. In his next College Learning Strategies class, Griffin handed in his assignment.

Syracuse basketball vs. Southern New Hampshire: 10 things to watch in exhibition (PS; Waters)

Jim Boeheim will open his 42nd season as the head coach of the Syracuse Orange on Wednesday night with an exhibition game against Division II Southern New Hampshire University of the Northeast 10 conference. This is the first of two exhibitions for Syracuse prior to the Orange's regular season opener on Friday, Nov. 10, against Cornell.

Syracuse is coming off a 19-15 season and returns just one starting player.

The game will start at 7 p.m. and be televised by ACC Network Extra.

Syracuse's starting lineup

Tyus Battle, a sophomore guard, is Syracuse's only returning starter, so it will be interesting to see who Boeheim decides to start on Wednesday.

Frank Howard (pictured) started 14 games as a sophomore last year. He figures to start at the point against Southern New Hampshire.

In the frontcourt, it's likely that Boeheim will go with redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer and freshman Oshae Brissett.

Syracuse basketball an afterthought in preseason )auburnpub.com; AP)

Jim Boeheim finds himself in an uncustomary place — his Syracuse Orange are an afterthought as the season opener nears.

It's understandable. Syracuse is facing a major rebuild after a lackluster season.

The Orange lost their best player when forward Tyler Lydon left for the NBA after two seasons and there is just one returning starter along with one redshirt freshman and four freshmen on the roster.

Although Boeheim also lost his top assistant — Mike Hopkins left in March to become head coach at Washington after more than two decades under his mentor — it's simply business as usual as he prepares for season No. 42 at his alma mater.

"It's the same every year. You want to have a great team," Boeheim said. "You want to get this team to be as good as they can be."

The Orange were erratic in going 19-15 last season, the most losses in a season in Boeheim's Hall of Fame career, and ended the year with a loss to Ole Miss in the second round of the NIT.

Syracuse Basketball Meets New Season with Questions & Higher Expectations (waer.org; Ruderman)

Syracuse men’s basketball goes into the upcoming season with games starting this week…and one thing is on everyone’s minds: How will Syracuse fare this year following their disappointing 2016-2017 season. The Orange went from the Final Four in 2016 as the number 10 seed, to not even making it past the second round in the NIT tournament last year.

In the last few years, inconsistency seems to be the recurring theme for the Orange, and once again Coach Jim Boeheim and the Orange will head into this season with something to prove.

With nine returning players this season and half of the team being underclassman, Syracuse is faced with a disadvantage in lack of experience.

Two of the team’s presumed top players this season, Tyus Battle and Matthew Moyer, are both returning sophomores. Moyer did not play last season but still considers himself a veteran on the team and leader on the floor. It surprised a lot of people when Moyer decided to redshirt his freshman year. But he stands by the choice, saying that the experience humbled and prepared him for this upcoming season.
