BATTLE TESTED: All eyes are on Tyus Battle this season as he tries to develop into the alpha that Syracuse needs (DO; Fortier)

In the opening moments of Syracuse’s first exhibition game this season, against Division II Southern New Hampshire, Tyus Battle heard from himself the same things others had been telling him for years. The Orange trailed by five and, in its last five possessions, had missed one shot and turned the ball over four times. Looking around, the playmakers Battle had depended on last year were gone. At 20, he was the leader of a program usually reliant on its veterans.

Practically since he learned to dribble, those close to Battle wanted him to be more “selfish.” Battle prefers the word “aggressive.” Either way, he heard it last season as a freshman at Syracuse and for years before. He heard it from coaches and teammates. He heard it in youth hoops and high school and playing internationally for USA Basketball. He heard it from his dad.

LAST STOP: Geno Thorpe brings experience to Syracuse in final year of college basketball (DO; Gutirrez)

This summer, Geno Thorpe strolled into The Scoring Factory, a gym on Pittsburgh’s South Side, wearing a cutoff V-neck, light shorts and flip-flops, ready to work out in preparation for the biggest stage of his career. In a few months, Thorpe would debut for Syracuse, his fifth team since his freshman year of high school, expected to do what he’s always done — bring size and stability to the point guard position.

But, on a warm summer day, Thorpe meandered in a mostly empty gym in beachwear. Henry Pwono, a professional playing overseas, whom Thorpe trains with, laughed.

“So laid-back,” Pwono said. “He’s always been the coolest kid on Sesame Street. He could have walked from the gym onto a beach.”

AT THE CORE: Frank Howard has put last season’s disappointment behind him as he gets ready to lead Syracuse DO; Langer)

A lot is new for Syracuse this season. Six of the 10 scholarship players for the Orange are in their first year at the school. Many of the practices are highlighted by four freshmen and one graduate transfer spending extra time with assistant coaches, asking questions as they learn the system.

But as Frank Howard trotted out from the locker room at the start of practice the day before SU’s first exhibition game against Southern New Hampshire, he seemed comfortable. He shared a laugh with center Paschal Chukwu as the two stretched together. He jokingly chided assistant coach Adrian Autry every time Autry missed a 3-pointer while shooting around. He broke down the team huddle with a “hard work” chant to start practice.

The offseason evolved Howard from a disappointing prospect to a comfortable veteran leader. A year ago, he was expected to emerge as the Orange’s starting point guard after showing flashes as a freshman. Instead, he lost most of his playing time once Atlantic Coast Conference play began, dealing with an injury to his core muscles as he watched graduate transfer John Gillon develop a stronghold on the position.

Howard Washington attended 3 different high schools to end up at the only college he wanted (DO; Langer)

Editor’s note: In late October, freshman forward Oshae Brissett told The Daily Orange: “Our freshmen, people don’t know how good we are.” Granted, no one knows just how good the four freshmen are yet, but in a four-part series this week, The D.O. tells you who they are.

Howard Washington’s family was in Orangeville, Ontario, ready to watch him play. It was March 11, which was also the birthday of Howard Washington Sr., Washington’s father.

The Washingtons are from Buffalo, just a few hours west of Syracuse. Father and son both grew up Syracuse basketball fans.

After the game, one of Washington’s coaches, Tony McIntyre, called the family into his office. There, they got a phone call from SU assistant coach Adrian Autry. Tears streamed down Washington’s face as Autry said Syracuse was offering him a scholarship.

Syracuse basketball vs. Southern Connecticut State: 10 things to watch in exhibition (PS; Waters)

The game is the second of Syracuse's two exhibition contests prior to the Orange's regular season opener against Cornell on Friday, Nov. 10. Syracuse beat Southern New Hampshire 84-54 in its first exhibition last Wednesday.

Syracuse Basketball Player Preview: Geno Thorpe – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Edelstein)

Geno Thorpe is new to the Syracuse basketball program. But, despite the youth this team has compared to last year’s, Thorpe is not one of the freshmen.

A Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, Thorpe is a graduate transfer to SU from South Florida. Whereas last year’s Orange was stacked with graduate students in Andrew White III, John Gillon and DaJuan Coleman, Thorpe stands alone as the only graduate student-athlete on the team.

Thorpe is the Orange’s new scoring weapon. The 6-foot-3-inch tall guard was South Florida’s leading scorer last season. He averaged 15.1 points per game.

Thorpe is a skilled three point shooter—a scorer Syracuse greatly needs after losing White III to graduation at the end of last season. Thorpe hit 37.5 percent of his threes last year. He is also a good shooter in general, scoring on nearly 40 percent of his shots.

Saudi prince who serves on Maxwell board arrested on charges related to corruption (DO; Rose)

Alwaleed bin Talal, a Saudi Arabian prince who serves as a member of the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs’ advisory board, was arrested on Saturday on charges related to corruption.

A few hours after Saudi King Salman established a new anti-corruption committee, Alwaleed and more than 10 other princes, four ministers and tens of former ministers were arrested, The New York Times reported.

Alwaleed is an honorary member of Maxwell’s advisory board and, in 1985, graduated from SU with a master’s degree in social science.

He is the 45th richest person in the world, valued at $17 billion, according to Forbes. Salman’s anti-corruption committee has the right to freeze his assets and ban him from traveling, per The New York Times. Previously, Alwaleed pledged to donate $32 billion to “intercultural understanding” charity work, the Associated Press reported.

Syracuse University’s relationship with SUNY-ESF, explained (DO; Catalfamo)

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry is the nation’s oldest college dedicated to the study of the natural environment. It is also a partner institution with its close neighbor, Syracuse University.

The partnership, which began when SUNY-ESF was established in 1911, has created many opportunities for intersection between the two schools. Students from SU or SUNY-ESF can use facilities, take classes and participate in extracurricular activities at the opposite institution. The schools also hold a joint undergraduate commencement ceremony in the Carrier Dome, and SUNY-ESF graduates receive diplomas with seals from both their home college and SU.

SU has about 14,600 full-time undergraduate students, more than 4,500 full-time graduate and law school students and approximately 2,200 part-time graduate and law school students. Smaller than its sister school, SUNY-ESF enrolls about 1,700 undergraduates and 600 graduate students at its Syracuse campus and regional campuses throughout central New York and the Adirondacks.
