Welcome to Asascattalo Day!

Named after Alaska's mythical mascot, a genetic cross between a moose and a walrus, this is a day to celebrate the unique humor enjoyed by the residents of the northern-most state.

College basketball: Chukwu’s power game paces Syracuse over Oakland at Dome (watertowndailytimes.com; Manganiello)

Paschal Chukwu’s breakout game as a member of the Syracuse Orange propelled the home team in a 74-50 win over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Monday night at the Carrier Dome.

The 7-foot-2 center made the most of his career-high 31 minutes. Chukwu made all six of his shots for 12 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked eight shots while affecting many more. Syracuse (4-0) was led in scoring by Tyus Battle, who scored 15 of his 25 in the first half, and received 18 points and six assists from Frank Howard.

Chukwu constricted Oakland (2-2), which shot 30.5 percent from the field. Oakland got back within 10 points early in the second half, but Syracuse, which made 15 blocks and 12 steals as a team, clamped down and pulled away.

“It’s just such a difference,” Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said. “They would have had four or five layups in the second half while we were struggling offensively. The game would have been four or two (points), instead of 12.

“(Chukwu) just changed the whole game,” he continued. “He got some offensive things tonight. We looked for him a little better.”

Syracuse's defense overpowers Oakland 74-50 (madison.com; AP; Frank)

The Syracuse defense didn't rest on Monday, led by its big man who came up huge.

Paschal Chukwu, the Orange's 7-2 junior center, had the best game of his career with 12 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots to lead Syracuse to a 74-50 win over Oakland.

"Because his defense was so good inside, he (Chukwu) just changed the whole game," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "He got some offensive things tonight and we looked for him a little better."

ACC Roundup - Heels Have Issues (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

What to make of UNC’s win over Stanford?

Well first we’d guess Roy Williams is a bit uneasy about not having Cameron Johnson.

UNC got 29 points out of Joel Berry and 20 out of Kenny Williams, but the Tar Heels have been an inside-out team forever. Luke May hit six shots but two were three pointers. Theo Pinson, who’s 6-5, hit 4-8. Six-foot-nine Garrison Brooks picked up four fouls and basically whiffed.

Take away Berry and Williams and UNC shot 20-43, not horrible but not much inside offense either, at least not much you can plan around.

Johnson would at least provide an experienced forward who can shoot or drive.

Matt Farrell had a career night for the Irish, scoring 27 points to lead Notre Dame past Chaminade.

Examining the ACC’s graduation success rates - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Powell)

The ACC boasts some of America’s premier academic instutions. So it’s no surprise that the league claims some of the nation’s top graduation success rates (GSRs), as recently released by the NCAA.

According to the NCAA’s website, the student-athlete graduation success rate is calculated based on the proportion of first-year, full-time student-athletes who entered a school on athletics aid and graduated from that institution within six years. The recent numbers are based on student-athletes who enrolled at ACC member schools between 2007 and 2010. Giving them a full six years to graduate, these are students who should have graduated between 2013 and 2016.

The graduation success rate takes into account student-athletes who transfer in good academic standing to other schools. This is why college administrators prefer the GSR over the federal rate, which treats transfers as academic failures. The federal rates across intercollegiate athletics are much lower than the graduation success rate.

The ACC stands as the nation’s top Power 5 program in graduation success rates for the three major revenue men’s sports of baseball, basketball, and football.

In all, 30 of 43 ACC teams in those three sports reached graduation success rates above the national average. The ACC ranks first in the Power 5 in both baseball and basketball, while tying for first in football.

Syracuse native Post Malone is No. 1 for 6th week, announces album release date (PS; Herbert)

Syracuse-born rapper Post Malone is on top of the charts for the sixth straight week.

Billboard reports Malone's "Rockstar" feat. 21 Savage is No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated Dec. 2, ahead of Camila Cabello's "Havana" and Lil Pump's "Gucci Gang." Malone also topped the Streaming Songs chart for the seventh straight week with 49.2 million streams, according to Nielsen Music, and rose from No. 10 to No. 5 on the Radio Songs chart.

Malone is building on his success by announcing the release date for his sophomore album, just in time for the holidays. "Beerbongs and Bentleys," featuring "Rockstar," will be available Dec. 1.

Malone told Billboard in September that the new album will be "more eclectic" than his platinum-selling debut album, "Stoney," which featured popular singles "White Iverson," "Congratulations" and "Deja Vu" (feat. Justin Bieber). According to the music publication, featured artists on "B&B" include John Mayer, Tommy Lee and rappers Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign.

The 22-year-old singer-rapper's real name is Austin Post; he was born in Syracuse in 1995 and lived in Central New York until he was 10, when his family moved to Dallas. He credits his father, who worked as a DJ in Syracuse, for introducing him to a wide variety of music.
