Welcome to National Package Protection Day!

National Package Protection Day is the Wednesday after Thanksgiving. It encourages homeowners to stay alert and protect their homes against package theft, which becomes more and more prevalent during the holidays. This year’s Package Protection Day falls on November 29, 2017, so be on the lookout!

The internet has made it easier to find deals and have packages shipped straight to our homes. But this has also made it easier for thieves to snatch our deliveries right from our doorsteps. Cyber Monday, in particular, is a big online shopping day where most purchases are shipped directly to the buyer’s home.

3-point shots: Observations and opinions from Maryland's loss at Syracuse (baltimoresun.com; Markus)

A year ago, the Maryland men’s basketball team got off to a school-record 20-2 start largely on its ability to close out games, win its share of nonconference matchups played in neutral settings and win road games early in the Big Ten season.

After losing two-point games to St. Bonaventure in the opening round of the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Fla., on Friday and to Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Monday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Terps are 6-2 going into the start of league play Friday at home against Purdue.

The two losses — including in Maryland’s first true road game — means coach Mark Turgeon’s team will have to build its NCAA tournament resume almost entirely in the Big Ten, which the Terps did their first two years in the league.

Syracuse’s new big men are rocking the 2-3 zone – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Dickinson)

Last season, the pitfall of Syracuse basketball was it’s defense. Okay… a lot of things weren’t great about that team, but defense was one of them. The Orange allowed over 71 points per game last season, which was about average in the NCAA but terrible for Syracuse standards. SU hadn’t allowed that many points per game since 2009, and it caused the Orange to miss its second NCAA Tournament in three years. The 2-3 zone wasn’t as scary as it had been in previous years; SU was without a true, functional center and frequently had to rely on Tyler Lydon and Tyler Roberson to play the middle of the zone. This year wasn’t supposed to be any better after the Orange’s best big men and top five rebounders (Lydon, Roberson, Taurean Thompson, Dajuan Coleman and Andrew White III) all either graduated, left for the NBA or transferred. Nobody knew what to expect from the Orange’s new cast, and most predicted it would be another down year for the Orange. That still may turn out to be the case, but through six games the new big men in Boeheim’s zone have revived Syracuse’s defense. Oh, and the Orange is still undefeated.

Darryl Morsell helped Maryland basketball crack Syracuse’s zone (dbknews.com; Melnick)

Guard Darryl Morsell has played on the high post against zone defenses since he was a child, so he felt ready when coach Mark Turgeon asked him to fill that role in Maryland men's basketball's 72-70 loss to Syracuse on Monday.

The Terps searched for the best player to place on the high post after struggling against St. Bonaventure's 1-3-1 zone last Friday. While guard Kevin Huerter started in that position against the Orange's historically strong 2-3 zone, Morsell was more effective there, recording nine points and five assists. His ability to distribute from the top of the key freed up Huerter to knock down seven 3-pointers.

Despite Maryland's loss, Morsell's performance is a promising sign the Terps can solve their issues against zones during Big Ten play.

"I'm an unselfish player," Morsell said. "When I catch it on the high post I look for my shooters on the wing."

ACC-Big Ten Challenge 2017: Bracket, schedule, scores, and more (sbnation.com; Stephens)

The 19th annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge is upon us, with 14 teams from each conference playing one another in a series of games over four days, beginning Monday night with Syracuse hosting Maryland.

Three of the meetings in this challenge were rated among the top 16 non-conference games of the year by our Mike Rutherford, headlined by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at the Michigan State Spartans on Thursday at No. 4. Other challenge games rated highly include Miami at Minnesota on Wednesday (No. 10) and Louisville at Purdue on Tuesday (No. 16).

The top non-conference game of the year was a game already played between teams in these two conferences, with Grayson Allen scoring 37 points to lead the Duke Blue Devils over Michigan State, 88-81, on Nov. 14 in the Champions Classic.
