Welcome to Saint Nicholas Day!

December 6th is the feast day of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, which appropriately falls during the Advent season. This feast day is an especially exciting one for children as they count down the days on their Advent calendars in anticipation of Christmas day.

St. Nicholas of Myra is a major saint in many European and Eastern countries, and one of the old Christian traditions surrounding his feast day is for kids to leave their shoes out overnight in front of the fireplace, on the windowsill, or outside their bedroom door so that St. Nicholas can fill them with special fruits, candies, and other small gifts and treats.

Syracuse Too Much For UConn; Huskies Fall, 72-63 (Courant.com; Amore)

All that goes with playing at Madison Square Garden has usually worked to UConn’s advantage.

The glare of the lights and magnitude of the stage were never intimidating factors. Maybe the Huskies weren’t shellshocked Tuesday night, but they were overmatched by the size, strength and skill of their opponent. That, no venue could equalize.

And in this episode of the long-running rivalry, Syracuse stayed in control and defeated UConn 72-63 in the Jimmy V Classic before 17,532 at Madison Square Garden.

“We knew what we were getting into,” said Jalen Adams, who led the Huskies with 22 points. “We knew our matchups. We knew they had large length. I think we got too excited … we got too reckless with the ball.”

Breaking Down UConn-Syracuse At MSG (Courant.com; Anthony)

UConn and Syracuse got together for the 94th time Tuesday night, the 16th time at Madison Square Garden. To be certain, there have been many more pulsating and aesthetically pleasing games in this old rivalry than what became a 72-63 Syracuse victory before the usual split crowd.

The Huskies were tough, played hard. They weren’t very good, though, and Syracuse was only marginally better, opening an early double-digit lead that it seemed intent on coughing up down the stretch.

UConn wouldn’t cooperate, though, failing late to capitalize on opportunities — down seven, after trailing by as many as 17 — just like it failed to hold onto the ball early (13 first-half turnovers).

ACC Roundup - Notre Dame Woes Continue (Duke basketball report.com; King)

Notre Dame lost a shocker to Ball State as Tayler Persons rose up and hit a magnificent three with time running out to pull off the upset 80-77.

Well everyone seems surprised except Notre Dame. Coach and players alike say they’re not playing very well.

Bonzie Colson called it a “reality check.”

Matt Farrell said that "[w]e haven't been very good since we've been back. We really haven't. We've got some work to do here before we go and play again.”

County legislators OK plan for $1.5M bike trail on polluted land near Onondaga Lake (PS; Mulder)

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Onondaga County Legislature today approved a plan to spend $1.5 million building a bike trail extension on a polluted piece of land known as Murphy's Island on the south shore of Onondaga Lake.

Several members of the Onondaga Audubon Society said the project could harm bald eagles that roost in the area. Michelle Stantial, a doctoral student at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, said foot traffic along the proposed trail could disturb the birds.
