Welcome to National Buffet Day!

National Buffet Day is observed annually on January 2. Buffets are a popular choice for many when choosing a destination for eating out.

Buffets are a system of serving meals, where food is placed in a public area to be easily viewed and selected, by people serving themselves. Buffets are useful for feeding large groups of individuals at one time and are offered at a variety of places including hotels, restaurants and conventions.

Originating during the middle of the 16th century, the buffet table comes from the Brannvinsbord – Swedish schnapps (shot of alcoholic beverage) table. The prime of this custom was during the early 18th century and was developed into the more modern buffet around the beginning of the 19th century. It was during the expansion of the railroads throughout Europe that the smorgasbord buffet increased in popularity.

Syracuse basketball’s New Year’s resolutions – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Dickinson)

The 2017 portion of Syracuse basketball’s season ended about as well as Orange fans could have hoped. SU is at 12-2 with losses to only Kansas and a very talented St. Bonaventure team. The Orange has already picked up its first ACC win, and is in a much better position to start 2018 than when it started 2017. Syracuse is going into the new year with Top 25 votes, but the meat of its schedule is still ahead and as tough as any in the country. There’s still plenty for the Orange to improve on if it wants to compete in the ACC, and coming through on these New Year’s resolutions could get SU back to where its fans want it to be.

Stop turning the ball over

*Stares at Frank Howard*

At least through the non-conference schedule, this has easily been the best season of Frank Howard’s collegiate career. He is blowing away his previous bests in points, assists and steals per game, and in the ACC opener tied the 14 starts he had all of last season. He has solidified himself as SU’s point guard for the season, but he still needs to do better.

Syracuse Basketball: The student has not quite passed the master just yet (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse basketball coach Jim Boeheim may be closer to the end of his career than the beginning. But an old dog still knows some trick, ITLH breaks it down.

While the big news of the offseason was the future of the Syracuse basketball program. It seems early on that the decision has worked out for both teams.

The Washington Huskies led by former long-time Syracuse Assistant Mike Hopkins is 11-4 and sits at in the fifth hole in the Pac-12.

While Jim Boeheim and company are 12-2 and sit atop of the best conference in college basketball, the ACC. In the lead-up to conference play, we spoke with Chris Coleman of Tech Sidelines dot com to preview Syracuse vs Virginia Tech.

In that conversation Coleman brought up that the Hokies had already played this 2-3 zone when they played the Huskies earlier this season led by Mike Hopkins.

.@ChrisColemanTSL of @TechSideline joined @BoyGreen25 to break down Sunday's ACC contest with @Cuse_MBB and @HokiesMBB right here on @TheScore1260!audioBoom / Chris Coleman Interview

In that contest, the Hokies dominated winning by 24 points and made it rain from downtown. The Hokies shot nearly 80% from beyond the arc and dismantled the patented 2-3 zone. Coleman felt confident that was a serious case of foreshadowing for what was to come against the Orange.

Syracuse Basketball: Oshae Brissett is the best Canadian in College Basketball (itlh.com; Weisleder)

Through 14 games, Syracuse basketball freshman, Oshae Brissett, has already cemented himself as the best Canadian player in the NCAA. ITLH breaks it down.

For good reason, most Canadian-bred hoopers that find themselves NCAA bound end up in the ACC, or in other words, the best conference in college basketball.

Heading into the 2017-18 season, most expected very little from a Syracuse basketball team that failed to make the 2017 NCAA Tournament, lost Taurean Thompson, and was about to deploy five unexperienced freshmen on a nightly basis.

Syracuse Basketball: Belated reaction to the Orange’s huge win over the Hokies (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Happy new year Syracuse basketball fans! The Orange opened up conference play with a huge win over the Hokies. ITLH breaks it all down.

Only two of our Inside the Loud House staff correctly predicted that the Syracuse basketball team would take out the Virginia Tech Hokies.

After taking the night to enjoy the Orange victory, it’s time to look back at the thrilling win. We all thought that future NBA star Tyus Battle would lead this team on a night in and night out basis. But really the torch has been taken by the Canadian Sensation Oshae Brissett as of late.

On Sunday night Brissett paced the Orange in scoring with 19 points and continued his phenomenal stroke from the charity stripe (9-of-10). That is the DNA of this team: attack the rim, get to the line, and convert.

Ben Walsh takes oath of office to become Syracuse mayor (DO; Ogozalek)

Ben Walsh took the oath of office Sunday afternoon at a private inauguration ceremony at City Hall surrounded by friends and family as he was sworn in, preparing to become the 54th mayor of Syracuse.

Walsh, 38, stood in the Common Council chambers as members of his new administration looked on. Martha Walsh Hood, an acting Supreme Court Justice and Walsh’s aunt, administered the oath of office with a Bible that was presented to his grandfather as a gift from a local laborers union. City Court Judge Derrek Thomas swore in the mayor.

Greg Loh, the new director of city initiatives, said Walsh will not be officially considered mayor until midnight. But Walsh is ready to get started immediately.

“I don’t plan on taking time off … like anything else I’m going to dive in head first,” Walsh said in a press conference after the event. The new mayor wiped tears off his face as his father, former congressman Jim Walsh, praised his son’s campaign before the ceremony.

I'm at Syracuse City Hall this afternoon for Ben Walsh's private inauguration ceremony. I'll pass along any interesting updates. @dailyorange pic.twitter.com/Mx8tVBOay5
