Welcome to Barbie Day!

The history of Barbie Day is the history of Barbie herself as the day marks her official birthday. Barbie debuted on March 9, 1959 at the American International Toy Fair in New York. She was a labor of love from Ruth Handler who was the wife of the co-founder of the toy giant Mattel, Inc. After watching children playing with baby dolls and paper dolls, she thought that the toy market needed something more.

After a trip to Germany where she saw a doll that was in line with what she wanted, she convinced her husband and the company to make the first ever mass produced doll with adult features. While there have been small changes through the years, Barbie came off the production line much like we know her today. There were some who objected to her figure, but as you can see with her success, those thoughts were in the minority.

Do you know the background story for Barbie? Her parents, George and Margaret Roberts, named her Barbara Millicent Roberts. Her nickname is the famous Barbie. What about Ken you ask? His mother, Edna Carson, named him after her father, Kenneth. After a time, Barbie gets a host of siblings, cousins and friends! To learn more, you can head over to your handy search engine and find all the details. It is very interesting to see which dolls are no longer produced and who is newest to the group!

Bubble Watch: Alabama, Providence score big wins; bid stealer lurks in Pac-12 (PS; Ditota)

We're winding down, Syracuse basketball fans. Only three more days of worry and speculation separate the Orange from its postseason fate.

Syracuse, with its (for now) RPI of 44, its 6-11 record in Quadrant 1 and Quadrant 2 games, and its non-conference strength of schedule at 21 can only wait until Selection Sunday to see whether it goes to the NCAA Tournament or the NIT.

(Virginia, for comparison sake, is 9-1 in Quadrant 1 opportunities alone.)

It's busy here on the bubble. So many games, so many possibilities. And let's face it: With the new criteria for selecting at-large teams to the field, nobody really knows what to expect. But all and all, with the exceptions of Alabama and Providence, it was a decent day for Syracuse.

Big Dance or not, I’m so proud of Syracuse Basketball (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad got crushed by North Carolina, but it doesn’t change one iota how I feel about this team.
And now, we wait.

The SU hoops outfit couldn’t keep up with No. 12 North Carolina on Wednesday night in the ACC Tournament’s second round at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Despite these two programs playing a four-point game at the Carrier Dome last month, the Orange just fell flat this go-round versus the Tar Heels, which carved up the 2-3 zone like a turkey on Thanksgiving.

Let’s give credit where credit is due. UNC, the No. 6 seed in the ACC tourney, is simply a better, deeper group. I imagine that the Tar Heels will likely go on a formidable run in this tournament, and they should have a terrific seed line in March Madness.

For the ‘Cuse, the No. 11 seed in the ACC Tournament, it’s going to prove a few long days until Selection Sunday.

Latest projections for NCAA tournament bubble teams (si.com; Beller)

Conference tournaments began last week, but Championship Week has arrived. In a few short days, we’ll know all 68 teams in the field and what each one will have to do to cut down the nets in San Antonio. Until then, we’ll be keeping track of the changes to the projected field daily in the Bubble Watch.

THURSDAY'S BIGGEST BUBBLE GAMES
ACC quarterfinals: Notre Dame vs. No. 5 Duke, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

Alright, Irish. You’ve got yourselves to a point where you could be playing a play-in game. The Irish needed to get to this point to have a realistic shot at an at-large bid. Given the strength of this year’s bubble—and the issues with their case created largely by Bonzie Colson’s injury—they still need one more win. Beat Duke, which is on the shortlist of national title contenders, and the Irish will prove they belong in the dance.

Not every SU fan pulling for an NCAA berth (spectrum.com; video)

Syracuse University basketball fans have another anxious wait ahead of them.

With Selection Sunday still days away, no one knows whether the Orange will be in or out of the NCAA Tournament.

SU struggled against North Carolina Wednesday night, losing to the Tar Heels 78-59 in the second round of action in the ACC Tournament.

Syracuse is now 20 and 13 on the season. According to most analysts, they are right on the fringe of making the cut for the NCAA tournament, but as Gabrielle Mediak found out -- not every SU fan is pulling for an NCAA berth.

UNC vs Syracuse: 3 Things Learned (tarheelblog.com; Lawrence)

Author’s Note: Before we begin, I ask everyone to read this tribute to Woody Durham by our own Evan Daniels. Everyone has their story — mine is listening to him with my father when we visited my grandmother during Christmas because she did not have cable — but in reading yesterday’s memorials, this was one of the best I read. I don’t know why. You may disagree. I don’t care. Read it.

Ok. Now we may begin.

It’s official. In two seasons, Jim Boeheim has only mustered one ACC Tournamentvictory, despite it being held in Syracuse’s proverbial back yard of New York City. UNC took care of business last night in a 78-59 victory, earning their nation leading 12th “quadrant 1” victory. It put an end to a brief two game losing streak, and was their 7th consecutive win over the ‘Cuse. They will take on Miami in tonight’s quarterfinals.

What else did we learn?

Is that...defense?
Midway through the first half, Tar Heel Blog contributor Jay Exum asked a very important question regarding UNC’s play.

Tracking haddock's route, from ocean to the plates of Upstate New Yorkers (PS; Pucci)

Fishermen set off in their trawlers from the Boston Harbor at dawn in search of haddock and cod.

After catching their fill, the fishers rush back to the harbor to sell their haul. The fish, barely hours out of the water, are quickly trucked away to shops and restaurants across the Northeast, including to Upstate New York, where it serves as the centerpiece of the ever-popular Lenten fish fry.

Except that's not how it happens. At all.

Haddock takes a long, winding journey to make it to your plate in Central New York and experts say it's a journey that's showing no signs of slowing down.

Rich Nolan has run the seafood department at Green Hills Farm supermarket in Nedrow since 2009. The supermarket serves fried haddock dinners every Friday. On a typical Friday, the store sells about 350 pounds of haddock--skin-on, as is traditional in Central New York. During Lent, that number doubles to between 600 and 700 pounds.

First look at new high-end apartments in Syracuse's State Tower Building (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

A nearly $40 million project to turn the upper floors of the 21-story State Tower Building, the tallest in Syracuse, into high-end apartments is complete.

All of the building's 61 apartments are ready for occupancy, and 23 of them are already leased, said Andrew Gearhart, marketing and leasing representative for Pioneer Cos., the building's owner.

The building was built in 1927 as an office high-rise at 109 S. Warren St.

In recent years, much of its office space went vacant. Seeing an opportunity, Pioneer bought the building from a group led by developer Tony Fiorito for $5.4 million in 2016.

Pioneer immediately made plans to relocate the building's remaining office tenants to the lower part of the building and turn the upper floors into apartments.

Conversion of vacant office space into apartments has been a major trend in downtown Syracuse in the past few years, with strong demand for downtown housing among young professionals and empty nesters.
