Welcome to National Doughnut Day!
National Doughnut Day started in 1938[1] as a fund raiser for Chicago's The Salvation Army. Their goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression, and to honor The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.
Soon after the US entrance into World War I in 1917, The Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that the needs of US enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service. Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys. These huts were established by The Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers.
About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting The Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day: "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett are bound for 2019 NBA Draft’s first-round (itlh.com; Weisleder)
Syracuse Basketball’s dynamic duo of Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett will be undisputed first-round picks in the 2019 NBA Draft.
This past April, when Syracuse’s sophomore sensation, Tyus Battle, declared for the NBA Draft without hiring an agent, many were confident that the 20-year-old was a lock to return to Central New York for his third season under Jim Boeheim.
One month later, it appeared as if Battle was a lock to keep his name in the Draft.
Wednesday night marked the final time a player who had entered the draft without an agent’s opportunity to either keep their name in and commit to going pro, or withdraw their name, and go back to college.
Six hours before Battle had to make his decision, reports came out claiming that the prolific scorer from Edison, NJ was returning to Syracuse for his Junior season.

Syracuse basketball recruiting target Joe Girard plans to trim school list next month (PS; Ditota)
Joe Girard III has, he believes, 25 college basketball scholarship offers. And while the attention from those schools affirms all the work he's put in on the court, the situational strategies heighten as a decision draws closer.
Girard, the guard from Glens Falls who became New York State's all-time leading scorer during his junior year, counts Duke, Michigan and Syracuse among his suitors. This week, he heads to Colorado Springs to try out for USA Basketball's 18U team. Afterward, he hopes to trim his list to a more manageable number.
"Whether I make the team or not, whenever I come back I'm trying to narrow it down to a few schools after that. I'm going from like 25 down to single digits, a handful maybe," Girard said last weekend in Hampton, Va., where his Albany City Rocks team played in the final EYBL session before Peach Jam. "Not to get it out of the way, but I've got too many and I kind of just want to focus on the teams where I can fit in and that need me."
Girard underlined a very real dilemma for players attempting to puzzle out the possibilities of their college choices. High school players want to make informed decisions about their college futures. They want to visit schools, meet team members. But they also face a sort of Rubik's Cube combination of other players those same schools are recruiting.
One twist could alter the entire recruiting puzzle. One decision can impact another player's destination.
"I have fun with (recruiting) but there are parts of it that are stressful. Let's say there's your top school and you don't want to lose it because somebody else commits before you. There's a lot of things you have to think about. I don't know if it's stressful or if it's just being smart," Girard said.

ACC Success
Assuming Rothstein’s report is accurate, the ACC will host six of the 14 games next season. In 2017, this event didn’t go so well for the Big Ten, which was swarmed by the ACC. (11-3 final record)
Overall, this is an event that the ACC has sort of dominated over the years. The 2018 challenge with be the 20th in the rivalry’s arc; the two conferences started the matchup back in 1999. The ACC has a 12-5-2 record in the event.
At the bottom
As is customary with the 15-to-14 team ratio, one ACC program will not participate. Next season, that will go to Wake Forest, per Rothstein.
Wake Forest is the lone ACC team that will not be a part of the 2018 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, per a source.

Syracuse assessor to council: I'll yank tax break if mixed-use buildings abuse it (PS; Knauss)
Syracuse's assessment commissioner told city councilors Wednesday that he is reviewing the status of all 40 city properties that receive a lucrative tax break for mixed-use buildings, and he will revoke the exemption for any properties that no longer qualify.
Common councilors quizzed Commissioner of Assessment David Clifford about the tax breaks in response to a syracuse.com reportthat some building owners get the 12-year tax exemption despite having only token commercial operations.
In the case of one apartment complex, Copper Beech Commons, the only visible commercial activity is a trio of vending machines. The property saves more than $500,000 a year with the 485-a property tax exemption.
Clifford told councilors his staff will review the apartment complex and other properties where there is no obvious commercial use.
"We're going to be asking to inspect that property as well as a number of others where we don't see commercial activity,'' Clifford said. "We're going to give them an opportunity to correct that by the end of the year. If we find at the end of the year that they haven't got any commercial use in there, we're going to take the exemption off. They'll be fully taxable.''
