Orange Watch: Syracuse basketball list of 2018-19 opponents down to one - The Juice Online (The Juice; Bierman)

Item: With only one date left to be filled (as of Aug. 6) to complete the 13 games making up the pre-ACC portion of the SU schedule, there is one certainty; the framework of the out-of-conference competition level combined with the 18 league game rotation previously announced, including Duke twice, will certainly have this seasoned team prepared to make another deep NCAA Tournament run.

All that’s left to announce are the specific dates of the ACC regular season games, and the naming of one more non-conference opponent and the 31 games making up the 2018-19 schedule will be complete, likely either just before or just after Labor Day.

The final non-ACC foe would complete the desired 10 home games to help derive the needed revenue from ticket sales in the large building, that overall has 21 basketball dates this season between October and March.

The non-conference schedule is currently highlighted by appearances from Georgetown (Dec. 8), a rematch from a year ago with St. Bonaventure (Dec.29), and a potential Boeheim (Jimmy) vs. Boeheim (Buddy) matchup (Dec. 1) with the almost annual visit of Cornell.

There’s presently an open date that could be filled on Sat., Nov. 24 when the football team is at Boston College, and only two games are now scheduled between Buffalo (Dec. 18) and the Bonnies rematch with the Holiday break sandwiched in the middle.

'Hardly home but always reppin'': NBA's Chris Paul gives $2.5M to Wake Forest basketball (greensboro.com; O'Neill)

Chris Paul’s opening statement Tuesday morning for his foundation’s golf tournament fundraiser included the former West Forsyth and Wake Forest star saying, “this is home for me. It’s always been home and always will be.”

After the announcement he pledged to give Wake Forest’s basketball program $2.5 million, his exclusive time with the Journal ended with him quoting a Drake line.

“I think Drake said it best in a verse; he said, ‘Hardly home but always reppin’,’” Paul said.

Wake Forest announced Tuesday morning that Paul is donating the money to the school’s basketball program. It will be used to transform the men’s and women’s basketball clubhouses next to the Shah Basketball Complex, which is still under construction and expected to be finished in 2019. The men’s basketball locker room will be called the Chris Paul Locker Room.

The enhancements will be seen with expanded locker rooms, nutrition resources and treatment areas.

UNC Basketball: A look into the current recruiting landscape for Roy Williams (tarheelblog.com; Anderson)

When it comes to the recent history of UNC basketball recruiting, it is safe to say that Roy Williams has brought a mixed bag of talent to campus since Harrison Barnes committed back in 2010. That is, however, only if you focus on high school player rankings and nothing else — UNC has managed to make it to two Final Fours, two national championship games, won the national title in 2017, and has won multiple ACC regular season and tournament titles. Rankings be damned, Roy Williams has been able to get things done despite the multiple outliers that have worked against his favor.

Fast forward to 2018 when Roy Williams has likely finished sending out offers to recruits for the 2019 class and has quite a bit of work left to do with offers for the 2020 class. This two-year period will be the most telling of what Roy Williams is actually able to do with not only all of his cards in the deck, but perhaps a couple of new cards as well. Coming off of a huge commitment from current player and projected top-5 NBA Draft pick Nassir Little, the Heels have all of the momentum on the recruiting trail that they could ask for.

Let’s take a look some of the changes that have taken place recently and how these changes very well could turn the tide for UNC going forward.

BC Basketball and Jim Christian Deserve Our Cautious Optimism (247sports.com; Micik)

Watching Boston College men's basketball is fun again. The win yield is not exactly that of the mid-2000s with Jared Dudley and Craig Smith, but the spark of life is back.

Both the players and the coaching staff, including head coach Jim Christian, deserve credit.

Across the board, the 2017-18 Boston College Eagles are an improved team, also putting aside statistical considerations. They are doing a better job of keeping up with the pace of the Atlantic Coast Conference, a league that has previously chewed them up and spit them out. Their 3-4 conference record does not tell the full story, one of a squad that beat Duke and Florida State while pushing Virginia to the brink and coming up just short after furious comebacks against Clemson and Louisville. Pushovers no more, the Eagles are starting to find a place among the mid-tier NCAA Tournament contenders in the ACC.

As for those statistical considerations, which do form a part of the tale, several numbers matter also.

13: Boston College's wins through January 23. This ties their overall win total from Jim Christian's first season four years ago, with at least 12 games remaining.

4: The number of contests the Eagles must win to be assured their first winning season since 2010-11. There are at least four winnable games out there for Boston College. Sometimes, you must walk (winning season) before you can run (NCAA Tournament), but the Eagles are fortunate that the latter remains possible.

2 and 0: Respectively, BC's RPI Top 50 wins and losses outside the RPI Top 100 through January 23. Last season, those numbers were 0 and 5. In fact, the 2016-17 Eagles had two abominable losses outside the RPI Top 250: Nicholls State and Hartford.

18.2: Jerome Robinson's points per game. He is fourth in the ACC, with teammate Ky Bowman close behind in seventh (16.4).

Kings of The Court: How Duke Basketball Has Continued To Excel On Social Media (frntofficesport.com; Londergan)

There are few brands, if any, in all of college athletics more recognizable than the Duke Basketball program. That’s certainly in part due to the five national championships, 12 Final Four appearances, and 14 ACC Championships since 1986 under head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Over the better part of the last decade, however, the basketball program’s digital team has added significant equity to the Duke brand with their efforts on social media.

In the past year alone, the @DukeMBB Twitter handle has seen its impressions almost double from 17.6 million to over 34.1 million. Just prior to this, Duke’s athletic communications department made the decision to simplify their social media approach by merging their recruiting/fan engagement voice known as Duke Blue Planet (DBP) with the voice of their sports information accounts. As a result, @DukeMBB is the most followed team Twitter account in all of college sports with 2.24 million followers. Deputy director of athletics/operations, Mike Cragg, the former SID and 31-year veteran of the athletics department, explains the process of merging those two different presences into one.

“I think the merger into one entity helped immensely. It is a better strategy for having just one with better collective thinking and better content. We had great stuff, but I think working together, we now have got a pretty robust team.”

“We are seeing that benefit in the numbers – but more importantly with a unified message and delivery. We’ve always tried to stay ahead of the curve in a lot of different ways such as being the first school to ever have a .com website. Now our social media approach is the latest and gives us an even more direct voice to our fans around the world.”

Cragg goes on to explain the added benefits of merging DBP with a more traditional voice.

“We had a lot of meetings asking ourselves – ‘what is the core question’. And that core question was ‘how do we best represent our basketball program and our athletic department and university – together. So knocking down some of those walls if you will and combining the age of video with the age of the written word, I think were the biggest challenges. Having one voice – across different social media platforms – allowed everybody to contribute to our social media world. It came with some growing pains, as expected, but I think that it was definitely the right step to take and it definitely paid off.”

Syracuse Chiefs' Ballpark Craft Beer Fest adds power to its lineup for 2018 (PS; Cazentre)

Fresh off its first year running its new "Craft Beer Corner," the home of Syracuse Chiefs baseball will aim to boost the power of its beer selection at its annual post-season brew fest.

The Ballpark Craft Beer Festival takes place 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at NBT Bank Stadium on Syracuse's North Side. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door.

Syracuse Chiefs tap into craft beer at NBT Bank Stadium

Beers from noted brewers like Evil Twin, Lord Hobo and Mikkeller now available at the Now & Later Craft Corner.

The fest will feature more than 100 beers from more than 50 craft breweries. Guests receive a commemorative tasting glass and a chance to take batting practice on the field. Batting practice is $10 for 10 pitches.

For this year's fest, the Chiefs are teaming up with the Now & Later Bottle Shop and Tap Room, which is also its partner in the Craft Corner on the first base side of the concourse. That space has kicked up the selection of draft and packaged beer available during games, including some previously hard-to-find craft beers from noted breweries in New York City, New England and elsewhere.

Now & Later owner Jason Purdy is helping recruit breweries for the fest, as he does for the Craft Corner. (Purdy also runs the annual CNY Brewfest at the state fairgrounds each winter).

I hope that last date gets filled with a quality opponent. At this point I do not feel our non conference schedule is that strong given out expectations for this year. Just my opinion.
