Welcome to National Relaxation Day!

National Relaxation Day is observed annually on August 15th. It is time to slow down, unwind and relax!

National Relaxation Day is an important day as we all need a break from the fast-paced and often hectic lifestyles we live. Taking time to recuperate and rejuvenate our tired minds and bodies may help prevent many health risks. Like the founder of this day suggested, too much work can make us sick, run down, tired and that’s just wrong.

But he was right! It has been proven that stress can be harmful to our health, both mentally and physically. Most doctors will agree that finding ways to relax and finding ways to reduce stress will improve overall health.

30 Minutes in Orange Nation | WTLA-AM (espnsyracuse.com; radio; Seth & Steve)

Posted on August 14, 2018 by cuseproducers •

Steve and Seth open the show talking about the Yankees and if all hope is lost winning the division and if the Yankees should just start focusing on hosting the wild card game. They then talk about Today’s Business, specifically, Darius Bazley possibly not going to the G-League now.

Syracuse Basketball: Darius Bazley may skip G-League in 2018 (itlh.com; Weisleder)

NBA scouts are speculating that former Syracuse Basketball recruit Darius Bazley may actually not play in the G-League next season.

Ex-Syracuse basketball recruit, Darius Bazley, may once again shock the hoops world and hurt his 2019 NBA Draft stock in the process.

Bazley, a five-star recruit that was initially headed to play for Jim Boeheim five months ago, gave Orange fans across the country a rude awakening on back on March 30. That was when the dominant forward from Princeton High School decided to de-commit from Syracuse and make the jump straight to the G-League instead.

This past weekend, Bazley joined more than 60 high-end college and high school prospects at the Nike Academy, an upper-echelon training program that features many talented unsigned competitors, and the 6-foot-9 forward once again made major headlines.

Five months after the stockpile of dissentious messages from Orange fans had finally begun to subside, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, who was in attendance at the program in Los Angeles, claimed that NBA scouts across the country believe Bazley may actually skip G-League play entirely, and instead spend the upcoming season training privately.

ACC power rankings and offseason questions (si.com; Geary)

Now that August has set in and we’re just three months away from the start of college basketball’s regular season, it’s time to check in on each of the six major conferences (ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC). Every team in the country has questions at this point of the summer, some more pressing than others. So in addition to power ranking each league, we’ll be asking some burning questions about the conference, whether they’re related to specific teams and players or the league as a whole. First up, it’s the ACC.

ACC SUMMER POWER RANKINGS

1. Duke: Another undoubtedly loaded recruiting class, including three top-five recruits, has the undoubtedly young (see below) Blue Devils on top.

2. Virginia: The Hoos bring back three starters from a team that lost only three games last year, even if that final defeat came at the worst possible time.

3. UNC: Nassir Little is big time. The McDonald’s All-American Game MVP should take some pressure off Luke Maye.

4. Virginia Tech: With four double-digit scorers returning, this could be Buzz Williams’s best team yet in Blacksburg.

5. Florida State: After a surprising Elite Eight run, the Seminoles bring back a solid chunk of their core.

6. Syracuse: After the Orange squeaked into the NCAA tournament and made an unexpected run—sound familiar?—they return all five starters.

ESPN slots Pitt basketball last in ACC preseason rankings (cardiachill.com; Whaley)

On Tuesday, ESPN.com released its burning questions for the ACC basketball season on Tuesday. Over to the right, they also added their preseason ACC basketball power rankings. I don’t know if those were recently released or if they’d been out for a while but, to date, I don’t recall seeing them.

While the Panthers may now be headed in the right direction under new head coach Jeff Capel, big things aren’t yet expected of the team. The site’s preseason conference power rankings have the Panthers in last place.

I don’t know that the Panthers will again be last in the conference as they were last season. But after going winless in ACC play, Pitt not only finished last in 2017-18 but were four games behind the next to last team, Wake Forest, who managed four conference victories. Given that, as well as the team’s youth, it’s completely understandable why not much is expected of the program for next season.

NYS Fair demo kitchen: New farm-to-table emphasis (PS; Weaver)

Victor Ramirez plans to share a kitchen secret at the 2018 New York State Fair.
The owner and chef at Madison Bistro says he's going to teach people what to do with carrot tops during one of his talks at the Wegmans Demonstration Kitchen.
"People turn them away all the time," he said. At Madison Bistro, he laughed, "we're turning trash into cash."

Ramirez is one of several new area chefs and farmers who are joining the kitchen demo lineup this year.

Mark Pawliw, the founder of Farm to Fork 101, is behind the change. With Farm to Fork, Pawliw connects area farmers and chefs with diners, hosting monthly meals that encourage people to learn more about who is growing food and what to do with it in the kitchen.

Pawliw says he aims to bring that same connection to the demo kitchen. The state fair hired him this year as the superintendent charged with coordinating the cooking demonstrations.
